I am 38 years old & have suffered with Acne since I was in my teens. My plight is a hereditory one, but i am struggling to find a good acne product that really works. I have tried Accutane, but it was too strong for my skin as I also have some excema as well. I have tried Proactive, and find it helped moderately and also Neostrata.

Help. I was thinking of the MD formulations line. Has anyone had success.

Hi lisa m - I don't have a lot of experience with acne treatments -- and I'm sure others on the forum will chime in -- but MD Forte (manufactured by Allergan, maker of Botox) makes some good products that may help with this. I've used their 20% glycolic acid cream as well as Skin Rejuvenation Lotion II (contains AHA and a retinoid) in the past when I developed a spell of adult acne (probably due to hormonal flux). These two products aren't even classified among their acne treatments (rather, considered more anti-aging), yet they cleared up my skin and refined its texture. I still use them once in a while if my skin breaks out. I believe there's a Skin Rejuvenation Lotion III now (probably has a higher percentage of AHA). There are several items in this line specifically for acne. All I can say is I vouch for the quality of MD Forte products I've used.

I don't know what the active ingredients are in Proactive and Neostrata, but I imagine they contain some sort of acid. I needed something mild -- I can't tolerate Retin-A or Renova (Differin is a milder, Vit.A derivative RX acne gel that may help) or salicylic acid, BHA, benzol peroxide and the like. Since you also suffer from excema, maybe you should try a milder product as well. Sometimes less is more.

Hi Lisa,

I've had success with MD Formulations products but I don't have severe ongoing acne so I don't know if that helps you or not. I just have some occasional breakouts and also bumps under the skin (congestion). MDF seems to clear it right up. I get the same response with PCA Skin products that I have tried and also have tried some very good natural products (like YonKa Juvenil for example). My skin is pretty responsive to anti-acne products though - the only thing that does not work for me is anything that is mainly based on benzoyl peroxide.

I just started the hydrating glycolic gel from peter thomas roth. I've noticed a reduction in pimples and no harsh side effects. They also have the clarifying glycolic gel that has salicylic acid in it to help with pimples. I'm super sensitive to that so I just got the hydrating.

Glycolic is good for exfoliating so it's great for anit-aging and clogged pores.

My skin is quite sensitive and the 10% gel hasn't caused any dryness or rashes. I plan to pick up the md formulations cleanser with the 12% glycolic soon as the PTR only has 3% glycolic cleanser.

April suggested I try the glycolic and I'm glad I did. I chose the PTR because it's easily available in my area. Can't find MD Forte anywhere in Canada.

I have read some really good testimonials on the MD forte line, but it is not commercially available in canada. I did find it on skinstore.com and I am ordering it from the USA. Would be nice if someone would carry this line in canada. I have heard it is excellent for problem skin with a rating of 5 out of 5.

hi there,

I sell Epidermx and Epiderm products and one of my clients is around your age? maybe older. I know her from the gym we both workout at, she tried many products, Retin A, Proactiv etc. and finally uses the Epidermx, tea tree/porcelain bar and Derma butter. Her face never looked better! I thought it was me, one day I said to her is it me? or has your face really improved, and she told me that nothing else worked for her.

Not that being said there is a gal infront of me using Proactiv and seems happy with it.

Something different works for everyone, and sometimes you need to try different things out, unfortunately. Good Luck! Smile

lisa m - I recently noticed that eBay has some MD Forte items listed. You may want to check it out. Some of the sellers ship worldwide (skincare_101 for example).
