Hello All-two months ago I developed a brown freckle on my lip--went to dermatologist, he said it was sun-induced freckle and for $100 he could zap it w/ a laser, which he did--but he advised me to wear lip balm w/ sunscreen, which I did--but it must not have been the right type, 'cause the freckle is back!

So, I've been reading the posts on sunblocks, and understand that only certain ingredients are okay--but the problem is, titanium and zinc leave a white film on my lips, and I can't find a meroxyl lip screen?

Anyone else have this problem?

Btw, I use a 30spf sunscreen w/ titanium--that's photostable, right?

Hi Fortyplusforbeauty,

There is a mexoryl lip screen by La Roche Posay. If you're in the US, you'd have to buy it off the 'Net from Europe though. Smile

I've got a really nice Dr Hauchka sunscreen stick for lips that is an SPF30. It's based on Titanium Dioxide and it does look a bit whitish on the lips. If you wear lipstick or lipgloss though it doesn't matter and it makes a great (slightly moisturising) base. If you don't wear a lippy then I wouldn't recommend it. I haven't tried any others that weren't whiteish apart from something like Carmex or Blistex.

ETA: Did it pop up in extactly the same place? I'd get it checked out by a Dr again if I were you... just in case.

Just ordered the mexoryl lipscreen from La Roche, thanks Bad Bird.

Yes, it showed up in the exact same place, but the derm said 1) it wasn't cancerous or pre-cancerous and 2) was likely to remanifest unless I wore sunscreen on my lips.

Which I did, but not the type with the physical blocks (titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, mexoryl, avenbenzone w/ the right photostabilizing ingredient).

Right now I wear a 30 spf w/ Titanium Dioxide. If I slather on enuf, is that sufficient protection? I'm a bit confused as to whether mexoryl is preferable because it feels better, and/or because it's a better block of UVA rays.

MAC Tinted Lip Conditioners have SPF (can’t remember if it’s SPF15 or SPF30, sorry) and even though the sunscreen is titanium dioxide, I have found that they do *not* leave a white-ish cast to the lips.

They come in several colors, but while the shades look garish and scary in the jar, the color on the lips is actually very sheer and subtle. I think MAC also has a plain, untinted Lip Conditioner, but I haven’t used that one so can’t comment on whether it leaves a white cast. The MAC TLC’s are $15 per jar, but it’s a huge container that would probably take years to finish off.

If you’re not sure if you want to commit before trying one, there is a seller on Ebay that offers little sample containers of the TLC’s in every color, if you’d like to try before you buy. Also, if you don’t like “potted” lip balm (because it’s unsanitary to stick your finger in the jar to apply), MAC is now offering the TLCs in stick-form, like Chapstick or lipstick.

Oh cool! I almost bought one of these a few months back but didn't in the end because it came in a pot. I'll have to re-investigate this in stick form Smile Thanks Carrie!
