Hello, I'm new to this forum and I'm seeking some advice. It's funny, I looked down at my hands today and noticed that I have the hands of a 90 year old woman! My knuckles are deeply wrinkled, veiny (if that's even a word) and the bones are starting to show through! I'm a woman in her early 40s. I shouldn't have hands like this. It's really freaking me out! I put thick hand cream on every night before going to bed. I've also tried sugar and oil treatments. Neither of them do a thing. Does anyone know how to get rid of thee wrinkly knuckles (it's especially wrinkled more on my ring fingers, probably because I do wear rings on them.) I don't want any kind of plastic surgery or fillers. Something natural like massage? Thanks! |

Hello!
Fat loss is pretty much inevitable with age and arthritis can make the hands look knobby, but there are ways to keep the skin looking smooth anyway, like CFF's hand massage techniques:

Hi Fawnie, Thanks for the reply! I realize that I'm not getting any younger and I'llprobably eventually get arthritis. I just wanted to see if anyone had any luck with smoothing out the wrinkley knuckles. The massage looks good but it doesn't look like she's massaging her knuckles. I'll definitely give it a try tho. Thank you |

I would apply the same anti-aging skin care products that you use on your face. I always use sunscreen or even better gloves. |

I can recommend the use of those heated mitts when you use your hand cream. I use a *ton* of hand cream but on the days I use the mitts, the difference is striking. It really plumps up the skin. |

Where did you find your heated mitts? I have had my hands treated this way during a spa treatment and enjoyed it. I would like to buy a pair for home. |

Have fun, fawnie!
Ollie - if your hands feel at all stiff or swollen, that might lead to their looking not-so-great. My knuckles were much more pronounced after a year long bout of overuse and abuse, probably due to the swelling. I finally had to be stern with myself and stop being so macho about "working through" the pain, though the big motivation for that wasn't looks - it was the fact I couldn't grip a hairbrush or start the car or zip my pants.
I found that exercises for repetitive stress injuries worked great (along with absolutely not using that hand for anything heavier than turning a page for about 6 months). If you google "rsi hand exercises" you'll find a number of videos and illustrations.
Another thing to try is wear gloves anytime you're cleaning. I've got pairs of gloves stashed all over: garage, kitchen sink, dog's room, etc. That makes it easier to grab them when your hands will be in contact with something potentially harsh. I also bought some 'Ove Gloves this year after repeatedly bumping my hand on the oven rack. All that abuse adds up and makes for extra work for skin to look healthy, so prevention has been helpful for me. |

Thank you Ladies for all the advice! Stardustgirl, I don't have any pain or problems with my hands yet....Thank god! I'm still able to do all the things you mentioned. My hands just look really old for my age! You are right tho, about using gloves when cleaning. I don't do that and probably should! It's probably half the reason why they look the way they do! I'm going to start wearing them. It's hard to get into the habit when you haven't done it for so long! |

I have been using Retin-A and Vitamin C and doing needle rolling on my hands and I can see a nice improvement. Unfortunately, I have some issues with dermatitis so have to be careful not to flare it up by over doing it. |

Well aging hands are one of my passions now and have been over recent years after I noticed whilst my face didn’t look aged, my hands were giving it away so I went on a mission to read and learn everything I could and I’ve seen some major changes myself. I wish I had photographed them now but my mother (who is my biggest fan and worst critic) complimented me on them (and her question to me was “what hand cream are you using because your hands look better than ever” – because in her world it would have to be a cream right and nothing else!).
Massage for me (well I trained in massage before Flexing) is one of the biggies. If people do CFF or whatever – great but incorporating some form of it is amazing. There is also a school of Hand Reflexology that I’ve done a few intro courses whereby they divide sections of the hand to represent various organs and systems within the body which is fascinating. So sometimes by massaging your hands, you may also be giving your organs a toning treatment – isn’t that a nice thought!
Secondly with skincare and the hands, one of the areas I’ve noticed most people don’t do properly is exfoliation. Now I’ve always been (and probably always will be) a fan of skin brushing. To me I brush my whole body, including my hands, and my skin feels great afterwards and usually is very rosy (I’m of celtic background so have the fair skin that goes red easily) and not only that but I believe that once you exfoliate the skin is better primed for taking any topicals etc you want to use. If I weren’t a trainer, I would be using topicals now like Retin A or CPs for sure. I decided to give them all up after starting a study in the UK (again another one that had funding withdrawn halfway through) where the doctor challenged me about my results being more due to the CPs/Retin A rather than Facial Exercises. I then suddenly realised when talking with clients, one of the natural questions they would always ask me is what I am using on my skin, so I decided to take away all of that stuff so I could in essence focus on what diet, lifestyle and training provided over any topical and still to this date I don’t use any of that stuff I once did because it is such a frequently asked question I get. Maybe down the road that will change but for now I’m very happy with what my training and results are and see no need to change that as yet.
Now another thing that I think is crucial is keeping the fingers and joints flexible. I mentioned previously about handhealth (https://www.handhealth.com) somewhere where they have some wonderful dvd’s containing exercises you learn to do and practice, and its great for increasing the finger movement and flexibility (and also looks pretty too) but T-tapp also has a hand/foot dvd that’s awesome, and there are many out there. Like most things, I’m a fan of exercise and so include my hands (and feet) in that approach too and you know I’m convinced its had a helping hand to prevent unnecessary aging. |

Seany- I saw your tag line that you retired from EDS... So nice to see you back again!! OMG, you are so spot on with regards to massage and it's importance in facial rejuvenation as well as reflexology. I am now mainly using microcurrent, but still do a few faves from Facercise. But, most recently have incorporated facial massage and pinching. A couple of weekends ago, I had a reflexology facial which I thought was better than any facial I've ever had before!!! In fact, it was so awesome and my face was toned and glowed afterwards!!! I am very intrigued by Reflexology and will ask my esty about the hands!! Oh yes the hands that suffer from the passage of time. Thank you so much for posting the link to the hand health site... running to check it out.... Again, glad to see you back - you were always such a great contributor!!! All the best, Aprile |

Hey Aprile
I had retired for sure, and am not sure how long I will be back but for now its working. Part of the reason was that I ended up spending a lot more time on EDS than I did on our FE general forum, and it was all training questions so didn’t really make sense to continue doing that here.
With the hands, its amazing to me because I had feet reflexology done several times and didn’t notice anything major but when I had my hands done, I could feel my stomach and other organs gurgling and being stimulated and felt amazing afterwards. The meridans also stem up into and around the skull and face too so often times when you work (whether exercises, massage or plain old simple touch) you will stimulate the body too.
