I read in an advertisement for the dermawand that acid products actually thin the skin. My original thought was that you peel off the outer layer of your skin so that the fresh skin from underneath comes to the surface, never heard about thinning? Anyone heard anything about this-I want to use my TCA acid 12.5% (Don't worry I'll be careful) but now I am not sure this is a good idea!  |

Pudoodles, I know for sure that irritation to the skin does damage to the supporting structure of skin. Even though you may not see that now, but several years from now, you will see it.
There is a drop off rate with peels, AHAs etc. I've read that its recommended you use them daily for 3 months and than get off them for 3 months. Alternating this way, will help skin to more or less recover. The cosmetic cop website is a good site that will answer all your questions. |

Do a search here for the 'hayflick limit'. A derm reckons that the skin's fibroblasts can only renew collagen and elastin so many times and excessive use of aha/bha or abraision causes the skin to hit the hayflick limit much sooner. The theory is that you have fantastic youthful skin until you are say 50 (if you have been using since mid teens, say) and then it all falls off
This is just a theory, but I go much more easy on aha/bha than I used to. I think Judy found some research on alpha lipoic acid that is supposed to extend the life of fibroblasts so you hit the HL much later

how frequently should one use products with AHAs, including face wash on dry skin? oily skin?

I can't say I'm surprised that there may be a finite number of times cells can turnover. The theory has been posited before, several years ago when acid cream usage became routine. I must say that when I was in my 30's and my skin started to get a little crinkly looking, AHA's came to my rescue and I've used them fairly regularly since. Now I'm 53, so I guess it's been about 15 - 20 years since I started. I've assumed that perimenopause (and the fact that I've never taken hormones) is the reason my skin has been thinning these last couple of years, but now I wonder if AHA use could be hastening the process. I've read that some women who've undergone Thermage have complained about the acceleration of skin thinning, so I scratched THAT off my to-do list. This "hayflick limit" totally freaks me out. I love acids -- so far nothing (short of plastic surgery) but them and sunscreen has truly improved my skin. Will I end up petrified??? Become a stone crone??? I've been in deep denial hoping it isn't true. Sometimes I think I ought to just give up and accept the inevitability of looking old. After all, I've had my day, and it's time to defer to younger generations. Instead of spending so much money looking for the Holy Grail, maybe I should seek pleasure in substance abuse since I've used acid creams so long that I'm totally f***ed anyway  Sorry, I've been trying to quit smoking. Nicotine deprivation, especially in winter, is a real drag (forgive the pun). |

OMG m.april! What a hilarious post! If you stay off the cigarettes long enough, you'll be doing stand-up!

| Had another hectic day today. Bought a pack of cigs. I'm a weak, worthless acid product user probably approaching the hayf*ck limit. May as well smoke and become a crinkled curmudgeon. Will use AHA with retinol tonight and Prevage tomorrow just in case, though, since I look *Absolutely Fabulous* for my age. |

On the skin bio forum Loren Pickart claims that AHA/BHA only causes skin thinning if used aggressively. In % no higher than about 8% there are no worries and it is better for the skin to use these lower % on a regular basis than to use 30%+ on an occasional basis, especially as it achieves the same results. I know that even before I had that nasty acid burn last year, my skin did not look good from the 30% and 50% glycolic acid peels and that it is looking bloody amazing now after 3 weeks using cellular skin's age limit which has a 7% I think.

I passive smoke - my work collegues were always on a break and I never got any breaks so I thought  I will just join them.
Have never tried acid stuff |

ok. Talk about a posting roller coaster. I just turned 30 and thought that I would jump on the 'peel' bandwagon. I have used the AHAs but never stuck with them because I thought that I was uneccesarily overexposing my skin during the summer months. But then the limits and collogen limit and all that---are we screwing ourselves with all of these products? Would that make me stop using them? I dunno. Probably not. I love all my products.
Well good thing I have always used them in lower concentrations. Now I will use them less often until we have more info. |
