Hi All,
I'd love some advice from other Obagi NuDerm users. I am 36 years old and I've been using the system for 5 1/2 months (the one for oily skin along with .05 retin A) to treat some hyperpigmentation and overall anti-aging. I have oily, very clog-prone skin and previously used BHA daily and retin-A micro for years, and still had lots of clogged pores and dull, uneven skin. I don't get many cystic breakouts, just a couple a month. Anyway I am very pleased with results from the NuDerm system in terms of more even skin tone. I have great elasticity and no wrinkles, and my skin looks younger and a lot less dull. BUT I am still dealing with clogged pores. I get monthly facials to extract them, but they come right back. I tried to incorporate BHA a couple times a week instead of Exforderm forte, but my skin got dry and duller looking. I don't think BHA is the answer because I previously used it for years with no better result in terms of clogging than not using it. My derm says to just stick with the Obagi system. THe only thing I switched for summer was using a lighter moisturizer (Paula's Choice hydralight) instead of Obagi Hydrate. I currently started doing at home red/blue light treatments for acne (Baby quasar clear Rayz), but that's more for hormonal breakouts and not overall clogging. Anyway I'm not sure if there's anything else I can do. I don't eat dairy or processed food. Any recommendations or just accept the results I have? Thanks in advance!!!

I use retin A, so Im not obagi, but pretty close. I also have clog-prone skin.

I read the best advice somewhere recently and it worked on clogged pores and little blackhead type clogs that even retin-a wouldnt help on my nose. Nothing ever has!

Anyway the tip: when you wash your face, massage each clog prone area for 30 seconds. I have started doing that (30 on the nose, 30 on the cheeks, etc) and it really dissolves the clogs. I got complacent, also bc washing my face dries it out, and my unclogged skin ( i have worked for months with retin-a,etc) clogged back up pretty quickly. Hope it helps!

Just a thought: have you tried sonicleanse brushes? I have Rio Sonicleanse and use it for manual exfoliation, there is a high end Clarisonic, and olay has a cleansing system that has a reasonable price.
It is essentially a brush that rotates quite quickly and removes the top layer of skin and unclogs pores.
In terms of performance, the difference between these price ranges is in the speed of vibrations... I like my Rio, at time I bought it it was that or Clarisonic and Rio had half the speed and was less than half the price. Olay didn't have the product then.

Hi there, I'm new to Obagi Nuderm, have only been using for a few weeks, and I was advised (not by a dermatologist) to use the Obagi360 Retinol 0.5 with Blender. I'm not experiencing much peeling, just a little bit of redness, and I'm breaking out a ton. I do have oily skin and use the oily version of the system.

I just realized that Tretinoin and Retinol are NOT the same thing. Is there a problem with using Retinol or should I switch to Tretinoin?

Thanks much,
Mindy

Tretinoin is a brand of retin-A, in majority of countries it is prescription only.
Retinol is over the counter product, much less potent, but definitely not benign.

They shouldn't be used in pregnancy, during breast feeding or if trying to become pregnant. They have a lot of benefits for acne and anti aging (retin A is the only proven anti aging product).
When using either, protection from sun is a must, both UVA and UVB because of increased rate of skin cell turnover, skin is a lot more sensitive. And I would advise to use it only at night so that skin has a chance to recover a bit.

Keep in mind they can irritate the skin (as you have noticed), retin-A significantly more.
Even when moving to retin-A, it is advisable to start with retinols to build tolerance so you definitely started from the right direction.

There are skins who never become tolerant, so take it slowly, there are a lot of stories here on the forum. And listen to your skin Smile

Hi Maggie,

I've been trying to find specific information on Retinol vs. Tretinoin with Blender on the forum, search is tough... doesn't work super-well.

How would I know when it is time to switch? I'm new to using Retin-A/Retinol as well.

Thank you,
Mindy

Hi Mindy,

before I forget, don't do eyebrow waxing with either retinol or retin-A, I lost a patch of skin like that... Even if you are certain that you didn't put the product near the eyes, it doesn't matter, skin cells chat a lot, sort of like us Smile
I would finish with the retinol cream first, if you didn't use retinols before and wait for redness to subside. There are reviews on Amazon about people who are quite happy with that, so see if it does something for you before moving to retin-A.
If you decide to try, you can ask your derm for lower strength (0.025), I followed this guide: http://beautyeditor.ca/2013/02/06/how-to-use-retin-a-and-not-turn-your-face-into-a-red-flaky-peely-mess. There are a lot of videos on youtube as well.
Keep in mind that less is more. Whichever problem you are trying to solve, ending up with more problems is not going to be good. I've been using retin-A for 3 months (maybe longer) and still can't tolerate more than 2-3 times per week (or I end up a like a red flaky mess in some areas).
On the forum, you can search for retin-A (covers Tretinoin, Retin Micro-A and several other brands). All these brands have the same active ingredient, differences are if it is time released, is there a moisturiser in it so skin can adapt easier... Your derm should advise you based on your skin.
On the skin and makeup forum, there is a thread near the top about retin-A issues that people experienced.
And a word of warning from me: when I put on retin-A, I usually don't see the reaction until day 3, meaning be patient really, specially in first weeks if you decide to try...

Good luck!
Maggie.

THanks for the tip. I'm curious what cleanser you like to use for this technique?

If you take a look at oil cleansers, people have reported clogs loosening from gently massaging oil cleanser onto the skin.

You can make your own with 90% oil and emulsifier or buy a ready made on such as DHC, etc.

I make my own with emulsifier purchased from Garden of Wisdom. I was buying one from Silk Naturals that has apricot and grapeseed oil and emulsifier. As it is three ingredients, I was able to dupe this easily.

Thanks. I'm so scared to try the DHC because it seems while a lot of people like it, a lot also experience horrible breakouts. I'll submit a new post on oil cleansers.

I always patch test new products. I usually do a small area on forehead (prone to clogs) that could be covered up with bangs.

My chest area is quite sensitive and prone to redness. I will test there also.

Are you aware of your triggers?
