I see from a BBC Three trailer that they are planning to show the American version of 'The Office'. Was just wondering if any of the US members of this forum could say how it compares to the original version from the UK. Hard to imagine that anybody could compete with the original David Brent character. Smile

I tried to watch the first episode, but I had to change the channel after five minutes because it was beyond bad! With few exceptions, we don't seem to have much luck with adapting Brit shows for U.S. audiences....

The American Office was unfortunately a bloody mess. I unfortunately haven't had a chance to really watch the British version (I love BBC shows when I can catch them!) but the version over here is just really contrived and feels awkwardly put together (not to mention the characters I couldn't bring myself to care about.) With British humor, things can be awkward and messy, but it's "funny." With the version of this show over here, it just feels like the characters try to make a joke or do something funny, and it just kinda dies or doesn't get the reaction they want from the rest of the cast, and so they move on to the next line. I actually just ended up feeling sorry for everyone... it made me sad more than I laughed. American tv seems to have a hard time pulling off dry, sardonic, quasi-abusive humor. I think Frasier's one example of the closest we can come. Smile

I just did not find the British version funny at all. I do like Fraiser Wink

I wasn't a great fan of the office either. I just couldn't get into it. I do think USA does some great sitcoms and so do UK. The originals are always much better than changed to suit country versions. I don't understand why they take a great format because they like it and then change it beyond recognition.
Then again I have the same problem when I read a book and they make it into a film and I wonder as I am watching why they bothered as all the best bits seem to be missing. Not all films but about 99%. Brick wall
