I was reading an interesting article in Scientific American, where someone asked

"Why do we get dark circles under the eyes"

The answer was this: The skin under the eye area is very thin to begin with, and underneath are layers of blue veins..as we age,the skin gets thinner and reveals more and more of these veins, making the undereye appear darker.

The darkness seems to be worst in fair skinned people.

While no cream wil help,as genetics are mostly responsible for this, there are new cosmetic treatments that will help alleviate the colour,as well as less invasive treatments to help rid the eye of noticble bags (which is mostly genetic as well)

Agreed, but I think they do ignore a number of factors in their explanation. I don't think dark circles are caused exclusively by the skin getting thinner and revealing more veins, although that may account for a large percentage of occurences. It doesn't explain why I get dark circles when I have a cold (and therefore have congested sinuses) or when I don't get enough sleep. They go away shortly after recovering.

I wonder if there's anything in a medical journal somewhere that explains this in terms of all possibilities. I should look that up....

Also, allergies can exacerbate dark circles.

I know that my husband's undereye circles become much more noticeable when he is tired, but his aren't really blue, they are more of a darker tan. Which would indicate that there is more than one cause for undereye circles.
