The title is fairly self-explanatory I understand that some sunscreens are less effective when used with mineral makeup. Something to do with coated -v- uncoated zinc IIRC.
Can anyone tell me please if any of the facial sunscreens from this range will be okay when used with MM?
ETA: I've been using La Roche Posay for oily skin but find it still leaves my skin VERY shiny, so I'm looking around for a matte alternative. If anyone has any suggestions I'd be glad to hear them. The Neutrogena one crossed my radar and I've read rave reviews about how matte it is, hence this post. |

That's the combo I use and it seems to work well! |

Thanks Glad it works for you, but after spending a lot of time reading various threads here on EDS, I did a little investigating and it turns out that this sunscreen contains avobenzone, and that's the ingredient that can be problematic when used with MMU. It sounds as though it hasn't been a problem for you but since my current avobenzone sunscreen doesn't appear to be working with my MMU, I think I should look for an avobenzone-free alternative.
I've decided to try L'Oreal UV Perfect SPF 50+++. It was recommended in another thread and it doesn't appear to contain avobenzone, but I'll check the ingredients list on the packaging when it arrives, just in case! |

All chemical sunscreens begin to break down as soon as they are exposed to sunlight. It's the chemical reaction with the sunlight that makes them work, but also makes them unstable.
The active ingredients such as avobenzone will also begin to degrade upon exposure to minerals such as zinc and titanium.
So yes, you are best not using those two products in conjunction with one another.
I use burnout sunscreen, which is extremely protective, but cosmetically elegant. And can be used under MM.
Any sunscreen containing minerals already, without avobenzone or other chemical sunscreen, should be safe.

Thank you for such an informative post Unfortunately so many of the sunscreens I see recommended here on EDS are a little tricky to get hold of in the UK. I've made a note of the ones you've mentioned and am keeping a list of options, just in case the ones I've managed to source in the UK don't work out.
Thank you again! |

Ubar,
I know that Avène makes a mineral sunscreen, but I've used it before and it makes your skin soooo white!
Can you find Badger sunscreens over there?
I think that brand is supposed to be good.
Here's a link to sunscreen recs, chemical and mineral, from the Telegraph. Looks like you have several good options if you scroll down, good luck!

More tips, thank you!
A couple of days ago I ordered L'Oreal UV Perfect SPF 50 Transparent Skin. I have high hopes of it. I used to use another L'Oreal one and loved it but they discontinued it. I think it was part of the Solar Expertise range. It was fab - never made me look shiny, kept my skin really well protected, it was perfect. Hope that this one will be a good substitute. If it's not, I now have lots of other options to explore! |

My L'Oreal UV Perfect arrived today. I bought the Transparent Skin version. It is heaven in a bottle. I've been using La Roche Posay Anthelios for about three years and have never really been happy with it. I didn't like the way it made my skin look. L'Oreal UV Perfect is utterly blissful.
It's a thicker consistency than the Anthelios, more like a cream whereas Anthelios is very runny, a liquid. With UV Perfect here is absolutely no trace of oiliness, even on my combination skin. It leaves my skin looking flawless. It's even easy to apply make-up afterwards! My skin feels like it can breathe, it doesn't feel clogged or masked.
It does smell a little like sunscreen (if you know what I mean) but to be honest I really couldn't care less; after all, it's only on my face so I'm not going to reek of sunscreen the way I would if I were applying it all over my body. I honestly don't think anyone else would notice the smell of this product.
This isn't the easiest product to get hold of, because it appears it's only really distributed in Asia. The packaging even says that it is "Tailor-made for Asian women's skin phototype", but if you have fair skin of any type I think you would love this product. I emailed L'Oreal UK today to ask why this is only distributed in Asia. I bought my bottle from Amazon.co.uk but it would be nice if it were a little easier to find. I told L'Oreal that I used to be a fan of their Solar Expertise SPF 50 sunscreen and was bitterly disappointed when it was discontinued. Now I've found UV Perfect I just pray they'll keep making it.
Thank you to LondonJamie who mentioned this product over on the Sunscreen Recommendations thread. |
