hey! I've been lurking this page for quite a few years and this will be my first post.... I just have a quick question for those of you who make your own Vitamin C serum/have acne-prone skin. I'll start by saying, my acne seems to be hormonal, as it's concentrated on my chin and jaw line area.... however, that being said, my skin is SUPER sensitive (pimple-wise) to almost everything and will break out within hours of using an incorrect product. I'm 31 this year and so my skin is now ALSO showing a few signs of aging, ie. enlarged(ish) pores, general decrease in nice texture, a few fine lines in eye area, and a pair of lovely festoon malar bags. So, I've been searching high and low for ingredients that will not only help with my acne, but also for aging. I have seperated this items into 2 different products, I've made a Vitamin C "essence", like those fancy Korean ones, and a Hyaluronic Acid/B3 Serum to follow it. I am using the fololowing ingredients::

Vitamin C Essence
77% Witch Hazel (not Dickenson's, I use one I bought from an herbs shop which has no alcohol, yes I realize this isn't considered actual "witch hazel")
20 % Vitmain C (I did work up to this %)
2% Green Tea extract
1% Ferulic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid Serum
83% Organic Rose Water (mmmm, smells SOOO good!!)
6% Niaminamide
3.5% Licorice Root Extract
3.5% Centella Asiatica
3% NAG
1% Hyaluronic Acid

I have not included vegetable glycerin in either of these products, I did on my first few tries, but I don't think my skin likes it. I'm pretty sure it breaks me out/casues milia. So I have had a blast making these, I'm even considering to start studying chemistry! haha Anyway, my problem/question is... I can't get the ferulic acid to dissolve. I realize it is not readily water soluble, however I researched that heating the water should help. So I added it to my heated Witch hazel, let it cool, and then proceeded with the rest of the ingredients. However I am left with a milky substance (I read that is normal) that settles..... so I must shake it up before each use. I don't mind shaking it, but I just don't know if it's as effective since it's not completely dissolved. Now, my other problem is, I know i'll probably need to you an alcohol of some type, BUT I need one that's NOT going to break me out. Propolene Glycol and Butylene Glycol are no goes for me. SO I am wondering if anyone has had issues with the vodka breaking them out. I think it's probably my safest bet, but I wanted to get some input before changing up my formula.

And as an aside, is it necessary to use a preservative in my Hyaluronic Acid/B3 serum??? I am only making 30ml at a time and I keep it in the fridge.... Any suggestions on one that is safe/won't cause breakouts..??? Thank you in advance for any input!! Sorry for such a long explantion!!

Hi, I'm not actually aware of the do it yourself vitamin c. I have been taking vitamin c as prescribed by our skin physician and it works and helps a lot. I suggest that you consult your skin specialist too for safety.
