Hi... this may seem a funny question, how much sunscreen should i apply to my face? and also can i massage it until it is fully absorbed into my skin or do i have to look like a grease ball? |

You need about 1/4 tsp for your face and another 1/4 for your neck. Measure it out and you'll be surprised. You'll need 1/2 tsp for each arm and 1 tsp for each leg.
I've found it is best to put on one layer, let it sink in and then add another layer. |

Really? That much? Wouldn't you go through a 4 ounce bottle in a matter of a few days at that rate? |

So one family of four and one 8 ounce bottle equals two days of vacation with no reapps!!!!
And if you get the cheapest 5.99 bottle and go to the pool regularly during the summer....I hate to even do the calculation! |

I actually heard that it's a little bit more than that for the face but that's what the derms in Australia say. This is why a foundation with say SPF15 does not really give you SPF15 - you'd never put enough foundation on your face to give you the SPF15. |

This greasy teaspoon dollop theory is certainly the orthodox one, but dare I say it's not what I do. I couldn't do that on a daily basis and I am trying now to do the sunscreen thing every day religiously for six weeks to see if people are right about how much it improves the skin.
I know these are reliable sources, but I really wonder about who gave this advice originally, from what research and most importantly how long ago it was because it seems to just echo from site to site for years on end and never changes. Haven't sunscreens changed over the years and become more effective (in Europe at least)?
I myself (don't shoot me down!) rely on a light film of sunscreen (you can just about see it but it's a light sheen rather than a layer of grease) for ordinary days and a bit thicker for difficult conditions. I even mop up a bit after I've left it to soak in if it's too thick. Works for me - never burn, hardly ever tan if I do it this way. I know the orthodox advice is against mopping so don't tell me.
BB advises dusting with cornstarch, but for a UK man I'm not sure how appropriate that is.
Maybe you should try one of these, designed for men, clear sunscreens I've seen in Boots lately.

UK man, theoretically speaking I don't know. I suspect anyone in the know would say by rubbing it right in you would be making it less effective.
I don't think it's even possible to rub it right in, there's bound to be some left on the surface. Why not just try it and see what the results are after a few days. If you're outside a bit and it's still working you shouldn't tan and whatever tan you had before should fade. My skin's evening out quite a bit from wearing sunscreen every day. Just go on what your skin tells you. |
