I use tend skin...it is stinky but it is the only thing that works for me. You could also try a bodywash/scrub with AHAs. |

I get this too. I exfoliate the night before with AHAs and/or if I have the time I mix together honey and AHAs and leave it on my legs for half an hour or so prior to shaving. It really seems to work, very occasionally get the odd one or two now.
I got this idea from Carekate (I think she uses aspirin). I expect she has a recipe on the DIY sticky at the top of the page and she's offered lots of advice about this before so if you do a search for 'ingrown hairs' something should come up. HTH Molly |

Hi everyone,
I can't seem to find any bodywash/scrub with AHAs. What kind are you using? |

Hi everyone,
I would like to say thanks to my Italian father I too have very hairy legs. I use a mens razor with three blades and this really seems to help reduce rasor burn. My skin is so sensitive and there is very little I can put on after, yet I discovered the very very best product is Dr. Hauschka Rose Body Oil. You put it on right after. I also use a shaving cream from the health food store called Avalon Organics. Really works well!!!!!!!!!!!
It also helps to soak your legs in a bath before for a few minutes to soften the hair and open the ostia.
Waxing is the same for me, does not last and I have tried it so often over the years.

I've only tried one AHA scrub but I loved it. MDF Face & Body Scrub. It has 15% glycolic acid. Peter Thomas Roth also makes AHA body scrubs and shower gels and moisturisers. I think Eucerin does as well but they make only make a body lotion - not sure. |

| Alright. After every single time i shave i get these little red dots on my legs. at first it was just mostly at the bottom but now its extended everywhere on my legs. At first i thought i thought it was razor burn, but after I've tried everything, every type of razor, shaving cream, i have even used shampoo, lotion, every kind, nothing works. What is going on and what am i supposed to do? |

My legs used to do this (I opted for laser removal in the end, as my ingrowns were getting out of control). Is your skin a wee bit sensitive, perhaps? Mine used to have red dots all over for a couple of days after shaving, waxing, etc. I attributed this to sensitivity.
Nothing worked for me, hence the laser.
Maybe you could try soothing the area with pure aloe vera gel afterwards? Also, make sure you only shave in one direction and don't keep going over the same area more than once (or twice at the very most).
Believe me, you have my sympathy. It's really annoying and I found it impossible to cure. |

| When I first started using an epilator, I was covered in the red dots but I applied rosewater mist straight after and I have never had an ingrown hair. Also the red dots disappeared within about 10 to 15 minutes. I still use the rosewater mist after shaving or epilating and never have ingrown hairs. The brands I have used are Renew and Kosmea. It is very simple but effective. |

Tendskin helps me with preventing/decreasing the red dots and ingrowns. I epilate every other week and shave in between.
All Terrain's Aloe Skin Repair Gel (I think that's the correct name) is awesome with clearing up all kinds of skin issues, especially those red dots. It has wonderfully natural healing ingredients, including lavender, German chamomile, sea kelp, etc.
I would think a relevant factor could also be diet. I used to bruise like crazy and I would get rashes during stressful times until I learned that 1000 mg of Vit C (ester-C) would help, and it did. Now that I take Vit C and prenatal supplements, I hardly bruise or get rashes during stress at all any more. Maybe you're deficient in something? Try taking a reliable prenatal vitamin supplement for 2 months and see if that doesn't clear up the problem. |

hana-- I've found the best way to prevent ingrown hairs is to use a sharp razor and a good shave cream. I like the Shick Quattro for women (for blades, so it give s a very close shave), and the best shave cream out there is Kiss my Face moisture shave. It really creates a barrier between your skin and razor.
Then, I usually rub my legs down with a mixture of avocado and sesame oils, with clary sage EO. |

| I use a Braun epilator about once a week I get ingrown hairs instantly if I don't exfoliate vigoriously every single day. It's a real pain! I've found that homemade salt scrubs (sea salt mixed with vegetable oil, lemon juice and a few drops of EO) counteract ingrowns, though. |

I am not one for making things myself. Never fails I screw things up . However, the following potion that Carekate posted is so easy and it works or buy Tend Skin (great product):
| Quote: |
What you need:
Uncoated aspirin
70% alcohol
Witch Hazel
A measuring cup/bottle
2 bottles used to shake mixtures
1 8oz or more bottle/container to keep finished product
What you do:
1. Pour 5.5oz of 70% alcohol into one bottle.
2. Drop 18 uncoated aspirins into the alcohol. Cap bottle and shake.
3. Pour 2.5oz of witch hazel into the second bottle.
4. Drop 8 uncoated aspirins into the witch hazel. Cap bottle and shake.
5. Wait awhile (30 minutes to a whole day) for the aspirins to dissolve in the liquids. Shake periodically to help dissolve aspirin and mix. NOTE: not all of the aspirin will dissolve. That’s ok- some of it never will.
6. Now combine both the alcohol and witch hazel mixtures together into one bottle. Make sure you shake it up before you pour them out so you also get the aspirin residue into the new bottle.
This last bottle is your Tendskin! Use 1-2 a day. Reduce usage if you experience dryness or flaking or irritation. DO NOT USE IF YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO ASPIRIN. Make sure you shake it well before each use. |

| I always used to use St. Ives Apricot Scrub for Oily Skin on my body and not my face, and it really helped with ingrowns if I scrubbed hard with this stuff and those scrubby gloves you can buy at the drugstore. I also sometimes use Beauty Without Cruelty's AHA Cleanser (for face, again) on my body and not my face - too drying for a facial wash, IMO, but it works great on the body! |

A product primarily containing BHA at the right pH will get rid of razor bumps. |

dear majorb,
could you please advise me about how to get this problem fixed by laser, how many treatments it took, how much it cost etc? i'd be ever so grateful... my friend's 15 year old son called me chicken legs the other day now i feel more self conscious than ever about my legs and desperately want the problem gone.
best,

| I used to get this problem when I shaved against the grain of the direction the hairs were growing on my thighs. |

| This used to happen to me until I started exfoliating before shaving. Plus I put lots of shaving cream on before hand. |
