Hello. I picked up a sample of the EmerginC earth moisturizer and the first ingredient is olive oil. Can this be a skin irritant?

I've used a serum with olive oil and olive leaf extracts before and it was really nice and soothing (my skin isn't particularily sensitive though). So based on that experience I would say that olive oil is not an irritant but in fact a calming agent of sorts. Somebody please jump in and correct me if I'm wrong...

Paula Begoun (who in my opinion tends to be overly picky with anything that may even remotely be an irritant) recommended the use of olive oil straight from the bottle Surprised She says that "with continued use it will soothe and protect" the skin. Now, I don't know about you, but I'd much rather go for a nicely packaged nice smelling cream as opposed to oily smelly cooking oil Smile

*sigh* I feel the urge rising to try this EmerginC cream you speak of! Smile

HTH!

Thank you for your help. I will try it out then. I bought the EmerginC serum, Multi, and Cleanser too. I have very sensitive skin and I do not know which products are irritating. Do you know of a book or website that lists cosmetic ingredients and skin irritants?

Hello Janicemarie,
Dr. Irena Eris (sold here at EDS) is a very nice line of skin care products for sensitive skin. They list their ingredients on all of their products. But, you may also be assured that all of their products are made with natural and non irritating ingredients.

Well, Paula Begoun is well known for analyzing products and her book is called "Don't go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me". I don't know of a book that lists all irritants, Paula's book reviews each product from each of the skin care lines and tells you if there are any irritants in it. It's a good book to have, I use it more for the on-hand listing of skincare and makeup products than for her reviews though (which tend to be too picky IMHO). If you want to get it make sure you buy the newest version (she updates them every year or so and ads new skin care lines).

I have edition 4 (1999 I think), so I'm not sure if the next edition has EmerginC reviews or Irena Eris reviews. Skim through it next time you're in the vicinity of a bookshop.

Paula also has a website with some good info on there. Have a look at http://www.cosmeticscop.com/learn/article.asp?PAGETYPE=SKIN as it has descriptions of common ingredients (olive oil is discussed there) and also stuff about sensitive skin.

I started using olive oil on my skin about a month ago. It not only did not irritate my skin but soothed it. I was also very surprised that it improved my acne.

I quit using it because it was making too much of a mess (it splatters) then I found this lotion called Olive Magic which is olive oil and beeswax. It's the only thing that works on my cracked heels but I also put it anywhere that I have sun damage. It doesn't splatter though I do wait 10 or so minutes before putting clothes on or getting into bed because there's apparently a lot of olive oil in it.
