I'm just wondering whether it is ever possible to *fix* the skin type you have been lumbered with? For example, if you have oily skin and you manage to get it under control with e.g. Decleor Ylang Ylang and Hydra-Matte, then does that mean you have normal skin or is it still oily skin?

I think I already know the answer but just wanted to check... at the moment my combination skin is behaving itself and I am in danger of wanting to buy things aimed at normal skin. I need to still look for combination skin products though right?

Before I have oily-combination, but after i use Yonka and Decleor my skin is not oily anymore..
but still have some breakouts.. so should i called my skin normal?. Think

Hope someone out there can answer this question Laughing

This is a great question! I tend to think I still have the skin type that I was programed to have. For me that is oily skin and even if I get the oil under control, there is the "pore" issue and sometimes the "blackhead" issue and as a dear dermatologist once so gently put it, "joani, you are going to die with acne", which I think meant that you can keep it under control, but you still have it. Kind of like having asthma or any other condition. Under control with the right products, but still there.

This is s good question!! hmm
My skin is 'normal' at the moment but I suspect it would go back to being combination eventually, if I stopped using my currect skincare. Saying that I now use the same skincare lines but the 'normal to dry' version instead of the combination/oily that I used to use so I guess you could say I'm fixed!! Laughing
I certainly think you can change the way your skin behaves with appropriate skincare, diet, lifestyle etc and it definitely changes as you age (having seen lots of clients in my previous 'life' as a Beauty Therapist skin tends to become drier and less oily as we age.)

I don't think you can permanently change you predisposition to a skin type (ie use the correct products then stop and expect your skin to be 'fixed')but you can certainly change it to a great extent as long as you carr on doing whatever your doing! (does that make sense??)
Confused Very Happy

Think Lucia, yes, that does make sense, kinda Confused Laughing So, how about if you wanted to switch skincare lines? Would you be walking down the normal/dry aisle or would you be picking up the combo/oily products? Confused hmm

I actually wonder what is the normal line for...
since oily products help with excess oil
dry skin products help moisturize so the skin won't dry...

how about normal????
just to keep it normal maybe?

hmm

It is a pity that it isn't actually skincare products that dictate the true nature of your skin. It's the age, enviromental factors, stress, hormones, overall health ( Eg, a thyroid condition may cause "dry skin" but this is not the underlying natural state of the skin).

If you stop using all our lovely routines and just wash your skin clean .... it won't be too many weeks ( or days even!) before you regain a grasp of what your own skin type really is!! Shock

So... it's great when we can use products that seem to be able to CONTROL our undesired symptoms, but you have to appreciate that it is whilst you are using them, it's because you are using them! Stop and you will revert back.

So... if you are say, happy that you seem normal rather than oily combination whilst using one brand ( good results!) and want to change brands... go ahead... but don't be lulled into thinking your biological skin type has actually changed!
You'll need to remain using a range that tackles oily issues to maintain that percieved normality. If you go and buy a range that is for dry skin... ( unless you suddenly have a health issue causing it... or have dry, chapped areas to tackle immediately) then you will find your skin will start feeling oily again before too long. A drier skin range is not designed to keep oil under control if you know what I mean?

Normal ranges are just for maintaining a younger ( but not necessarily ) skin type that isnt plagued with any excesses that need controlling, either in terms of heavy moisturisation for dryness, anti-aging specialist ingredients ... or oil/bacteria control. They should be fairly neutral and not change the current oily vs dry status of your skin too much.

I think that diet can to an extent change our skin type.

But if your skin is "behaving" then there was a site that recommended the following test to check your skin type.

Cleanse face and pat dry. Do not apply ANYTHING. Wait 20 minutes (or maybe it was 30.. I dont think it was any more than that) and see how your skin is.. is it starting to look oily? Feeling taught and dry? Perfectly happy? Mixture?

My nose had started to gloss a bit when I did the test, but the rest was just fine.

the only thing that has happened to me that changed my skin type is the weather. I used to have super oily skin, now ever since I live in CO, my skin starts normalizing, even has a tendency to be dry in the winter.

It does change with age. My super oily skin is now more in the oily/normal range. I only say normal because once in a while, in the winter, I need some moisturizer.

Bet if you stop your successful routine, your skin would show its oilness again. The products you are using are successful...but your skin is still oily.

My skin has gone from oily to combo in about a year of using an oily skin care regime. Is it because I'm older or because of my regime? Hard to say...but it did change!

I have managed to get my skin from very oily to practically normal from using a simple regime of;
Homemade Dr H Cleansing Cream, Witch Hazel Toner and Jojoba Oil.
Also diet and vitamin supplements have helped too.

Interesting question. Certainly with age my skin's gotten drier and the various aha's and acne medications etc used along the way have probably contributed to it becoming sensitive. I wonder if I stopped everything other than the most basic routine for at least a year whether it would revert back?

I believe your skin will react to the products you are using at the time. I don't think your skin type actually changes other than through the normal changes that occur with age and change in hormones.
