Hi everyone,
Have lurked this forum for awhile, now going more direct. I turned 30 this year and despite regularly being assumed 3 - 6 years younger and being carded on the regular, I feel I have entered an annoying pre-aging limbo, aka I find myself looking like a tired, sad, hungover teenager. I still have youthful features - big eyes, full lips, strong jawline, high cheekbones, usually ‘bright’ skin, but there’s some sort of gradual slump occurring — it’s like my malar cheek pads have ever so slightly started their downward shift and it’s affecting me in small but painful ways, with my genetically disposed faint nasolabial folds and tear troughs becoming a tad more pronounced. In good, frontal or natural lighting, the hollows are totally filled out and I glow and look like a kid. In the wrong lighting, I go totally shadowy, and feel like I look like a different, less attractive and much older person. (Cue that Seinfeld episode!)
I started noticing this stuff at 28, when a faint laugh line on the left side of my mouth seemingly went from occasional playful crinkle to a permanent light etching. I suddenly connected it to the increasing hollowness/crease by my nose on the same side, did the math, and flipped out, soon buying all kinds of new products to fight this change — the first time I’d ever noticed my face evolve against me. (Cue Vitamin C serums, argan oil, light retinols, the works, as well as the existential angst.) The good news is I don’t think it’s changed much in two years, but I’m not sure it’s that much better, either. My boyfriend says I look more youthful now than when he met me at age 27, but who knows. I do notice that when my skin is well hydrated, all the flaws are far less visible. I do know that I have dehydrated/“sensitized” skin, possibly from too many actives from two years ago and hot water, so I’ve switched to gentler products, which helps. However, it’s not a reliable thing — some days I drink a ton of water and barely notice the benefits, other days I forget to hydrate much at all, and my skin will look great. I’ve had products work wonders then become useless after two weeks. Like I said: it’s a limbo.
I’m 5’4” and 100 lbs and a clean-eating pescatarian, so I understand that my low body weight, which is natural, may be a culprit in this new gauntness. My father is also very thin, but I look like my mother, who in her late 50s looks about 39, which I hope bodes well for me. I don’t see myself going out of my way to gain weight, but when I go up even 2 lbs, my face definitely benefits from it. So I understand that natural(?) volume is key. I’ve tried some facial exercises and liked them at first, but quickly overbuilt my cheeks, corrugator and perioral area, taking on a hungry, masculine and militant look. (Think Angelina on a bad day).
I’m willing to try a different approach to exercise, I’m willing to try fillers, I’m willing to try a perfectly formulated cocktail of serums and oils and miracle potions. I’ll try Rx Retinol but am concerned it will make my dehydration issues worse. I don’t want to commit a huge amount of time to research and development here, because I’m a busy girl releasing new music this year and need to keep my priorities straight and my days creative and efficient. I just want to look good for photos and appearances, and I’m well aware that once you’re on the wrong side of 25 in this business, people are ready to inspect you for signs of decay. I also don’t want to resort to becoming the type who cannot be photographed candidly or from many angles, especially as an artist. I’d rather troubleshoot the issues and be free to express myself. So, what should I be exploring as a reliable avenue for these (admittedly vain) problems?
TL/DR:
Issues to target: dehydrated-leaning skin, occasional open pores on forehead, early nasolabial folds and tear troughs (genetic/present since teen years but deepening since age 27). “The aging youthful face.”
Current skincare regimen:
Morning: wash with either just cold water or CeraVe Moisturizing Wash (for rebuilding skin barrier), then apply Clinique Laser Focus Repair Serum or Ole Henriksen Vit. C Serum, then Clinique Dramatically Different Lotion, followed by CeraVe AM SPF 30 Lotion. If I don’t use the Vit C serum, I’ll use Ole Henriken’s Vit C + E oil over my moisturizer to seal it in. I also sometimes use Origins Plantscriptions Serum. On a less wonderful skin day, I’ll notice open pores/dehydration pore lines on my forehead, but usually Smashbox Primer disguises it well.
Evening: remove makeup with either grape seed oil or makeup remover, CeraVe moisturizing wash, then either the Clinique or Origins serum I mentioned before, then Neutrogena Deep Moisure Night Cream, sealed in with Origins Plantscriptions Youth-Renewing Face Oil. Sometimes I’ll use Peter Thomas Roth’s Volufill Neuroliquid serum in my ‘shadow spots’ at night, too, and either Say Yes To Blueberries Eye Cream or Estee Lauder’s Night Repair eye cream.
Once a week (not all at once):
- I use a dermaroller before serums, only at night.
- I’ll use Origins Drink Up Moisture Overnight Mask, usually after the dermaroller.
- Ole Henriken’s Lemon Flash AHA Peel, which serves as my primary exfoliation. (Occasionally, I use Dermalogica’s microfoliant in the shower if my skin starts looking drab/in need of shedding, but I’ve learned to steer clear of manual exfoliants.) I’ll moisturize extra well afterwards.
Diet:
Pescatarian, mainly vegetarian. Mainly greens, whole grains, smoothies, healthy fats, lean fish, low dairy. I have a glass of wine or cocktail most nights - it goes with my current entertainment lifestyle, I’m afraid.
Vitamins:
A general women’s multivitamin
Fish Oil 1400mg
A green supplement
MSM
B12
Any ideas? |

Sounds like you have established a good routine. The only thing that stood out for me is the Clinique products. I know we are all very different but, I'm afraid, Clinique dried my skin out like nothing else before! In fact, the Dramatic Mosture Lotion gave me small, dry bumps all over my face. At the time, Clinique was the only new addition to my routine, so I know that was the culprit. Needles to say, once I stopped using it, my skin recovered and the bumps and dryness disappeared. Not wanting to waste the product, I used it as a hand cream. |

Your age concerns are right on schedule: Skin wrinkling morphology changes suddenly in the early 30s.
I worry about your microneedling and then immediately applying chemicals during a period when your normal defenses are impaired. Most serums contain problem making chemicals. |

I believe that is rather high to be doing weekly! The skin's repair cycle is 1-1.5 months so it would not be taking full advantage of collagen repair. The constant inflammation could potentially be damaging. Just a thought! |

Ditch Clinique and Origins... many higher quality products out there. |

I'm very open to that. I get a discount with Estee brands, so I stock up, lol. Any suggestions? |

Thanks, maybe I'll space it out more. I haven't done it in two weeks, since I've been busy and my skin is fairly calm right now (minus a hormonal breakout). |

I can certainly recommend brands that work for me. The great thing about EDS is that I have learned about a lot of smaller companies who have high quality product. Many "high end" brands are just a bunch of silicone and fragrance. I personally like to support smaller business and like ingredient lists I can understand and have a good concentration of the right actives. I use nothing from a department store or drug store - all online brands.
Some of my favorites are:
NCN- Vitamin A, Copper Peptides
Glorybe Herbals - Hydrosols, aromatherapy
Grateful Body - tonic, moisturizer
My Fawnie - Omega Repair
Garden of Wisdom - various
Rainwater Botanicals - various
MUAC: Lactic acid
Shea Terra Organics: Rhassoul clay
Hope that helps... again this is what works for me after alot of trial and error. |
