Hi EDS community
I am on a mission to understand attitudes about the sun and why we have them.
So the sun effects the body biologically (vitamin D generation), the mind (perceptions of attractiveness vs ageing concerns), and emotionally (seasonal effective disorder).
Here are a few questions:
Do you find tanned or untanned skin attractive?
Do you like tanned skin but avoid the sun due to ageing concerns?
When you use makeup, do you go for a tanned look?
Do you feel happier when you are directly in the sun (not full-out sun bathing)
Do you avoid the sun but take vitamin supplements, or select a vitamin D rich diet.
There's a related discussion on natural sun-lightened hair, please check it out & take the poll:

I would have answered your poll on the hair but none of the above would have been my answer and it wasn't listed. I am never out in the sun for too long and when I am in the sun, I don't think about my hair at all. I have not noticed any effect of the sun on my hair, plus I wear hats a lot so maybe the sun doesn't get a chance to do anything to my hair. But even when I never wore hats and would be out in the sun much, I honestly have no idea if the sun made any difference to my hair. I doubt it. My hair is hair that many people who live in hot climates in Africa have so it seems it's custom-made for the sun to beat on it w/o changing it.
OK...now about this new thread. I know some of you may think black people don't "tan" but I remember as a teen, going on vacation with my family to hot climates and getting darker. We never used sunscreen at all. So we would all darken, which is essentially what happens when you tan. And with that out of the way, here are my answers:
Do you find tanned or untanned skin attractive?
TBH, I don't really care one way or another. Very pale Irish skin does give me pause but not in a disgusted way. It is just different and therefore interesting to look at. There was a time I wanted to be as dark as Alek Wek (yeah, I know the contrast makes her look darker but that is one of my favorite photos of her so...) but now I really don't care. I am partial to very dark skin as it usually looks flawless.
Do you like tanned skin but avoid the sun due to ageing concerns?
Not applicable because I don't like or dislike tanned skin. I really don't care.
When you use makeup, do you go for a tanned look?
Nope. I try to get as close a match to my own complexion as possible.
Do you feel happier when you are directly in the sun (not full-out sun bathing)?
Not really. I don't care one way or another. I don't get excited and run out to bask when the sun is out...but I also don't mind feeling the sun's rays on my skin early morning when walking outdoors. I do feel happier when it's balmy outside though, even if just seeing the beautiful weather from indoors. I hate dull days. I don't get depressed when there is no sun but I most certainly do not like to go outside when it's not sunny. I would rather be indoors sipping a hot drink and doing some indoor hobby.
Do you avoid the sun but take vitamin supplements, or select a vitamin D rich diet?
Yes. Now that I know the problems the sun can cause, I do avoid it, especially the midday scorching hot sun. I do take vitamin D3 and calcium religiously particularly because I do wear sunblock so even when in the sun, I don't make much D in my skin. I do try to vary my diet so I'm also getting as much good nutrition as possible. Otherwise, I've never really been a sun worshiper so this "sun avoidance" is not something I have to think about. It just happens and I only become aware of the fact that I actually do avoid the sun when I see topics about the sun and cancer like this one. |

I am one of those with very pale skin. Growing up in the 70s, when tan was popular, I was frequently snickered at for being pale and hearing comments like "don't you ever go out in the sun?". I would either burn or tan just a little. It was such a hassle that I stopped trying. As decent self tanners came out, I used them. I always wanted to be tan because I was sick of all the snarky comments.
Do you find tanned or untanned skin attractive?
--I prefer a light tan and find that more attractive than super pale or really dark.
Do you like tanned skin but avoid the sun due to ageing concerns?
--Yes, I avoid tanning now and am glad I never really got into it earlier. I never had much patience to "lay out".
When you use makeup, do you go for a tanned look?
--In summer I will use a fake tanner on arms and legs so I'm not glow-in-the-dark pale. I sometimes use a light bronzer on my face.
Do you feel happier when you are directly in the sun (not full-out sun bathing)?
--I like the feel of sun on my skin, especially in 70-80 degree weather. It does improve my mood. I'll allow a little sun in my legs but wear sunscreen elsewhere.
Do you avoid the sun but take vitamin supplements, or select a vitamin D rich diet.
--I try to get some natural vitamin D by getting 10-20 minutes of sun on my legs in nice weather, a couple times a week. I take vitamin D as well. |

Do you find tanned or untanned skin attractive?
I like naturally dark skin on others; but I am pale. I have accepted it.
Do you like tanned skin but avoid the sun due to ageing concerns?
I burn easy so I should be careful in the sun. I do believe that women who spend hours in the sun (natural or in a bed) usually have sun damage.
When you use makeup, do you go for a tanned look?
No. I do try to embrace my paleness. I usually wear peach or peachy/pink blush. No fake tan.
Do you feel happier when you are directly in the sun (not full-out sun bathing)
I live in Canada so I do prefer the warmth over this arctic cold.
Do you avoid the sun but take vitamin supplements, or select a vitamin D rich diet.
I think everyone should have their vitamin D levels checked if in doubt. |

Do you find tanned or untanned skin attractive?
It depends on the rest of the package. If someone has a super-dark fake tan that clashes with their hair/eyes, then I find that unattractive.
Do you like tanned skin but avoid the sun due to ageing concerns?
I attempted to tan one spring over Spring Break and it was not a good look, so no... not on me. I could never lay out just to tan as I got bored quickly. I do avoid the sun due to aging/cancer concerns but it's not a huge sacrifice to do so.
When you use makeup, do you go for a tanned look?
No. I am pale with blonde hair and green eyes; it would look weird. I do occasionally use a bronzer blush if I want to look summer-y, but it's not a full-face look.
Do you feel happier when you are directly in the sun (not full-out sun bathing)
Usually, yes. I enjoy the random rainy day but mostly want it to be sunny. I feel more energized when it is sunny.
Do you avoid the sun but take vitamin supplements, or select a vitamin D rich diet.

Do you find tanned or untanned skin attractive?
Untanned skin of any shade is attractive, as is lightly tanned skin. Attractiveness has more to do with the condition of the skin than its color.
Do you like tanned skin but avoid the sun due to ageing concerns?
Yes, I enjoy my natural paleness in winter/spring and like being lightly tanned in summer/fall, but my skin is easily sun damaged, so I use hats and high spf sunscreen + tanners, bronzer, etc.
When you use makeup, do you go for a tanned look?
Only in summer/fall, when I use bronze/copper/gold eyeshadows and coral lipstick & blush.
Do you feel happier when you are directly in the sun (not full-out sun bathing)
No, I live in a warm climate so I'm more accustomed to sheltering from direct sun.
Do you avoid the sun but take vitamin supplements, or select a vitamin D rich diet.
Since I live in a warm, sunny climate, I get plenty of sun anyway, but I try to avoid damage and do take vitamin supplements, including D for calcium absorption. |

Do you find tanned or untanned skin attractive?
I just to find it attractive but since I know all the future damage that tanned skin will endure I can't stand it now.
Do you like tanned skin but avoid the sun due to ageing concerns?
I just to worship the sun and spent long hours tanning before I knew about the dangers of tanning. Now when I'm on holidays I tan my body a bit using a high SPF but never my face or neck. Ageing skin is very much present on my mind every time I expose myself to the sun.
When you use makeup, do you go for a tanned look?
I like the bronzed look created with make up because I know is safe.
Do you feel happier when you are directly in the sun (not full-out sun bathing)
Yes, I do because the sun has its benefits too but I always take the recommended precautions when out in the sun: sunscreen and sunglasses are a must.
Do you avoid the sun but take vitamin supplements, or select a vitamin D rich diet.
I do take vitamin supplements but when I can I also like to expose myself to sunshine rays since is very good to boost the mood. But of course I take my precautions. |

Do you find tanned or untanned skin attractive?
When I was a teenager, I loved tan skin. Now, not so much, but I think that came as a result of learning about sun damage.
Do you like tanned skin but avoid the sun due to ageing concerns?
I initially liked tan skin, but have learned to embrace the paleness.
When you use makeup, do you go for a tanned look?
No, it looks like I've thrown mud on my face, not a good look.
Do you feel happier when you are directly in the sun (not full-out sun bathing)
I used to love the feeling of the sun; now I avoid it.
Do you avoid the sun but take vitamin supplements, or select a vitamin D rich diet.
Yes. |
