This article discusses HA gels and various ways they are prepared to facilitate drug delivery, etc. It addresses some of the issues with fragmented HA... on page 3 that it says HA <100KDA are inflammatory, immuno-stimulatory and angiogenic. (It also makes me think there is a reason those Sqoom gels are so expensive)

This article is also very interesting...see the table on page 2 called "Effects of HA Size on Cellular Behavior and Physiology."

well, I cant say for sure about LMW HA being pro inflammatory or not but I do believe her until proven otherwsie...
anyways, I have used both, my skin felt more moisturized with HMW than with LMW, however I am not using any at the moment.
One benefit of using LMW HA is that it will not thicken your serums like the HMW HA would. |
Re: The molecular weight of Hyaluronic acid - is this something that is labelled? I don't know if I've ever thought or seen this on a product label.
Does anyone have a list - partial or otherwise of High vs Low HA products of certain companies. Thanks. |
Not sure what the molecular weight is but here are some that use fragmented hyaluronic acid:
• [A'kin] Purely Revitalising Lifting Eye Creme, Day Creme and Night Creme
• Kiehl’s Super Multi-Corrective Cream
• Lancôme Rénergie Éclat Multi-Lift
• Avène Eluage Gel (H.A.F. Exclusive Fragmented Hyaluronic Acid @ 1% — may be Intermediate sized hyaluronate fragments [HAFi]?)
• Avène Retrinal H.A.F. Firming Gel
• Avène Sérénage Nutri-Redensifying Vital Serum (1% Hyaluronic Acid Fragment)
• La Roche-Posay Redermic [C] Dry (0.1% Fragmented Hyaluronic Acid)
• Eucerin Hyaluron Filler-Day-Dry Skin
• L'Oréal Revitalift Laser X3 Serum, Moisturizer, Eye Cream |

Here's a serum that uses HAFi fragmented hyaluronic acid:
Lamelle Correctives Hydrating HA Serum
What's a HAFi fragment?
Intermediate Hyaluronic Acid fragment. (A very specific length HA segment or chain)
How are HAFi fragments made?
A large Hyaluronic acid molecule is cleaved (divided) into different fragment sizes using a sonifier (a high powered ultrasonic reactor), the resulting fragments are then separated into their respective sizes using an exclusion gel filtration column. This ensures that the resulting HAFi fragments are all within a specific molecular weight range.
What's the big deal about HAFi fragments?
Only HAFi fragments have all five very specific effects on skin;
1. they are able to penetrate into the epidermis and dermis,
2. they can attract and bind water into the epidermis and dermis,
3. they can stimulate keratinocytes and fibroblasts to produce additional Hyaluronic acid,
4. they increase keratinocyte and fibroblast proliferation (increase the number of cells),
5. they can assist in wound healing by encouraging the movement of new keratinocytes across the surface of an injury.

It looks as if some of the NovExpert creams and serums also use fragmented HA. |

Just wondering how the "fragmented HA" is working out for those using it? |
