Hello everyone. A search on the topic of massage and collagen/wrinkles/crepeyness hasn't shown much in the way of definite results, here or on the web generally. I do FlexEffect exercises and have needled, but would certainly massage if there were real results out there. Where are the studies? Exactly what proof (apart from Deb Crowley's amazing skin) is there for spending time on this? By comparison, I can read Dr Fernandes' studies and use a needle and dermaroller, knowing that there is research proving that this will form collagen and elastin. Also, within a few weeks of single needling my perioral and forehead lines were completely gone - pretty convincing.

However, of course if the same results could be achieved with a massage, it would be more pleasant and safe.

So please: if you have definitely had results (good/bad/zero) from massage (or have come across some research in this field), could you please give us some details of technique, frequency and outcomes?

There is one paper I found dealing specifically with collagen formation through massage. This system won't let me post a link, but it's by Ross Turchaninov.

I gather it to mean that light massage won't do it: you need microdamage and inflammation (ie as in needling) to get the process going. So next question: should we massage infrequently, as in rolling, to give the tissue several weeks to re-build?

Hi Needl,
It all depends on what you mean by massage. There are various types,... for beauty of the skin on the face they usually recommend lymphatic massages -for eyebags, thick cheeks, etc; there are also massages that stimulate the muscles underneath if you hold a certain muscle position while doing the massage, and then more vigorous types than can stimulate the collagen production because they're kind of exfoliating the skin so stimulating it in a similar way as you mention needling, kind of harming it so it "cures" itself. And also some all in one massages that work skin and muscle at the same time. Just my opinion though.
I personally enjoy massages a lot and think they are very useful, if not key.
Not sure about your post if what you're wanting is research data about it.
I am curious about single needling, does it mean that if I use a needle and pinch the skin on a forehead wrinkle in various places along it, it could reconstruct itself and disappear?
I mean, using a needle in a DIY fashion rather than having to buy a special single needling product "made for face use".
Thanks.

Yes, I'm looking for real data: scientific studies on exactly how to massage for skin improvement, and people's real, definite gains. Regarding single needling, my data are simply that it worked for my lines as described. I can't recommend this to anyone else though. On some lines it hasn't removed them, so hard to gauge what progress there has been.

You'll find real source material for your data collection if you read this forum full of hands on peer reviews.

You'd think so, but I've searched 'massage' and don't come up with exact descriptions of methods and improvements. Also, since some of us are looking for a more scientific approach, it would be great to have exact data all in one thread.

So: if massage has really helped EDS members, it would be great if you list methods, frequency and outcomes for the rest of us Smile

Searching tanaka and no lipo lipo will give you the information on those techniques.

A general search term will give you vague results.

Good Luck with your research.
