Hi all,
Everywhere on the internet it states that retin a causes sun sensitivity, except on the oprah website which i can not post a link yet. Search on google for ''oprah retin a'' and hit the first link.
I am a male with a beard which I like to keep, so I have not found a sunscreen that I can wear on top of my beard daily ( maybe someone has a suggestion?) which is not noticable. I thought of mixing retin a with something like water and applying it on top of my beard so it can sink in. I don't go outside much. Is it ok to do this? Or will it cause sun sensitivity and it damages my skin more that benefits?
Thank you! |

Why not just use a great vitamin C serum instead? It boosts sun protection if used in the AM and helps rebuild collagen if used at night. I personally try to use it twice daily.
I'd suggest one of the Vivier serums sold here on EDS. Start with the Serum 5 or the Serum 10 and use it only once/daily at the beginning. If you're younger and not experiencing wrinkling yet, then using it just in the AM would be a good strategy. It should absorb nicely through your beard. HTH! |

Makes no difference when you use your C serum. Once absorbed it stays in the skin for around 72 hours. Can't be washed off. Twice a day is overkill with no added benefits. |

If you choose to only use it every 3 days, that's your choice. I would perhaps agree that twice/daily may be too much for many skintypes. But there's a fall-off rate over the 3-4 day period. The skin certainly does not stay saturated for 72 hours after just one application.
Please pubmed study linked below, esp. the part:
"From a clinical point of view, it is important to note that the efficacy of the Vit. C serum is proportional to the concentration, but only up to 20%.[3] The half-life in the skin after achieving maximum concentration is 4 days. A persistent reservoir of Vit. C is important for adequate photoprotection, and can be achieved by regular 8-hourly applications."
I can't link directly since I've just started posting but see the following and pop in periods into the first three spaces, if you care to read the full study.

I apply mine every other nite. I've never heard of anyone applying it every 8 hours. Not that that would even be practical with sunscreen/make-up usage. |

Would alternating a vit C serum with Retin A be a good way to go? Looking for a way to increase application of Retin A without getting redder and flakier. I'd hate to work at cross purposes. |

Yes many people, including myself, alternate these two. |
