despite having a relatively good complexion, i wear foundation over the years in a quest to look even better.

i use cle de peau (about singapore 199 dollars) which in my opinion is the best out there in the market. it makes your skin looks like skin at its best.

anyway as this is extremely high price, i use normal foundations on "ordinary days" and over the years on days without foundation i find my skin taking on a sallow jaundiced look.

i am convinced chemicals in foundations over the years hurt the skin and one has to rely on it constantly to look as good. what i'm saying is i think it hurts the skin and makes it uglier than life before foundation

over recent months i started not to wear foundation out of sheer laziness and found my skin is returning slowly to a less jaundiced good condition

does anyone feel this same way?

Yes! I agree with you anon! Actually there is a thread on organic skin care a few pages back in this forum and also the products review forum (I think). You can't miss it since there was so much discussion on it.

I have since stopped wearing foundation for several years now. I do wear concealer on some burnt out acne but I do have relatively very good complexion and refuse to cover it up. I think I look older wearing it. I like the luminosity skin has on its own.

Thank god I'm not the only one Very Happy
All through my teens I covered my bad skin with foundation and concealer and it only made it worse. My skin healed a lot in my 20's down to vitamins and I found I look far better with minimal make-up.
Now all I use is a tiny bit of concealer and blusher and my skin has never looked better. I can't stand to wear foundation, it is like my skin can't breathe.
The only foundations that look OK are the pressed powder versions. I like MAC Studio Fix when I'm going out and am dying to try Jane Iredale.
But overall my complexion looks best minus the gunk Wink

I believe that foundation is only bad for you if you don't completely remove it at the end of the day. It actually serves as a barrier between your skin and environmental assaults.

Another thing - everything has a shelf life. If you don't use up a bottle/pot of foundation after about a year or two, then it probably will do your skin some harm because of bacteria growth, expired chemicals etc.

The sallowness in skin is actually a form of sun damage.

That's an interesting observation. I have not noticed anything similar but I am a fan of "less is more" myself. I use mineral foundations but also some tinted moisturisers or just color tints instead of normal liquid foundations.

Have you tried foundations from companies that make natural cosmetics? Eg. Dr Hauschka or Jurlique? I have not had a look at their ingredient list but I am assuming they would have less chemicals in them.

i think my theory is simple.
when i look at my face versus exposed parts of body say arm or legs.. they look better even tho a lot more care x 10 is spent on face than legs or arms..

i am guessing the less put on it, the better be they organic or not Razz

...Isn't the skin thicker on the arms and legs though? Also, your face is exposed every day to the elements whereas your arms and legs are normally only exposed in the summertime.

I generally just wear a light dusting of mineral powder for its evening and sun protection effects

Badbird made an interesting suggest..that foundation could be a barrier to environmental assaults..i only use minerals on my skin, and my skin is so much healthier because of it...if i don't have anything on my skin, i feel vulnerable to the environment...and it does show on my skin.

The skin on the face is much more fragile than the legs and arms. I noticed the same thing yesterday; how soft and even the rest of my body looked in comparision to my face. I usually get at least 8 hours of sleep a day and those dark circles still like to make me look tired...

Hi! I have a bit of an answer.. use a fine makeup BRUSH when using a liquid foundation. You use less, much less, and keeps the container cleaner.
I don't wear minerals well; and I don't like heavy foundations; so I wear a tinted moisturizer that I use over my light regular moisturizer and I use the brush.
My skin is maturing, still oily T-zone and drier sides and don't care for most foundations.
But I've found;
Cllinque's "real makeup teint" and its very light and by using a brush, I only use it under my eyes, corners and a bit on a few 'sun' spots. Looks very natural.
I then sometimes use the 'mineral veil' over that, he he. If I'm going out for a long time, to help 'set' it.

Badbird is 100% right; you must take the time at night to remove all the makeup and treat your skin. Makes all the difference how your skin will be in the am.
Hope this helps a bit, Vanessa Smile

I'm glad I can find people who relate to how I feel about makeup too!

Being in my late teens, I was never one to experiement with foundations and other types of makeup. Asian eyes were never easy to put makeup on!

I could never find a right shade (at a decent price) because I have quite olive undertones - dark even for normal Asian skin.

And I never liked the feel or finish of cheap make ups like Avon (the first brand I experiemented with).

The only coverage I ever used regularly at one stage was a mineral powder (by a now deleted Australian company called Red Earth).

I hated seeing girls at school with thick foundation that ended in a mask-line around the edge of their face!! I mean, couldnt they notice??

I want to improve my skin to the point where, I'd only really need to use a mineral powder on a sunny or hot day to soak up extra oil and persperation.

I don't think most people try to improve their skin condition enough, but rather spend more time and money on covering skin problems which only get worse as time goes on....

I too have given up on foundation. My skin is maturing but still relatively oily - perhaps has matured is more accurate - and I find that foundation does not make it look better. I have tried many, many brands. The only one that I sometimes use during colder months and for a blazing hot date is MAC Studiofix.

I use concealer every day, some blush and I think I look much better and my skin stays clearer. A good sunscreen is probably the best foundation.

In case some are wondering what happens to your foundation after several hours. It does not absorb into the skin. This is a myth. The molecules are just too big for it to be absorbed. And I agree with bad bird and others who say they wear foundation to protect skin against the environment, as long as it has an spf of 15-20, it would serve very well as a sunscreen product.

I don't wear foundation much at all anymore as I think as you get older foundation can add to your age.

Since I was in my teens I always wore foundation. Sunscreen was not used when I was growing up. Shock I believe the daily use of foundation saved my skin. I don't have any sun damage on my face.

I agree with Bad Bird that foundation must be removed daily with a good cleanser and toner.
