I've been using Retin A (0.5%) for 5 months and it seems to be making my age spots worse. I only had one small one and now I have several. I'm 48 and have olive skin. Is there such a thing as the Retin A bringing the age spots to the surface?
Has anyone else experienced this as I can't find any other accounts of a similar thing happening?
I'm using spf50 every day so it's not new damage.
Is it a case of getting worse before it gets better?
Thanks

This happens to me - I think it might be inflammation. I stopped using it so much and the spots went back to their light color.

I tell myself its the intermediate step to gettig rid of them (if possible to do so)

In my experience, I would say yes.
I have been using Retin A (this time) for almost a year. The 2 sun spots I have high on each cheek have significantly faded but have not disappeared. When I first went back on Retin A (this time and an earlier experience) they did sometimes appear darker (off and on) for several months.
The Retin A does exfoliate and increase cell turn over so for darker spots that have been there awhile that is to be expected.
I'm also not sure that older spots (that go very deep) are ever going to be entirely eliminated but things like Retin A, C Serum, peels etc should all minimize them to some degree and with some patience .
