Hi,
I would like to know if buying from Ebay is safe? Has anyone experienced paying and not receiving the item?
How would I know if the seller is trustworthy? |

hey Bad Bird!!! The ordering-proces is really anoying and sometimes long, but it actually works well(up till my Henna order...I got brown, instead of black, and it didnt works at all...)javascript:emoticon('')
Very Happy But that changes with the seller ! And,well, its so cheap, that its really worth...(if there are no bidders you should make a bidding early, cause if they proffer the same price, you will get itjavascript:emoticon('')
Very Happy but if there are bidders for your product, you should make your bidding at the last moment..) You usually can whrite your seller an email,(if you have any questions). In addition they have an evaluation-profiel...
Sooo good luck!!! |

I've been a member of ebay for a few years now, and through experience the best thing to do is to check a persons feedback section. If they have a lot of positive feedback, i trust them. I had a woman who took almost a month to send something out to me...which i thought was rude. Just because someone has a few negative feedbacks doesn't necessarily mean they are a bad seller..i've had a lady leave a negative comment in my feedback because i left a neutral one saying she lacked description on an item (i took a risk of buying without seeing pictures:/) |

I have bought a lot off Ebay and never had a bad experience. As purpleturtle I am very careful to read feedback. If I ask the seller a question and they don't respond I won't purchase no matter how much I want the item. The few times I have bought skin care items I have asked if it is sealed and the exp. date. Must say I have received some awesome deals. |

I've bought a lot off eBay and have not had any problems. I had one parcel (local) go missing once but the seller was very nice and replaced it. I think the key is to make sure that you read the description and terms and conditions carefully and then also check the seller's feedback rating. |

I have bought loads off ebay and only had 2 bad experiences. My last purchase was the worst. My pa IL gave me 50 quid to buy my birthday pressie with, I bought a rick owens top and armani shoes of a german ebayer on may 5th and got them ....yesterday!
I had no response to my emails, nothing. I lodged a complaint with paypal after a month and was told they could only refund me €42 because that was all the seller had in her account, but they never actually gave it to me, but she finally posted the stuff out to me last thursday.
I'm happy I have the stuff, but the stress was huge and I'm not sure it was worth it.
Actually it was, because the top is the most gorgeous thing in the world!
Otherwise I buy everything off ebay, there are hardly any decent shops here, and I like the fact that you can get out of the ordinary clothes and stuff |

Hello, I use eBay regularly and have only had one bad experience. I paid using PayPal and the seller never sent my item. eBay were most helpful and got my money returned. My advice is always buy from someone with proven feedback and only use PayPal. |

Thanks, everyone. Can the seller himself post those feedback?
Sheila,
Was it a big hassle getting your money back from Paypal? |

the seller himself can post feedback if he bought his own items. (as feedback can only be posted with a transaction)
its expensive to do coz listing cost $ and ebay takes a cut out of your final sales so most sellers won't do that
i've bought and sold on ebays for years
and i've met a few errant sellers.
never got my money back
mind you they had few hundred feedback and one day they decide to abscond with the money
paypal didn't want to refund me
so yeah stuck with money gone
still its rare for it to happen but not THAT rare. |

My husband has bought lots of sports memorabilia on E-Bay and never had a problem.
Me, I bought an item once, and never received it. The seller got very defensive and angry when I asked for a proof that she did send it. I decided to forget it and put that in my «learning experiences» file.
I just bid today on a Bracelet Buddy, hoping that I will have better luck. |

Hi I'd agree that you should check the seller's feedback first before buying. I have bought loads of stuff on ebay before, never really had a bad experience except sometimes the item gets cracked/split due to postal handling.
There's one thing I ought to say about ebay though - sometimes people sell expired products there and some people do buy it - so make sure you read the description correctly and when in doubt, email the seller. Also there are sellers who sell a smaller version of something but put up a full size picture on their auction - so don't get burnt that way. Double check everything before you place your bid or make your purchase.
Another thing I find most helpful is to opt for insurance when you pay - either the seller will help you get your money back or you'll have to file the claim yourself. Either ways, I think it's pretty safe that way!
Last resort? Report your item & seller to ebay and Paypal if you've paid with your Paypal account. HOpe this helps! |

I've bought only cds off ebay, and they have arrived fine (and I'm not in the US anway)
But have been waiting for the last cd of mine for almost a month now!
But for small purchases, ebay or paypal can refund the money to you once you lodge a complaint. So at least you are covered for up to $1k. |

I had my first foray into ebay last week. I bought some Dr. H stuff from the ebayer listed in the other ebay thread, mraguirre. I figured they were a safe bet since so many people had bought from them without a problem. I got my stuff withen three days of paying. I have to say, I can feel myself getting addicted to ebay....by the way, she just listed bunches of good samples. |

over the years i bought several items on e-bay.
most transactions were fine. few sellers went above and beyond and 2 were horrible.
1 seller with many positve feedbacks, decided that he did not like his own conditions of sale and refused to take a credit card payment.
he became so nasty that he made his friends leave negative feedbacks even though we never ever bid on anything they sold. e-bay changed their settings since.
another seller advertised a new fryer/steamer and sent us an old and brokern one. when he contacted him, he promised to send a refund.
we payed for shipment back to his house, but then he stopped responding and never sent us our money.
but the worst in this case was paypal. e-bay refused to help as more than 30 days passed and paypal made us provide e-mails, phone records, bank statements. at the end paypal cancelled our account with any explanation.
we think that was because our bank stood behind us and because the seller disappeared, leaving paypal with a bill. is it any wonder that paypal lost a huge class action suite?
but the best was a seller who, by mistake sent an item (dior lipstick) that was tested. when we e-mailed her, she not only sent another beautiful new lipstick, but payed postage AND sent us full refund.
it is good, honest people like this that make us go back to e-bay. |

i've received a strange e-mail and knowing that it was a hoax, contacted e-bay.
here is their response:
----------------------------------------------
Hello,
Thank you for writing to eBay.
As you may have already suspected, this email did not originate from
eBay. These emails are commonly referred to as "spoofs" and are sent in
an attempt to collect sensitive personal information. We have reported
this email to the appropriate authorities as eBay has no control over
Web pages located outside of our site.
In the future, we ask you to be very cautious of any email that requests
you to submit information such as your credit card number or any

has been collected and you may continue to receive spoofed emails to
your email address.
If you have any doubt about whether an email message is from eBay,
please forward it to spoof@ebay.com. Do not respond to it or click on
any of the links in the email message. In addition, for faster
processing we ask that you do not change the subject line or the text of
the suspicious email in any way.
If you believe that you may have already given your sensitive

protect your identity. We have an eBay Help page with valuable
information regarding the steps you should take to protect yourself
further.

One sure fire way to tell if an email is from eBay or a thief, eBay will address you by full name not your id name. Also, you can always forward it to them, they will tell you if it's legit or not.
I buy and sell, I buy a lot. I have had over 700 transactions since June 2001 with numerous ids. I would say with clothing the success rate is about 75%. Sometimes there's a stain that wasn't mentioned or it's a little more worn than the seller let on. With cosmetics, I've had a great success rate. I only buy from established sellers who are selling new products. The one time I had some trouble was with some gwp sample products I got a heck of a deal on, the whole works would have retailed for 95% more than I paid, with shipping! But, a couple things had been opened previously and I'm sure one had been used! Ewwww! The feedback rating on the seller was not good, about 98.5% and their responses to neg feedback was immature and rude. I bought against my better judgement that time.
A few rules I have are:
Never buy from someone with less than 98% feedback, but I'm even leaning toward 99% right now. It does depend on the comments left and how the seller has responded.
Always read the description carefully and ask before bidding for expiry dates, measurements and especially shipping costs if not listed already. I've been dinged quite a few times on shipping. I don't hold it against the seller though because I didn't ask first.
Don't get into bidding wars, always use a sniping service or snipe manually. Sniping is when you bid the highest you will pay very late (ideally under a minute left if your isp is fast enough) in the auction. This is the service I use and there should be a good explanation of sniping there www.esnipe.com
I can't honestly say I love eBay, couldn't live without it! |

Just when my husband thought it was safe to come into the office, I found Ebay!! Yep, I am pretty much hooked.
It took a few learning steps to begin with. I learnt to ask the seller ANY questions you have about the item. I look at shoes and clothes mostly so ask for ALL measurements available.
Its also a great medium to clear out anything you don't use anymore.
Yep, love it.. maybe a bit too much. |

I love Ebay, and have only ever had one problem where the good wasn't received and the seller vanished. (they had good feedback too) I'm going to make a claim on it as the seller won't answer any of my emails. I've not had a problem with anyone else and most of the goods have come from overseas in great condition and in good time. |

Just pay attention to the seller's feedback and you are likely to have a smooth transaction. Really, the worst thing I've had happen was the seller taking too long to ship the product I purchased; but really, this is not the norm. You will have fun, Bad Bird! (I know this is an old thread. lol) |
