Hi there, guys!
I've been using EDS for over a year now for regular orders, I was so pleased with the fact that I didn't have to pay duty charges, but out of the blue, I had 2 parcels with a fee, one for £20 another one for £34!!!! Did anytbody else have this??? I'm a bit disspointed, I know it's nothing to do with EDS.
Any thoughts?

Usually my orders from EDSarent taxed either, but the offical low down on it all is that if your item is worth over £18 (as revealed on the customs receipt), you get a customs charge of VAT at 17.5% + the Royal Mail fee which is a ridiculous £4.
Contact EDS and they should be able to help you with future orders.
Hope that helps, I feel really bad for you because I know how awful it feels to get a customs charge, ive had many in the past from strawberrynet, but fortunately they refund them.

I am cheesed off becase of it and the majority of this fee goes to Royal Mail, it's ridiculous!

The bag was about USD100, UPS charged (I don't remember exactly now) over $30 service charge. The total including misc. duty and taxes and service fees was about $70!!! Gee, my bag was only $100! Anyway, I refused the package and UPS sent it back and I requested for a refund. |

Hi there. Strawberrynet is really good, as they refund customs taxes, but im pretty sure EDS doesnt do this. In fact, im pretty sure strawberrynet is the only company online that will refund customs charges.
Do contact EDS telling them about this problem and theyll advise you on future orders. Unfortunately, nothing can be done about this one. You could refuse the item and let it get sent back to EDS. I have done this once with another company - it never got there. This whole process will take a long while even if it does happen  .

and whats really RIDICULOUS IS
they add the cost of POSTAGE to the cost declared on your items to count the VAT and they add their administrative fee for this on top of it

That's weird! I've had several packages from Canada delivered to the US and I've never been charged customs once! UPS seems especially immune to such fees, plus the shipping was quite low. Of course I say this and I am awaiting my Organic Makeup Company order and it's going to have a huge fee slapped on it.  |

It very much depends on where the products are made becuase of free trade. If the product is made in the US, there is no duty, but customs might charge me the 7% GST. I don't know if it is just luck or whether if the product is above certain dollar value, then they charge me the sales tax.
On the other hand, if the product is not made in the US (like most things, they are probably made in china, pakistan, india...) then it is likely that duty will be charged. For example, pretty much almost anything I buy from J. Crew or Victoria's Secret is charged duty. The only difference is these two companies are large and established and all the duty and taxes are calculated in your bill when you order -- so no surprises and no extra handling fees from the shipping company.
Anyway... good luck with your order. I hope you don't get charged an arm and a leg!!!

It's import duties we are paying, the US allows it's citizens import up to $200 US or something, don't quote me, it's a lot though. We in Canada are allowed $20 CAD imported from the US, it's more from Hong Kong and UK because I've ordered a few things where the value was up towards $50 CAD and had noncharges at all. Even if we get a parcel marked 'gift' from the US, if the value is over $60 CAD we have to pay the import taxes our government insists on.
It's quite extraordinary that Strawberry.net refunds these fees, I've never heard of another company doing that!
If you get something off eBay and the seller marks the value too high, tear the customs form off the package, fill out the form, print out the eBay invoice and/or auction page and mail it to your nearest customs refund office, the address is on the form. If you show them proof that you didn't pay the inflated amount, they will refund the fee. I've done this many times.
Just last week I sent on it, I bought something for $4 US and the seller marked it at a $25 US value  I was charged GST PST and the $5 fee, but I should be getting my refund cheque soon. It's a pain and I ask sellers now to only mark the value paid on the customs form but I get lazy sometimes and inevitably, someone marks the parcel way too high. I try to keep my eBay purchses below that limit, about $16 US unless I know the seller will mark the parcel as a gift.
I order from a few companies off eBay who mark parcels as 'gifts' which is so cool. Some don't mark as a gift and a lot of times it's less expensive to order a few >$16 orders than one large $50 US when you factor in the taxes and duty.
I've dealt with this a lot, sorry for the novel here!  |
