You'd figure with the username I'd at least pretend to be knowledgeable. I'll pass on that.
I've picked up a new serum recently, Olay Regenerist Advanced Anti-Aging Regenerating Serum, fragrance-free. Seems to have a lot of benefits for daily use, & is lightweight for those w/ oily skin (*raises hand*).
Couldn't help but notice, though, skimming the ingredients list.. they use dmdm hydantoin as a preservative. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this ingredient, it is a formaldehyde releaser. Formaldehyde?! WHY IS THAT IN MY SKINCARE PRODUCTS.. that crap goes into frogs for dissection and humans for funerals.. pretty alarming, to me. Formaldehyde's a known carcinogen.
My other cleansers/shampoos/etc are fortunately free of this product.
I haven't tried the Olay serum, yet.
It sounded so promising, too.
I've found limited information regarding dmdm hydantoin's safety. Has anyone here read anything about it? What are your thoughts? What's your comfort level in using products with this additive?
All feedback is appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
- Jinx. |

Its a preservative used to prolong the shelf life of products. Since many other preservatives are often used along with it, I dont see the need for it. Olay is made in huge vats and stored in warehouses then on drugstore shelves for years so it needs to be preserved to the hilt. Olay doesnt care what happens on your skin - they just want it to get into your cart.
There are plenty of non-harmful preservatives to use but they are more expensive. The smaller niche companies use them in small amounts and make products as you order them, seek these companies out if you are interested in products that dont have these iffy ingredients. |
