My eight month old Maggie is in the hospital. She has been diagnosed with Advanced Elbow Dysplasia with arthritis. For a month she has been limping on and off. She has been to the vet weekly. Up until now he thought she just had puppy growing pains (PANO) or caught her claw in the deck.
Maggie was operated on today with a guarded outcome to the surgery. The specialist agrees that Maggie condition might be genetic or as a young pup she put too much stress on a joint that was weak. I feel that she is in the best of care with an orthopedic specialist.
Now you know why I have not been posting much at all. Skin care seems so unimportant to me now. I am heart sick that such a baby has this condition. Maggie is my 4th Scottie. I have loved them all but Maggie is the most affectionate.
I can visit Maggie tomorrow and she will come home Monday. The recovery for her surgery is 6 weeks.
Please say a prayer for my wee one.

Hi Winnie
Sorry to hear about your Maggie's health problems. I can understand how you feel, I had a beloved dog who had several surgeries and I was a wreck each time. You and Maggie have my prayers.
God bless,

Winnie,
Have you contacted the breeder you got her from? They should be told about the problem and that it's possibly genetic so they can modify their breeding program..
I'm sorry to hear she's sick. It's always stressful when our babies aren't 100%

Sorry to hear about Maggie.
It's terrible to see our pets go through this sort of thing. It's made all the more difficult because we can't explain to them and make them understand that it is the best thing for them and that we have to do these things in order to make them well again.
I'm sure you will shower her with all the love and care she could ever need post-op and let's hope it's a speedy recovery. |

Casper is sitting in my lap right now, purring, and I have just told her of Maggie's surgery. Casper says, "Cats purr, and it helps us relax & heal." Therefore, she is sending some loud purrs to New England, and wishes that she could share some fishy treats with Maggie during the recovery. "Hey!" she says, "We could both shed white fur, all over your house! What fun!!" |

AW, dang it Winnie. I hate hearing the news about Maggie.
I hate when our furry kids are not 100% themselves - and I know they want to be for their humans.
I hope she gets better soon. I'll keep her in my pet prayers!

I visited with Maggie today for two hours. We just layed around and I rubbed her belly. She is eating well. The staff at the hospital are giving her A++++ care. Tomorrow I bring her home. The fun begins. She needs six weeks to totally heal. That means no extensive activity and jumping on people or funiture. Now, can you see this with an 8 month old puppy?
The surgeon was pleased with the surgery. Post op radiographs looked much better then the pre op. Maggie should be more comfortable and her gait should be better after healing. The outcome is still guarded but I am thinking positive thoughts for little Maggie.
I am looking into suppliments for the arthritis that has set in. Some say glucosaminem is excellent. I am looking at a product http://www.easysource.com/synflex/syn_pets.htm?id=
Have any of you had any experience with these ingredients for arthritis. Maggie has her age and size in her favor. If she was a large dog she would have much more stress on her leg. I also have to keep her weight down. Now I have to keep my grandchildren from feeding my dogs.
Tonight we went out for ice cream and little Jack kept sharing his cone with Winnie.
Wish me luck for six week keeping her down. |

Dear Winnie and Maggie,
Hope you are both feeling better! My OH's family dog (a red heeler) got arthritis at the age of 8, and was struggling to run or walk (it was awful as she was such an active dog before hand and then she was just hobbling around). After a few week on the glycosamine, she was moving again - in the middle of winter, and soon a VERY dramatic improvement and so profound at the time that her parents decided to take the stuff (in tablet form of course) for their arthritis also . It's now over a year later and "dusty" is doing well still (although its winter again and she's getting older and moving less).
They buy it in powder form and mix it in with her food, or pour it over her biscuits - she doesnt seem to mind eating it at all (although I am not sure if she is a fussy eater).
In any case, this stuff worked miracles for dusty (a much older dog also) and I hope it does the same and more for maggie - in the prime of her life!
Wishing you the best.... |

Dearest Winnie-
Take care of yourself and Maggie and I hope she is feeling better soon. Best wishes during the 'recovery' period. I hope the six weeks goes fast and she is back to her normal, bouncy self!

Winnie - I've just started my dog on Sasha's Blend and also some additional glucosamine supplements. My dog is old and this winter he is definitely struggling - we went through a few weeks where he would run away from me if I wanted to pick him up. I had no idea why until I found out he's got arthritis and the poor little fella was in pain. I've been mixing in the powder with his food and I see an improvement after a few days. What you want to be looking for in a formula with glucosamine as well as chondroitin. Sasha's Blend, while having the glucosamine and chondroitin as well, also has additional ingredients that are natural anti-inflammatories.
I would suggest you look into Syn-Flex. This is the supplement I orginally wanted to get for my dog but I couldn't find it in Australia.... |

Winnie, I'm so glad the surgery went well! I've heard good things about glucosamine but have no firsthand experience. Wishing you good luck in keeping her relatively inactive while she heals. My dog had severe arthritis which greatly reduced her mobility but (as I posted in another thread) she insisted even then on giving me her frenetic "welcome home" routine. When I wanted her to calm down I played Strauss waltzes. That seemed to relax her a lot, in fact she would doze off before the end of the CD. Humming while gently massaging her head and softly stroking her body had the same effect. I also kept the place relatively quiet, no sudden/loud sounds. Oh, and lots of cozy baby comforters strewn about to encourage napping. |

That's great she's doing so well, Winnie. She is lucky to have you, but I'm sure you feel just as lucky to have her. Take care, Annette |

Winnie, Maggie looks just like my favorite childhood toy (until Teddy came along) -- she was a white Scottie I called Puppy, and I couldn't live without her!
Glad to hear the surgery went well
Good luck to both of you! |

You are all so dear. Thank you so much for good thoughts and prayers for Maggie.
I took Maggie home today. Now, I have to obey the surgeons orders perfectly. The healing time is more then I ever though. For two weeks she needs total rest and only can go out on a lead to potty.
For 12 weeks she cannot run, jump or play rough.
Right now Maggie is a brave little pup and wants to hop around on three legs. As the pain subsides it is going to be really tough keeping an 8 month old puppy down.
Any suggestions??? I need all the help I can get. What would I ever do if I were working? I should be working to pay for this enormous cost. $3,000.00 Maggie deserves me giving up skin care for a very long time. Would rather have wrinkles then not have my wee one.
Again, thank you so much for all the support you have given me. What a great group of people.
Lianne: I did contact the breeder and have had no reply. Very odd because they contacted me all the time (email) when Maggie was well. Unfortunately, I have no recourse. Even though it most likely is genetic it could have been caused by a slight injury i.e.: jumping off sofa when Maggie was younger. Maggie's warranty only covers if she has to be euthanized by age of two.
Winnie
PS: Casper keep purring |
