It is a holiday weekend in North America. Friday, July 1st is Canada Day, and Monday is Independance Day for my neighbours across the border. We at EDS will be closed tomorrow.
In honor of Canada Day, I have decided to throw a pop-quiz, and I will issue two discount vouchers to winners. There will be ten questions to answer. The first person who answers FIVE of these questions correctly, will receive a discount voucher. The first person who answers at least eight of the ten questions correctly, will win the other voucher (for a bigger discount).
I will not make these easy, and it will require knowledge, and possibly a bit of investigating on the `net. The questions will consist of common knowledge, current events, geography, skincare, and more!
Good luck to all! I will award the winners tomorrow night, as well as reveal the answers to the questions! Have a happy & safe holiday weekend!
Questions
1. There are three Canadian skincare brands sold on the EDS website. Name ALL three.
2. Name two Canadian cosmetic/make-up companies.
3. Is M.A.C a Canadian company?
4. Three Canadian supermodels?
5. What are the three biggest cities in Canada?
6. Name all ten provinces and all three territories in Canada. ALL of them!
7. At least five Canadian actors. Name them.
8. Where will the 2010 Winter Olympics be held in Canada, and when was the last place & time that the Olympics were held in this country?
9. Canada's government made international news this week? What was the reason? (hint: think rainbows)
10. Who is the present leader of Canada, and name the five previous leaders. (hint: one was a woman from B.C.)

I am so impressed with all of the enteries ! You're all doing pretty well. Stay-tuned for all of the correct answers, coming up later tonight. It is becoming a close race, I assure you.
I have decided to up the ante! I am adding some extra Canuck brain-teasing trivia. Am I a sadist? No. Trivia is good. We learn things, keep our minds active, and it's challenging. Consider these questions as bonus points for your previous answers!

3. True or false: Canada is a member of the British Commonwealth?

Age of majority is something different, see http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/canadaeuropa/france/canadaaz/agemajorite-en.asp for that info |

I was confused by question 10 too as most of the websites I checked listed a few provinces having a lower age of majority (hence my listing more than two provinces). |

Toe, Age of majority [when you become an adult (get rights and responsibilities) in the eyes of the law] and legal drinking age are two separate things...I am pretty sure CM was asking for the drinking age.
I'm sure she'll clear it up |

Yes, I will clear that up (and answer that question). I was asking for the drinking age! In Canada, the legal drinking age is 19, with the exception of Alberta & Quebec, which is 18 years of age. It used to be 21, nationally, a long time ago. Example: my father was a police officer at nineteen. He was too young to go into bars legally, to arrest anyone at the time. LOL!
The age of majority is when a person reaches 18. They may vote, and make legal decisions as an adult in Canada. |

3. Is M.A.C a Canadian company? Not anymore It was created in Canada, but the company was sold to Estee Lauder in 1997. The products are still produced in Canada. The company has become more coporate & available internationally. (I preferred it before Lauder.)

5. What are the three biggest cities in Canada? Toronto,Montreal, and Vancouver.
6. Name all ten provinces and all three territories in Canada. ALL of them!
Provinces:(west-east) British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland/Labrador. Territories: Yukon, Northwest Territories, and (the newest) Nunavut.

The legalization of Gay Marriage. Canada is the third country in the World, after The Netherlands & Belgium to do so. Spain followed-suit later this week.

Bonus Question Answers
1. What is the national capital of Canada?
Ottawa, Ontario
2. What are the capital cities of each province & territory of Canada? All thirteen of them.
Yukon Territory - Whitehorse
Northwest Territories - Yellowknife
Nunavut - Iqaluit
Ontario - Toronto
Quebec - Quebec City
Nova Scotia - Halifax
New Brunswick - Fredericton
Manitoba - Winnipeg
British Columbia - Victoria
Prince Edward Island - Charlottetown
Saskatchewan - Regina
Alberta - Edmonton
Newfoundland & Labrador - St Johns
3. True or false: Canada is a member of the British Commonwealth?
True. This is why Queen Elizabeth II is featured on the back of all of our coins.
4. For you shopping mavens: what are the names of two national, Canadian department store chains? The Hudsons Bay Company (owns Zellers) and Holt Renfrew. Eatons went bankrupt in the late 90's, was bought by Sears Canada.
5. Canadian currency: we have a one-dollar coin and a two-dollar coin. What are their wacky nicknames?
$1: "loonie" because it has a Loon (waterfowl) on the face.
$2: "toonie" no bird, but it rhymed with "loonie", so I guess this is where it got it's name when it launched in 1996.
6. What are the two official languages of Canada?
English & French. This is why all packaging on purchased items is in both English & French. It is the law. New Brunswick, Quebec, northeast Ontario, and parts of Manitoba have the largest French-speaking or bilingual populations.
7. When did Canada officially launch the Metric system of measurement?
1970. This is when Canada started using Metric. However, most of us still use imperial measurements, when quoting our weight, height, etc.
8. Actor Keifer Sutherland's grandfather was nationally famous for something. What was the man's name, and why is he renowned in Canada?
The late Saskatchewan premier, Tommy Douglas, was was known as the father of Canada's government funded medical system.
9. What are: a "two-four weekend", a "double-double", "Newfies", "First Nations", and "pop"?
"Two-four Weekend" is the May long weekend (Victoria Day). A "two-four" is a case of beer in Ontario, containing 24 bottles/cans. (I can't remember if they're sold like this elsewhere; only in 12 or 18's here!). People imply the term "2-4 weekend" as the long weekend when they'll be swigging back a "2-4" of beer.
"Double-Double" is the way some people order their coffee at Canadian donut/coffee shop, Tim Hortons. Double cream, double sugar. Tim Hortons is no longer a Canadian owned company. It was sold to U.S. company Wendy's, many years ago ... for only a million dollars. Tim Horton's widow is probably kicking herself over that financial "oopsie"!
"Newfies" is a nickname for those who live in the province of Newfoundland AND for the breed of dogs known as Newfoundlanders. This is pronounced "new-fun-land", NOT "new-found-land".
"First Nations" is the Canadian, politically-correct title given to aboriginals/native indian Canadians. (except Metis & Inuit).
"Pop" is what we call soft drinks/soda/fizzy drinks.
10. When does a person reach the age of majority in Canada? What two provinces have a lower age of majority?
Drinking age: 19, except in Alberta, Manitoba, and Quebec, which is 18. it used to 21 nationally, many years ago.
Age of majority: at 18, you are considered an adult, can vote, etc.
Sixteen is the legal age to get a learner's permit/* spam * in Canada. 15 in Alberta. The B.C. government now has graduated licensing for new drivers (thank God!) where restrictions are placed on new drivers.[/u] |
