Hi, I JUST discovered this thread and am SHOCKED by how amazing some of your results are!
I have extremely problematic skin. My cheeks, jawline and chin are covered in large, dark acne scars with a few cystic pimples thrown in. I've had dermatologists prescribe me antibiotics and topicals that have yielded little result. I'm 20 years old and my skin has been SUCH an embarrassment for me for so long and I DESPERATELY need some sort of extreme treatment to finally put these scars in the past. I think that the Obaji line might do the trick, but I'm afraid of the "ugly" stage. After reading the Obaji gone WRONG stories, I'm even more hesitant!!
I'm wondering how effective those who've used/use the Obaji line think it will be on me. Again, I'm 20 years old with pretty think combination/oily skin. I start school in about 4 weeks so I don't know how willing I am to come back with peeling, red and pimplier skin.
PLEASE HELP!! |
I have the exact problems! please help! |

GO see a skin specialist and don;t do the system alone. Like all other products some work for some people while they are hell for others. Obagi NuDerm saved my skin if used properly and Iam now on maintenance. It is very powerful and should not be used without supervision. Sorry to rant but your face is like the rest of your body if you were really sick would you treat yourself and hope that it was the correct thing or go to a dr. |

I agree with red head. Also, your being sensitive, and no mention of hyperpigmentation, I would not recommend obagi to you. |

I use the Nuderm 2-3 times a week and other general skincare on the rest of days. |

Day two of Obagi Nu-derm. I woke up looking like my eyes and the bridge of my nose was almost swollen. Maybe I used to large a portion of the Retin-a? I'm going to be a little less generous this evening and see if it makes a difference. I am a big fan of TCA peels and Micropeels so I'm curious if my skin will be healthier and have an easier time... I definelty feel like I have a sunburn. Not uncomfortable really but just makes me really aware of the skin on my face. Curious to see what tomorrow will bring. I own a design firm and am in front of clients every day. I'm a little nervous about looking like a freak. Anyone have any recommendations for make-up that will not intervene with the program? |

Hi, I am new to this Forum, in fact I just joined today. Ok, let me share my Obagi stories with you. A friend reccommended this product to me around 7 years ago. I started straight with the Nu-derm line and religiously followed the whole regime, starting with cleanser, toner, clear and sunfader in the day time. This was followed at night by cleanser, toner, clear and blender with Retin-A. This was done everyday for about half a year.
My face started peeling after about 4 to 5 days. Now I live in the Tropics and it's like 35deg celsius everyday!! My face was red like a beetroot everyday and was quite painful and itchy. Now the good news! After I would say about 4 to 6 months, my skin stabilised and the redness was not so pronounced although there was still some degree of redness. What emerged after the peeling was baby soft skin!! My Facial Lady even said that my skin felt like marshmallow! And not just that, the little bit of pigmentation I had just vanished, although I must say I do not have a major problem in this area.
After achieving this, I scaled back on the Blender with Retin-A to three times a week. This helped to control the peeling.
So this went on for a few more years. And then the local Obagi supplier in my country decided to give up this product and for the last 1 1/2 years, I was not able to buy this product. My pigmentation came back with a vengeance! And within about 6 months, my skin went back to pre-Obagi days.
Then I visited my sisters in the States in October2008 and managed to purchase this products. I have now been back to using Obagi for the last 2 weeks and within a short time, my skin is looking much better and to my delight, my pigmentation has also lightened! Imagine my happiness.
By the way, I am 49 years old and will continue using this product as it's has been proven in my case.
I hope this information has been helpful. |

I saw big results after using Obagi for about 6 weeks. I used it because I have freckles and a couple of brown spots that really bothered me. They faded and only one brown spot remained but had shrinked in size. The first few weeks were really awful. My face was hurting all the time and I was peeling like crazy. I stopped using after about 8 weeks but the spots got bigger and a bit darker so I use it once or twice a week to keep them light. I guess I will have to keep using HQ or else the brown spots will just come back. |
Just wondering if anyone else had the same issue as elee123? Would really like to know before investing the "Doe"! |

I agree.
Obagi is perhaps the best thing i've done for my face short of plastic surgery.
I've been using Obagi now for a few months and cannot believe the difference.
I use the whole routine faithfully to include the retin-a at night and although the peeeling was uncomfortable in the beginning, eventually it did subside.
Proof that the system is great is when i went to the beauty salon the other day to have microdermabrasion done. The aestetician said she'd do it but that i don't need it because she told me i had gorgeous skin.
I had it done anyhow and it helped with the tone and glow but all the way she kept on commenting how great my skin was.
I recommend the product, it's serious stuff not a gimmick.

Trish just wondering, it's 3 years later! Are you still using Obagi? If so what kind of skin issues did it correct for you? I mean, did you have acne or scarring beforehand? Hope to see your post soon. |

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the Obagi system (I'm on week 4 of Nu Derm)...
I had heard about Obagi before - but really didn't know much about it until I found this forum (while I was actually searching for information about dermarollers...). Because of the great things I'd read about using Obagi for melasma, I decided to try it.
Bought the Normal/Dry/Sensitive Kit (because it's cheaper on EDS as a kit rather than buying it as separate product - Yeah, I'm cheap )
So far, I'm getting the peeling and redness - but that's what I expected. With a bit of trial and error, I figured out how to minimize the effects when it got to bad in certain spots. (The Exfoderm is great - but can be a bit harsh around the mouth area - so I put it on all of my face - and then wipe off most of it from around the mouth.)
From another forum member, I found out about a book that Dr. Obagi wrote - so I ended up buying it. (It's really expensive, and not quite what I expected, so I definitely wouldn't buy it again...) BUT, it does really explain how the Obagi system works. (It's mostly about his chemical peel systems - but it also explains about Nu Derm and his other products).
Basically, the Nu Derm system is a system using medical grade products. It's not a gentle topical "feel good" system. So, the results and effects are definitely stronger than you would get with basic store brands. It really is meant to be used under the supervision of a doctor/dermatologist. (Of course, me, being the experimenting type - am doing it on my own - but I've found some great Obagi "mentors" on this forum... )
From what I understand of the Nu Derm system - you have to use it for 18 weeks the first time to get the results you want. I think it's because it takes this long for the skin to remodel itself and for the new, better skin to be generated. I haven't yet seen the results I want (I have some melasma on my cheeks that has been there forever and I want it GONE!) but I know it may take some time. So far, though, I have noticed that my skin texture (other than the peeling) is much softer and seems more even.
For me, the peeling has been manageable. The first couple of weeks were weird - but, having been on Renova for a few years, I'm okay with it. I have to say though, that the peeling on Obagi is definitely "stronger" than I ever had with Renova. It may sound weird, but I actually like the peeling - because it shows me that this product is working. (Though, it is very embarrassing to go out to dinner with your girlfriends - and find out later that you spent the evening with huge flakes of skin hanging from around your mouth!)
The thing about Nu Derm I found out is that you can back off the products if the peeling and redness gets too bad. It doesn't stop the process if you do - it just delays it a bit. Everyone's skin is different - so everyone's approach should be different. (I found a website that shows the different ways the system can be used - you can go aggressive, moderate or mild - depending on your needs...) Going slower with the products doesn't mean you won't get results, it just means that it may take a bit longer, is all...
Anyway, just my two cents worth about my experience (thus far) with Nu Derm. (And, no, I don't work for Obagi - I just like the system...)

Hi Sherri,
I notice you are very experienced and helpful for Obagi products. I am new for Obagi Nu-Derm, and have used it for almost 4 weeks, now I can see quite big change on my face, as I didn't try the same program on my neck, now it looks quite different between face and neck. I wonder if it's ok to use all or part of Nu-Derm products on my neck aslo?
Your kind reply is highly appreciated!

Helen, not sherri, but according to Dr. Obagi's book and my nurse, you can use the Clear and Blender/Retin A on your neck (and your chest and any other body parts!). Do not use the exfoderm on your non-facial body parts. You use the Clear, Blender/RA only 2-3 times a week on the non-facial parts. And, make sure to wear a good sunscreen on all areas you are using the Nu Derm products. |

You can, azumma. Just remember, no exfoderm there (only Clear, Blender/Retin A) and only use it 2-3 times a week on non-facial areas. |

Hi, Helen. Yes, you want to use the Elastiderm twice a day AM and PM), even though it is a "day gel". Here is an article regarding the Elastiderm:

ABSTRACT
Abstract: Cutaneous ageing, as visualized at the exposed areas of skin, reflects dramatic alterations in the structure and function of the extracellular matrix of connective tissues. Among them, the elastic fibre network, which is responsible for the physiological elasticity and resilience of normal skin, undergoes degradative changes leading to loss of functional elastic fibres. A potential strategy to counteract these degenerative changes entails topical application of a compound that may lead to regeneration of the elastic fibre network. In this study, we have evaluated the effects of a bi-metal, 0.1% copper–zinc malonate-containing cream that has been shown to efface wrinkles in clinical trials. An effect on elastin biosynthesis and elastic tissue accumulation in skin biopsies was observed in 21 female patients with photoaged facial skin, as measured at baseline and at 6 weeks of treatment. Histopathological evaluation revealed evidence of elastic fibre regeneration, including those extending perpendicularly towards the dermo-epidermal junction within the papillary dermis. Elastin biosynthesis, measured by semi-quantitative immunofluorescence with an antibody recognizing only the newly synthesized, uncrosslinked tropoelastin molecules, suggested statistically significant enhancement of elastin biosynthesis by the bi-metal compound when applied twice daily. Accumulation of elastic fibres was confirmed by assay of desmosine, an elastin-specific crosslink compound. These results suggest that the bi-metal, 0.1% copper–zinc malonate-containing cream has the propensity to increase elastin synthesis in human skin in vivo, and that regeneration of elastic fibres may contribute to wrinkle effacement in female patients with photoaged facial skin.
To note, the subjects did have a varying degree of improvement, both clinically, and histologically, so it's safe to say that while TWICE daily application for 6-8 weeks (MUST BE TWICE DAILY TO HAVE EFFECT) works for MOST, it may not work for ALL. LIke most things, it's trial and error on an individual basis, but the study was strong, good immunohistological work up, etc. Another note was the the cream withOUT the active ingredient also yielded good results, not statistically significant, but present.
On your nonfacial skin, use the Clear, Blender/RA only at night and again only 2-3 days a week, ok?
Good luck! |

So what should I do on the other 4-5 days of the week? can I use some other products (such as, Estee Lauder that I used before Obagi) on my neck? or just do nothing ?

Hi Rileygirl,it's highly appreciated for your adice! Now I am in the Week 4 of NuDerm, my routine is as following:
AM Routine
Obagi cleanser
tone
Retin A (Adapalene-0.1% Retin A )
clear
exfoderm
eye cream
sunscreen
PM
Obagi cleanse
tone
clear (every day)
blender mixed with Adapalene-0.1% Retin A
eye cream
I read some posts on this site, didn't find the other people use Retin A before Clear in the morning. Should I keep this routine until 6 weeks? My face main problem was chloasma, and now it's quite improved.

HelenZHP I used Obagi Nu-derm religiously for 3 yrs and then about a year ago stopped (very stupid move btw). I was under the impression that Retin-A should only be used 1x a day and only at night as it is unstable and very light sensitive. |
