(NOTE: I originally posted this on Friday, 5/20, but it somehow disappeared, so I'm posting it again)...
You may have read other posts where I complain about having to shave my legs nearly every day and how much I hate the chore (not to mention the invariable razor bumps and burn I used to get before I learned to exfoliate first). Well, I’d been intrigued by the Gilette Men’s battery-powered razor (Mach Three Turbo, or something like that) and I was just about to put one in my basket at Walmart when I happened to notice a new display for the new battery-powered Venus razor. Since the Venus razor (the original, not the “Divine”) is my all-time fave, I instantly knew it was something I just *had* to try.
The theory behind this battery-powered, vibrating razors is that the vibrations make the hairs stand straight up, which allows the blade to really shave the hair off almost below the skin’s surface, so it takes longer for the stubble to actually reappear, although Venus touts the Vibrance’s exfoliating abilities in their ads.
My verdict on this new Venus Vibrance: it was awesome! Although I still exfoliate first with my Bare Escentuals Body Polish first, for the first time in my entire life, I only need to shave my legs every 3rd day, that’s how close of a shave this new vibrating razor gives me. I’m totally in love with anything that prolongs the need to shave as frequently! Another plus is that you can go ahead and use your plain Venus refill cartridges if you want (the starter kit only comes with one blade), before you’ll need to buy anymore. And yes, it can be used in the tub or shower without fear of electrocution! |

I was part of the Test Market Research Study for this razor, and gave it a BIG THUMBS UP! It is awesome. I tested it for a month, and no nicks at all. And I tend to nick myself often as I am always in a hurry when I shave.
This left my legs super smooth and I only had to shave every 3-4 days. It really is the BEST razor out there for women.

Hey Mom2TomMax -
Did you ever try to Venus Divine? Until I tried the Vibrance, I have to say that I preferred the original Venus to the “Divine.” Maybe it was because of the add’l moisurizing strips on it, but the Divine did not shave as close and it always left me with a horrible case of razor burn! Thank God when I bought it, I didn’t succumb and purchase an additional package of refill blades for this at the same time...I used up the two blades that came with the ‘starter kit,’ then used plain/regular Venus replacement blades on the Divine handle.
Also, did you ever try the Schick “Intuition”? I have never, ever seriously cut myself with a razor before although once in a blue moon I might give myself a tiny nick. Well, the first time I used this b*stard, I cut my legs to ribbons – seriously, the water in the bathtub turned pink from all the blood loss! I threw it in the trash straight-away. Save your money and stay away from this. I recommend the plain old Venus razor or the fantastic new Vibrance instead....

The starter kit (razor, one blade, and caddy/container that can mounted on shower/tub, just like the original Venus) was about $8.99USD (without a coupon). Also, don’t forget you need one AAA battery (I can’t remember if the starter kit included a battery or not!). I’ve had my Vibrance for over two weeks now, shaving my legs every 3rd day, and haven’t needed to put a fresh battery in it yet....
If you already have refills for the original Venus razor, you can use them on the new Vibrance, if desired, so you don’t have to buy a package of refill cartridges right away. My only gripe about the family of Venus razors is how expensive the refill blades are ($8.00USD for a 4-pk and about $12.99USD for an 8-pk at Walmart), but I bear it because it’s the best razor I’ve ever tried!! |

Totally agree with what you said about the Schick “Intuition”. This razor was horrible for me too. If I didn't cut myself, I missed some places.
Excited to try the new Vibrance!! |

OMG...the Schick Intuition was the second razor in the Test Market Study I took part in. I hated it! Took a gash out of my ankle that took 2 weeks to heal completely. HORRIBLE!!! And that is what I told the researchers as well.
As for the Venus Vibrance....yes, the refills blades are expensive, but I find that because you don't need to shave as often that they last longer.

I snapped this up as soon as I saw it at walgreens, as well. I also started using dermalogica's professional shave. It is just awsome...super close shave.
The started kit does come with a battery. Also, I buy my refill blades at Sam's or on Ebay for a substantial savings.

I've been seeing displays for these razors everywhere. Glad to hear it works!
Since my legs look like a gorilla's & I liked the original Venus, I will probably invest!
P.S. I know there are certain creams/moisturizers that are supposed to help slow hair growth - any recommendations? |

Must...buy...new...Venus!!!
I must agree, the original one is much MUCH better than the Divine!!
I took Carekate's advice with the Luxor pedicure wand (ended up ordering a second one since my mom inherited my first one!), so I'll without a doubt follow suit on this.
I don't mean to do a thread hijack or anything, but has anyone here tried an epilator? I'm very pale and have to shave every other day to get rid of dark stubbly hair, and I'm really thinking about trying epilation as well. I'm not scared of the pain, but I'm really freakin' tired of shaving all the time! I've had my eye on the Braun Silk Epil, but like so many others here, I don't want to buy stuff without seeing what everyone on this forum thinks first! |

I didn't have much luck with an Epilator, but I tried it years and years ago so maybe the technology has improved since then...? |

I have had luck with an epilator, I guess. I used to wax all the time, but when I came here, it just wasn't the same, so I took measures into my own hands. The thing that I find with it, is that it is a lot more painful than waxing, because it is slower, and it is kind of slow. I always use it for under my arms and bikini now, and my legs if I can be bothered. The hair needs to be 2 or 3 mm maybe. I just do it once a week, and never really let it grow. Seriously though, it does hurt, and I am not afraid of pain either. |

Thanks for the input, guys!
Argh, it does really sound rough...
Faith, would you consider epilating to be better than shaving? I've read all kinds of crazy reviews such as chicas saying that they have large pores on their legs reminiscent of chicken-skin, rashes that last for days, etc. Overall is it pretty comparable to results in waxing?
Cripes, I've even read accounts from chicks that used their epilators to do their own Brazilians! One day, maybe, I'd like to get there (or I'd like to think I'm that brave!), but I've still been in search of coaxing just to get the damn thing in the first place.
What brand do you use? |

I have been using this for almost 3 years, and waxed for 9 years before that, so I don't have a bad reaction on my skin anymore. I just use tend skin because I WILL get ingrowns now, if I don't use it. The results are better than shaving for me. I hate hair, and using this I don't have to deal with it as often. I also attempted my own Brazilian with this. I cannot explain to you how much it hurt. And this is from a girl that has probably had nearly 20 Brazilian waxes in her life. I bought mine in Japan, so it is a Japanese one by National, called Soie. If I were you, I would by the Braun one (a friend of mine uses this one and hasn't has a problem). Mine is kind of small, so it pulls the hair in smaller amounts. Pulling more at once, and as quickly as possible is the best bet. |

Okay, Faith, I be confused! I swear I’m not trying to be *deliberately* obtuse, but....
If you’re using an epilator with such success, then why are you interested in trying out the new Venus Vibrance? Do you still need to shave with a razor when you’re using an epilator regularly?
Also, whereabout on your body do you use the epilator? I.e.: do you use it only on your legs/bikini area? (I can’t even begin to imagine how much you suffered when you tried to give yourself a Brazilian with it – I remember how much it hurt when I only tried it on my legs!!!) Or can you also use it on your face, like for your eyebrows (obviously I don’t mean the finer “detail work,” but maybe the “unibrow” area between your eyes), “mustache” and chin (if you don’t have chin hairs *yet*, trust me, you WILL someday!!)?
When you use the epilator on your legs, how long do your legs stay smooth and how often to you have to repeat the process? Have you noticed that your hair grows back finer and/or have less hair now? I’m thinking that if it gives a really lasting result, that maybe I should revisit the issue of epilation. I’m willing to endure some pain if it means hair-free legs for longer! You know, I’m so envious of my mother: she’s part Cherokee Indian (aka “Native American”), which means that she naturally doesn’t have any body hair (yes, she *does* have pubes! But I’m talking about hairy armpits/legs or, for Native American men, hairy chests) so she never ever has to shave. And even though she has dark brown hair, her eyebrows are very fine and light-colored so she doesn’t have to tweeze/wax very often because the hairs are so fine and light that you can’t really see them unless you get up close to her face. I’d give my right arm (because I’m a Southpaw !) to have inherited that particular set of chromosomes, but unfortunately I was adopted....I swear, if I ever win the lotto or get rich selling my homemade skincare , getting laser hair removal on my legs will be one of the first things I do!!
By the way, does anyone else suffer horrible reactions from using hair depilatory creams like Nair or Neet or Veet? I love the idea of them (remove hair below the skin surface so it takes longer for stubble to reappear), but each time I try them, they either give me a horrible chemical burn/rash or else they simply don't remove all the hair or only remove it in certain patches, even if I leave it on for the maximum time recommended. Everyone else I know that uses them tell me that these products work fantastic for them, but I've never been able to use them successfully and I've tried just about every single one on the market. This is yet another reason why I loathe the chore of keeping my legs hairfree, because the only two choices I have are either waxing or shaving because nothing else works. And even though the results last longer with waxing, I hate the fact that you have to wait till your legs are as furry as a neanderthal's before the hair is long enough that it can be grabbed and ripped out!!
Am I alone in my frustration, or do any of the rest of you have similar tales of woe about keeping your body fuzz-free? |

hi Carekate,
Sorry if my post was unclear... I *always* use the epilator under my arms and on my bikini line. The only time that I might shave this area is if I want to be extra smooth-like for a hot date . To be honest though, my hair seems to be on a growth cycle now where I can get all the hairs; meaning they are long enough. I do this once a week, and I am always pefectly smooth after. It might take a few months to get the timing right.
When I said I did my legs when I could be bothered, that usually means once a month . The rest of the time I shave; which is why I am interested in the new Venus. Because I do not do my legs regularily, and I keep shaving and epilating, the growth cycle is not consistent and I will not be able to get a perfectly smooth leg with epilating alone. So, when I do my legs, I usually shave after too. The hairs that I am shaving are super fine and short. You can feel them, but you can't see them. After doing this though, I would say that I have no hair for a week, then it starts again. The hair that is coming after a week is not much though.
I tried this on my upper lip a few times, and it worked well. Be careful around your eyebrows though please. My epilator has 2 heads; one is a facial one, and one is for your body.
My hair definitely grows back finer and lighter. I never have that terrible stubble feeling anymore; it is always softer. Please keep in ind though that I waxed for years and years before this, so I am sure this helped too!!
**So to highlight, this is useful and helps me to shave much less, but it isn't perfect as their are different stages of hair growth and it is more painful than waxing. A benefit of this to waxing though, is that your hair only needs to be about 2 mm. Actually, doing it when your hair is just long enough is better; hurts less and grabs it faster.
To answer you other question about depilatory creams, I am like you. They start to burn me within a few minutes of putting it on, and I have to take it off too soon to get decent results. And, it STINKS!!! |

I really like my Schick Intuition I've honestly not ever had any problems with cutting myself with it and I love the convenience of having the shaving "cream" already there. I guess that means that I'll be loving the Vibrance.... when it finally gets to Australia anyway |

Carekate, I totally feel your pain about the body hair thing. I'm technically Polish, German, and Native American (as far as familial ethnicity goes!) and I don't appear to have gotten *any* of the Native American traits! My dad did *grumble*grumble* but I got stuck with the pasty skin, green eyes, and FREAKIN' DARK HAIR that comes back when I shave. Well, maybe it's not really *that* dark, but it is relatively speaking compared to my skin.
I've tried Nair, Neet, and all of those (ugh! stinky!), and even though my face isn't horrifically sensitive, my legs are monkeys on crack. I've reacted to everything under the sun except for using my Venus razor and Kiss My Face shaving cream. I'd get horrible red bumps, itching, etc. that I'd have to get a Cleocin and Nutracort prescription to heal. Even Schick and Bic razors didn't like me much. No love there!
I've tried at-home waxing and even though I didn't react, it was just too messy for me to realistically do every time it was needed. Yet again why the epilator sounds so appealing! I don't get ingrowns on my legs, but I do under my arms, which is irritating. From reviews I've read, the Braun sounds more promising than the Emjoi, but it's hard to get any details about the people that are using them.
Mabsy, are you still using the deodorant (the one that's listed on EDS under the Tend Skin category) that you reviewed about two years ago that was supposedly awesome for getting rid of ingrowns? I just came across that the other day and wondered if you were still digging it. |

I love my cheap razors the ones with no protective bars - they always seem to clog on me , I'm lucky the only place I get particularly hairy is down below .
I've tried everything on my 'box of delights', shaving, full brazillian home waxing (won't even go there ) and creams. Now you will all think I am totally cracked but I found the best thing, although it takes a lot of time is a pair of hairdresser scissors and a 'haircut' . Yes I have had a few nics and have gotten good at gymnastics this way but no irritation, ingrowing hairs and pain free. |

I think "box of delights" just found it's way into my vocabulary.
I've honestly never heard that one before!
Wow Rosebud, you're dedicated!
I've done the trimming thing, but not as extensively as necessitating the skills of a contortionist. I usually resort to shaving, which for the first day or two becomes razor-burn hell. My biggest mistake with that has been straying from my usual anti-inflammation lotion and trying that Bikini Zone rubbish, which burned and was horribly stinky!
Maybe the new vitamin-packed-battery-powered-Venusy-Goodness will be useful. I must add that and an epilator to my arsenal. I've decided. Even if my screams of pain may be heard 4 states away!!
One thing that was absolutely useless was the Norelco Moi razor! I thought it was so cute that I bought it back in Feb! It's good for if I have a little stubble and am going out last minute in a skirt, but it was totally useless for under the arms and other general gardening. |

izecka I did used to have a 'hedge strimmer' but it broke and I never got round to getting a new one, I only trim before my period also its rare you see me in a bikini.
Yes I think I will have to get a babyliss one, I don't seem to have as much free time as I used to Speaking of such things, my sister think I'm not right as I am a size 10 but insist on buying size 16 knickers, now I'm sure I'm not the only one am I???????? I always find that they shrink after a wash anyway.
I think for legs you can't beat shaving, nothing else gives a better finnish.
I tried those home wax strips for the box, they are brilliant when they work but awful when you pull off the strip and the wax stays on - so I thus proceeded to glue myself together and then glued myself to knickers and the boyf got over excited so I was glued to him (he got waxed too ) and the only thing that would remove the wax was white spirit (the stuff you clean paint brushes with!)
I think one day I will be having lazer treatment |
