How much of these spf 15 mineral powder foundations would a person have to apply to actually get 15x the protection from the sun? Is it more reasonable to consider the protection at, say, 5x or 10x? Or is it actually useless for protection? I'm hoping someone has an opinion. I was going to post this to the sunscreen threads but I figured the forum needed one more whole thread to discuss this avenue of sun protection (or non sun protection, whatever the case may be).
I have been wearing two different sunscreens (not at the same time), under my mineral foundation for about a week now. One with Octinoxate 7.5%, Octisalate 5%, Avobenzone 2%, and Oxybenzone 2% and Ombrelle with Parsol 10%, Mexoryl SX 2% but I think neither one is agreeing with my skin, my skin is starting to get irritated. It's not uncommon, I tend to react easily. I also am feeling not very protected with the whole oxide and avobenzone combo.
I've just ordered this:
"Eau Thermale Avene Sunscreen Lotion spf 25
Offers 100% mineral sunscreen protection for sun sensitive skin. Ideal for use on children.
Formulated with Avene thermal spring water to soothe and soften
Titanium dioxide and Zinc oxide provide non-irritating sun protection
Pre-Tocopheryl provides powerful anti-oxidant benefits
Highly water resistant"
I'm hoping it won't irritate my skin and will protect, I find the JI powder foundation soothing and it has mineral sunscreen ingredients in it so my hopes are up. I'm also hoping that even if the formulation is somewhat oily that it isn't going to clog my pores.
This search for adequate sunscreen this weekend has been exhausting! |

Hi Lolli,
According to JI, one normal layer would give you the SPF15 protection.
I think it depends on how much you use. It is definitely not useless protection but you have to put enough of a layer and not miss any part of your face.
Lots of people think that chemical sunscreen actives irritate their skins, but I think, more often than not, it is the inactives that are the culprits.
Avene is good. Hope it suits you. |

Thank you Bad Bird, you are a gem!!!! You are probably so right about the inactives irritating, I hope the Avene is soothing. Vichy thermal water products I find very soothing, hopefully the Avene is similar. |
