Hi, I'm new to this forum. I've read a LOT of old posts but haven't read any direct comparisons between Dr H. Normalising oil and Decleor Aromessence Ylang-Ylang oil. I am having a hard time deciding which product to try. I also see that Jurlique has a day oil as well.

I have oily, acneic skin that is sensitive to many products and prone to scarring. I'm 27 and have had acne since puberty. I've used Bare Minerals in the past but didn't like it; I broke out, it looked shiny and highlighted my huge pores, many blackheads and any breakouts, plus the mineral veil felt grainy on my skin. (Weird?) Also I felt the foundation color choices were very limited, plus it was much too sheer and just didn't cover anything. I am a new convert to JI pressed base and just love it. It does not irritate my skin and it actually covers what I need to hide. Of course I get oil breakthrough during the day, but I always have with every other makeup, too! I just use oil-blotting papers.

I have used Proactiv in the past - not good - and have recently used Murad, but after reading so much here about stripping the natural oils from oily/acned skins, I stopped and am just using Cetaphil cleanser. No moisturizer since I am so greasy! I have also used Retin-A, Differin, topical erythromycin, other benzoyl peroxide preparations, tetracycline, amoxicillin. I don't want to use antibiotics any more, plus they didn't help very much. The retinol products burned me, and that made my acne worse.

I have just started the Bio-Medic glycolic peels from the esthetician in a local physician's office, and she started me on IS Active Serum (what a great product.) These are helping, but I am still oily and breaking out (at least more superficially, thanks to the peels and serum.) I will be getting the acne laser at the derm's office over the summer but need more help now.

The oil-on-oil idea seems counterintuitive but I have read so many positive reviews that I am willing to give it a try. But can anyone with similar skin who has tried both products make make a recommendation for me? Sorry for the long post - thanks for your help.

You probably know how much I love the Dr Hauaschka Normalising Day Oil, I also use plain Jojoba oil if I'm on a budget and I too would like to know what the difference is between the Dr H and the Decleor (appart from the price!!!!)

Nickle - the acne, were you ever recommended Roaccutane after all those antibiotics failed? Roaccutane shrinks your oil glands and cure the acne.

Of course, you'll have to have regular blood tests for liver function but I know it's almost a guaranteed cure.

Nickle-

I just wanted to recommend Jurlique's Lavender silk dust. (I have the same skin type as you and have also tried Bare Minerals and didn't like it for the same reasons). I bought it about a week ago and so far I love it. It is amazing how much it helps keep oiliness down. I am sure you have read about it on the forum (it is almost the same as the Rose silk dust) but I just wanted to let you know personally that it works really well.

It is good to know that you like JI pressed base. I am def going to try it.

I also have been deliberating on whether to try the Dr. H oil or the Decleor Ylang-Ylang oil. Guess I'll keep watching this folder. Smile

I had highly sensitive but oily skin until I started using the Y oil. It does wonders to your skin; atleast on mine. It controls oilness through out the day and heals acne/redness, and also controls them.
It does exactly what the description says. This product will not fade your existing scars right away but you will see a difference after constant use.

I only use this oil at night only and sometimes use the ylang ylang balm afterwards.
As for the Dr. H oil, I like that also but I have seen better results with Ylang Ylang oil.
I don't use any other decleor product except for ylang ylang oil and balm and the mask.

Try a sample of both or altleast Ylang Ylang oil and see what works for you. Hope this helps.

Hi Rosebud - I knew you'd ring in for Dr H! Also, thanks for all your postings on supplements - I take a basic multivit, Vit E, calcium, evening primrose oil, flaxseed oil (and glucosamine/MSM for my bad knees) but did not know about Vit A. I will add some and see if it helps.

Bad Bird - I have wanted to try Accutane but have heard mixed stories about its effectiveness. And it is hard on the liver. When I went to the derm last time I was ready to demand it but chickened out and settled with trying the laser instead. Though at this point, I just want the acne GONE. The only tx from the derm that has ever helped is a topical sulfur suspension called Sulfacet-R. It looks and smells awful; I used it in high school but it stunk up my whole bedroom and the smell got into my bed permanently. I'm not using it now for this reason.

Amnis - thanks, the Jurlique silk powder is on my list of products to get! Is the lavender better for our oily skin? I was wondering about the rose since my skin is so reactive and prone to redness and scarring.

BTW - The Murad lotion made me break out really bad. I wasn't going to use it at all, but I tried it after reading the product info that said, "Even oily skin needs moisture!" And the acne spot treatment was really damaging to my skin; even when I used the tiniest spot, right on top of the zit, it caused the tissue to die and then I'd have a huge reactive problem with scarring. Did this happen to anyone else? I haven't read the Murad posts yet. Though I did like the cleansing gel and treatment gel. I am not sure if I should use them or not, I still have a lot left.

Nickle,

If you want a cure, I still think you should try Roaccutane. As long as you take it under a doctor's supervision and go for your blood tests, it should not be a problem. And the stuff really works. It cured my younger brother's cystic acne, and my own less severe one (in less than 2 months, just before my wedding!). You don't have to take it long term, like some antibiotics. I really think you should ask your derm about it, and consider it. Smile

Hi Nickle

I've used both products and my favouite without a doubt is the Decleor one (although i am a big fan of other Dr H products especially the the cleansing cream). I've suffered with spots since the age of 11 (I'm 32 now) and the ylang ylang oil is the first product I've ever tried which actually prevents spots. It lasts ages and ages so isn't expensive. At first I used it with the hydra matt regulating fluid but now my skin is what I would class as 'normal skin' I use it with hyra floral emulsion.

All right, I don't have many breakouts (thank the good Lord!), but my face used to be a giant oil slick, so, in order, here's my 2¢:

• Dr. H Normalizing Day Oil vs. Decleor Y-Y Oil -- I tried 'em both, returned the Dr. H and kept the Decleor. It simply worked better, period.

• Jurlique Lavender vs. Rose Silk Dust -- I actually bought both of these at the same time and tested them against eachother by putting the Lavender on one half of my face and the Rose on the other side. They are both FANTASTIC at absorbing oil (click on this link to read my complete review: http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=2067&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0), I actually saw no difference in their performance. I ended up returning the Lavender Silk Dust simply because I liked the smell of the Rose version better -- it's divine!!

As I said, I don't suffer from acne myself, just an occassional pimple here or there, but I'd like to recommend a homemade apple cider vinegar toner for you (click here to read more about how it can help: http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=6102&highlight=acv). I know it sounds about as crazy as the oil-on-oil-to-control-oil concept, but ACV toner actually helps fade red marks from past breakouts. I know that one EDS member who tried it was astonished at how quickly it helped eliminated her past acne scars! Click on this link for the recipe to make this toner: http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=5981&highlight=acv. Try adding a few drops of Tea Tree Oil, Ylang Ylang essential oil and Lemon essential oil (available at any health food store) for even *more* acne and oil fighting benefits!

Also, you mentioned that using BE mineral foundation excenuated your "huge pores," so you've found JI pressed foundation to be a better bet (me too!!). To help reduce the size of your pores, have you ever tried the Dr. Hauschka Cleansing Cream? Just about everybody who has tried it is madly in love with this product. It helps suck the gunk out of your pores, thereby reducing their size because enlarged pores are mostly caused by debris clogging them. If there's no more gunk in your pores, then their size will be greatly reduced! Also under the above link for the ACV toner, there's a recipe for homemade Dr. H CC, as well.

Hope this info is helpful!

Good luck,
Carrie

Thanks all, for such great advice!

Bad Bird - I did make another appt with the derm to see about Accutane. I'm ready to try anything. If he says no I'll go to another doc.

Carrie, I had already compiled quite a shopping list for the health food store after reading all your awesome posts on essential oils and homemade recipes. I am going to try the ACV toner, the tea-tree oil shampoo and definitely the MOM trick for mattifying, as I am just too scared to try JI Absence (my skin has never liked silicone in the past, don't dare try it again.) I think I will buy Dr H. CC first so I know what to recreate later at home as far as texture and consistency.

I think I'm just going to take the plunge and go for the Decleor Ylang-Ylang, also the silk dust as a treat since after today, final exams will be OVER! That couldn't have anything to do with this exacerbation, could it? Wink

I go with everything that Carekate recomends, ACV is my saviour, I have also been using Jojoba oil with some Ylang Ylang essential oil mixed in - could I clasify this as homemade Decleor?????
Found a tonn of rosewater in the cupboard and am trying to use it up, I found if you put this into the ACV toner, it eliminates some of the vineger smell.
As for make-up I have not found anything that gives me the same irredescent finish as MAC does, I too have got my eye on the Jane Iredale Handy, especially as I read a review somewhere and the lady said her brush was still going strong after 6 years!!!!

Hi guys I'm pretty new to this forum, and I love what you said about Declor.
I too love JI on my acneic skin it covers so well. I use the liquid and then go over spots with the pressed power. If I have to touch up during the day I use the pressed powder.

I did however want to add my opinion about Accutane. I went on Accutane for about 6 months for pretty bad acne. It worked really well but only for a couple of years and now my acne is back, though definitely not as bad as before. My derm says women tend to need a couple of rounds becuase so often our acne is hormonal. But just so you know it isn't always a permanent cure.

Thanks for all the great advice!

Nickle: I wanted to reply earlier but I had a paper due (btw... you're done with finals- no fair! My finals are the first week of June). I also bought my silk dust as a treat- for getting through midterms Wink

Anyway, about the silk dust... I think it was Mabsy who said that the lavender tends to be better for our type of skin. It also contains rose so you get the benefit from it too (actually both contain rose and lavender... I guess one more than the other). I think the lavender is also very good at calming irritated skin. I'm not financially able to buy both to compare them side by side like Carekate did but so far the lavender dust seems to do a good job at calming my skin (plus combatting oil etc). (I did however try a little bit of the rose dust in a spa before buying the lavender a couple of weeks later. They really didn't have testers but one of the facialist ladies had a "Jurlique basket/kit" so she let me try it from there.) Anyway, my point is that while I really liked the rose dust's smell I thought it might be too strong. I decided to get the lavender hoping I would like the smell ok... and I DO! In fact, I love it Smile which is kind of odd b/c I've never really been a huge fan of the lavender scent (I don't hate it or anything) and always preferred rose scents. The lav dust has other delicious smells in it though (like rose...) so it's not inherently lavender.

Carekate- thanks for all the recipes and advice! I am going to do some health food store shopping as well this weekend. I also think I am going to try the Dec ylang-ylang oil... I am deliberating on whether I should go ahead and buy it first or try to make my own... I think I want to add a couple of other EOs to it. But I am worried I might counteract another EO- is that possible? b/c why wouldn't Dec through some more in there formula?

Oh yeah... Nickle- I sympathize with you about finals induced flare ups. Happens to me every time. It's incredible what stress does to the body. (I say this as I am fighting a f@*#ing migraine which my migraine meds seem to be having trouble battling).

Yes, it’s possible for some Eos to counteract each other. See this thread: http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=5922&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight= for some basic info regarding EO blends. In this thread, there’s also a link to a website which provides suggestions for basic EO blends.

Hi Amnis - Thanks for the advice on the lavender silk powder. I was thinking that was the one I should get but like you, I'm not a huge fan of lavender so I'm glad to hear you like it so well.

Jkibcole - I do know that Accutane is not a sure thing, but I am so tired of not having clear skin, I am ready to give it a try. I know the side effects stink, too. My friend has been through 2 or 3 rounds of Accutane and it didn't work for her - in fact, she's the one who recommended the glycolic peels to me, and while they are helping, I don't want to fight this problem anymore!

My skin is fair and scars SO easily. And while the glycolic peels help, they do make you look AWFUL for several days. I work in healthcare and felt so awkward - I felt like my patients were staring at me, wondering what was wrong with my face. Embarassed Actually, some of them did ask and I am just so self conscious and embarrassed about my skin to begin with . . . The fact is, people judge us based on our appearance and at 27, I don't want to get any more gross zits that make me look like a kid! Acne is a huge emotional issue for many people - for years I used treatments that didn't work, then I tried ignoring the problem, so of course now I have worse scarring for it. I will be going on to grad school in the next couple of years and I want to be able to present a professional appearance in school and in my career.

I'm so grateful for everyone's suggestions on this forum. Hopefully I am going to find something that works. Wink

P.S. I did get my hands on some Yon-Ka Juvenil for a huge cystic breakout on my cheek - I have been using it for four days and while the zit is still there, it is far less inflamed than it was. Plus I like the weird medicinal smell. Very Happy

Hi Nickle (I really apologize for, yet again, a long post but I can't seem to say what I have to say more concisely),

As I was reading your last post I couldn't believe even more similar we are in terms of our skin (and it's psychological effects). In fact, I wrote something so similar about a month ago on this forum. At our age (I am 25 but same difference) we shouldn't have to be dealing with such a thing! Sometimes I feel like I am being too vain when I say how much my acne makes me feel so self-conscious. But it does. I can't put it into words how I exactly feel about it. One thing I can say is that I feel like it makes me look like I don't take care of myself and thus it is a reflection of how competent I am with things in general.

I also think that because I have been so self-consciousness about my acne for so many years, it has become so intrinsic that I act a certain way and don't mean to (in regard to the persona I communicate to others. My shyness/self-consciousness is especially extreme when it comes to the opposite sex (I haven't dated that much and have only really had one serious boyfriend which should indicate something. I don't want to seem like I am narcissistic when I say this but I am not bad looking and I am a good person...)). I want to save up for laser resurfacing treatment but I am waiting for my skin to stop breaking out otherwise it would be pointless. BUT WHEN'S THAT GOING TO HAPPEN ALREADY! Mad

Anyway, I just wanted to say that I literally came home tonight and upon looking in the mirror thought "Geez... am I dreaming? My face hasn't looked this... porcelain...since I was little..." I mean, it's not perfect, mind you. But it has improved so much. It's just not as red and texturized (if that makes any sense). I still have those annoying red scars and other scars but they are not as noticeable. And, my face is not as oily (it would get where the area below my cheekbones and above my jaw and to the right or left of my mouth would be shiny. I would look like I sprayed cooking oil on my face or something) and now I just have a little oil on my nose. I think the SC phyto corrective and the Lavender dust is really helping. And somehow the medical regimen I am on is working alright. I am hoping that I am not going to have that infamous "flare-up". So far, so good (knock on wood). Did you say that you have tried it? (The benzaclin and tazorac?) It must be the way I am using it (as I described earlier in this thread) that is minimizing the peeling and irritation. The more and more I use pure plant extract and essential oil based products the better my skin gets. In fact, it might even be better in a few weeks after I start using the Ylang-Ylang oil (I am going to try Decleor first then if it works, make my own).

I also wanted to comment about Accutane. I think if you have the opportunity, go for it. I would if my doctor would let me (what's so annoying is that the doctor I had 4 years ago said that if I wanted to use Accutane I could but of course I chickened out back then). Now, the new doctor I have, despite my telling her that my former doc was ready to try it with me, won't prescribe it. I was like Mad after I left the doc's office with new benzaclin and tazorac script in hand. Her reasoning is that I have depression and am on antidepressants so I can't risk it. BS! I read on another forum that someone had the same problem as me and their doc just wanted to monitor her more closely and as long as she took antidepressants and was in regular therapy it was fine to take it. Of course now that I want to try it I can't. But in a way maybe that is okay because my acne isn't THAT bad (but it's bad enough). I have heard many times that suicide related to accutane use has not been totally confirmed. I don't know though.

Also, in regard to accutane, I think that as long as you monitor your liver etc you should be fine.

Hang in there! Smile I think you are going to find that your skin is going to change for the better.

Take care and don't lose faith Wink

p.s. I've never tried the Yon-Ka Juvenil before. Have you had repeated success with it?

Hi Nickle,

I'm going to sound like a broken down record but I really think the first thing you should do is get your derm to put you on Roaccutane. This is partly because (based on my own experience) whilst on it, your derm may insist on your using only a water-based moisturiser. It makes sense too, because taking Roaccutane to dry up your skin and putting oil on it sounds defeatist. So you may end up purchasing a lot of products which you have to shelf for more than 6 months. I am not saying the products discussed beforehand are no good; quite the contrary. Just that your first priority is to get rid of the acne and I'm a firm believer in hardcore medicine.

One thing about prescription topicals (and peels) is that it is going to make you more photosensitive. If you are sensitive about your existing scars, then you don't want hyperpigmentation to add to the problem. Do use a sunscreen if you can, but I understand it is not going to help with the acne since most sunscreens are occlusive.

My younger brother took Roaccutane when it first appeared in the market. His derm then didn't even monitor his liver function! Bloody dangerous but thank goodness he is alright. So don't think so much about side effects and stuff like that as long as your derm monitors you. I myself didn't have any side effects to complain about and I love the dryness whilst I was on it (it makes you dry everywhere).

Another thing you can ask your derm about is a topical antibiotic called Dalacin T. It is an alcohol based liquid which you dab on those big, inflammed, red and painful spots. I've not found anything more effective for maintenance when you don't have full face acne.

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Hi BadBird - You're not sounding like a broken record! I did NOT know that I would need to use a water-based moisturizer while on Accutane and have to refrain from using the oils for the duration of the treatment. THANK YOU for telling me now! Smile Last week I did make another appt with the derm, but it's not for several more weeks. I am calling daily to try and sneak in if someone cancels.

I am good about wearing sunscreen and staying out of the sun. Unfortunately, I am a keloid- former like my dad (weird with my fair skin!) As for the systemic dryness that Accutane is known to cause, that would be WELCOME on my greasy face for a change. I will just have to drink lots of water to stay really well hydrated. SCARY that the doc didn't check liver enzymes for your brother. I chickened out of asking my derm about Accutane at all last time since it has received so much negative press with the association with severe clinical depression and suicide, birth defects, liver damage and the fact that the FDA here is now tracking ALL accutane prescriptions. Most docs here won't presribe it at all anymore unless you have textbook severe pustular cystic acne. My skin is not that bad, but I am hoping I can convince him to let me try it becuase of my scarring issues and the failure of all the other conventional treatments.

At my last visit the derm gave me Duac topical to spot treat - it's clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide. I have been using it on a huge red cyst on my cheek for the past 2 weeks. I have been really good and not messed with it at all, but of course the I'm sure the inflammation that's been going on for TWO WEEKS will leave some red hyperpigmentation. (and the cyst is still nowhere near gone.) Sad The peels have actually been helping to lighten my older scars, but I have been fanatic about staying out of the sun.

Thanks for all of your encouragement and advice!

Hi Amnis - yep, it sounds like we are skin soul sisters! I feel vain, too, for worrying about my acne. But you hit the nail on the head - the way people react to my bad skin makes me feel grody and unkempt. It's like they have a puzzled expression on their face - like, "she'd be pretty if it weren't for that bad skin. Why doesn't she take better care of herself?" I also know what you mean about feeling less attractive to men. It's in our evolutionary biology to pick a partner with the external signs of health, including a healthy complexion. Fortunately I think a good personality and emphasizing your other good features can make you feel better about yourself. And yes, you can find a good man who finds you desirable - my husband doesn't hold my zits against me! It's mostly an emotional problem for us gals to overcome.

What you said about the laser resurfacing, and waiting to have clear skin before you get it done - what about trying the acne laser first? It is supposed to help shut down the oil glands in you skin and boost collagen production to reduce the appearance of scars. It's a series of five treatments, my first appointment isn't till next month so I don't know the exact name of it yet. But I'll post my results after. Also, could you go back to the other doc who would have let you try Accutane, since your current one won't?

As for the Juvenil, it's only been one week that I've been using it. I didn't have the massive purging that Chunlisa wrote about, but I did have other purging (in the form of those two peels) recently. I can only say that besides my huge cheek cyst and scattered other small, less noticeable spots, I don't have any huge new honkers yet. But think this has more to do with the peels and the IS Clinical Active Serum I've been using since the peels than with the Juvenil. But I'm not going to stop using it until I start the Accutane, either - I like it well enough in that regard.

I have the same problem with the gross oil-slick appearance of my face only hours after washing. Have you tried carekate's Milk of Mag trick? Dilute one drop of MOM in a four or five drops of water, spread it over your face and let it dry. Then watch for any white bloom where you got too much - just wet your finger and blend it away. I tried it yesterday and it helped my skin feel and look less greasy for quite a while longer than normal.

I was treated for depression in high school. Could you write a contract with your skin doc and with the doc who is following your depression about taking accutane and worsening of depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation, etc? It's probably because the FDA is monitoring the drug so closely now that she won't let you try it. But also think about the acne laser - they are advertising it as an alternative to accutane.

Sorry, too, for the long, long post!

Nickle,

I wouldn't put Milk of Magnesia on my face. It dries you out because basically, your skin has an acid mantle and the MOM is alkaline. You are disturbing the natural barrier of your skin and probably sensitising it.

hi there

new to the forum, but have had lots of fun reading all the posts so far!!

i am also an avid fan of dr hauschka, and also a new zealand range called living nature - i use both alternatively, and also use my own little mixtures.

when i did some research on carrot oil (base of DH normalising oil?) some books said that it is a photosensitive oil - which makes you prone to sun burn.

so i bought some pure carrot oil and mixed 10% dilution with EPO and drops of palmarosa.. and only use it at night.

i find that even though DH quince cream is great for my oily skin, I am still getting oily breakthrough in my tzone. but i am almost afraid to try the DH day oil because it may not hold on my skin long enough!! and it is also very expensive over here too!!

Hi Carekate,

Is Ylang-Ylang oil suitable for combo/dry skin? Or it's only suitable for oily skin? I am finishing my CsRx cream which is too thick for the summer anyway. And the last 2 moisturizer I used were Channel's Hydromax and Dermalogica's skin smoothing. I am very curious with teh ylang-ylang oil, if it's also suitable to combo/dry (but has oil on t-zone) skin, then I will use your recipe and make my own.

Thanks.

Hi BadBird,

Got in on a cancellation to see the derm today and he agreed to let me try accutane. I will probably start next week after all my blood work is sorted. I asked him about using water-based products, and he said it didn't matter - that what is going on internally will not be affected by what you apply externally - since sebum production will effectively be stopped, there will be nothing to clog the pores. He said to use what I prefer, and that I may need a moisturizer with some oil in it depending on how dry I get. Of course I will be stopping the peels, IS Clinical Active Serum and obviously will not get Decleor Ylang-Ylang at this point. What products did you use to calm your skin while on treatment? I am thinking about Cetaphil and adding SkinCeuticals phyto-corrective or B5 hygrating gels, but I know that Decleor also has soothing oils (Iris?) and wonder if these might help with the extreme dryness. Sorry, now this thread's off track - am I supposed to start a new one?
Thanks

Hey all-

Have been using Decleor Ylang Ylang for nearly two weeks and am fairly impressed- it has made me a convert. It has made my skin look really good and clear again but hasn't done much to reduce the oil. Does anyone know why this would be? Am also using hydra matte but nothing else over that.
Anyway, what I wanted to say most is that it has cleared up my chin area where I am prone to dermatitis. I had a rash of blemishes there a few days ago and spreading the oil over my face one night cleared them up straight away. Looked so much better in the morning. As the skin there is dry I would say it is good for dry skin too. Especially if it is mainly oily. So you could still consider this Nickle. However is you think all your skin will dry out definitely go for a more replenishing one.

Good luck with the accutane and I hope you find a good product for you.
