Do any rosaceans have a solution for successfully exfoliating? I have papules/pustules and the usual redness. My skin has lots of small hard white bumps--not whiteheads. I feel my skin needs exfoliating, but am afraid to be too experimental.
Has anyone used the aspirin mask with rosacea?
Thanks very much for your help. |

hi
I was diagnosed with rosacea..i went through a series of IPL treatments..and my skin still is very delicate so exfoliating isnt as easy as it is for other people. First, no towels or anything..anything with crystals or rough surfaces i dont put on my skin. If i need to get dead skin off i wait until my skin is very calm...it naturally sheds itself, but i also moisturize daily so if it needs to come off it sort of does it itself, or if i have random dry spots..it might sound weird, but ill gently wet a q-tip and exfoliate it. I'm really anal about anything rubbing harshly on my skin though. Hopefully someone else can put their 2 cents in. |

I usually exfoliate with Dermalogica Microexfoliant. It's in a powder form and you can try to massage it gently on your face. Do it twice a week or something...depending on how your skin can tolerate it. Btw, purpleturtle, do you find the IPL treatment useful in dealing with the redness on the face? I did IPL a few times but I don't seem to see any improvement at all. Anyway, waiting for your reply. Thanks! |

| the people i went to were a bit weird. It took me like...8 treatments before i saw a big difference...and i told them i wasnt please so i had about 15 altogether. Thats a lot...and my face still isnt as clear as i'd like it to be. I'm a lot less red than i was before..but i plan to go to a different guy thats a qualified dermotologist..he has a laser there that he said was better than IPL and would give dramatic results without so many treatments . I forgot the name of the procedure..hmph. |

| I've had 2 treatments so far and so has my husband as we both have rosacea (the IPL called photfacial). Not a lot of improvement but some better. Our med/spa said it takes at least 5 for maximum results, so 15 seems very excessive w/o strong results. I think I would switch also. I use Cetaphil to wash, then Dr H CC for exfoliation, followed by IS CLinical proheal and hydra cool and my rosacea has calmed way down to non-existent. My husband uses the IS clinical for his too and loves the results. You might try some samples to see if it helps. |

cetaphil gentle cleanser is amazing..and it helps get the dead skin off as well. 5 treatments do not give maximum results. My sister got treatments with me and neither of us were happy with just 5. I hope i see this dermotologist guy soon so i can see how this other laser works..then i can tell you how it works...its a lot cheaper too! |

I had very good luck with IPL (aura & lyra lasers) treating my rosacea. Now I use scrubs very gently around my chin and nose, more aggressively at the sides of my face.
An aspirin mask is amazing for exfoliating and calming down redness! |

Purpleturtle you had 15 treatments?!? That must have cost a lot!! The doctor that I went to, he said I need about 6 treatments to see results. I did 3-4 treatments and I don't see anything at all. I'm just wondering if this kinda laser stuff has any side effects or not long term?
So what's this aspirin mask that everyone's talking about? |

| yeah..the dermotologist i plan to see soon warned me that IPL doesnt work. i remember his words "It takes several to even see a small difference." It cost 1,000 for me to get the amount i got...the deal was 7 but the guy was weird and thought i was "beautiful" and wanted to make me "perfect." what a creep. He would massage my back for me and and tried getting me to take my shirt off so he could give better massages. What a perv. So this time forget spa people..im going to a profession. it'll be cheaper..and i wont feel creeped out. |

| Also, the side effects to ipl is that you need to wear very good sun protection. It can make you photosensitive..Also, if you are prone to freckles they suggest you aren't on birth control as it can make you more prone to freckles.. |

| One more question about the aspirin mask. It really calms redness from rosacea? I always thought it might be irritating. How exactly do you make it and how long do you leave it on your face? I certainly want to give it a try if it can help. Thanks =) |

I am not sure if I have rosacea or not, but my doc diagnosed me wiht a mild case.
But I find that if I wake up, my face is quite calm, but it just goes red during the day, beginning from washing and putting on face stuff, then walking in the wind, then sun.. and then having a shower.. Just makes it worse
Do you guys have the same sort of problem? |

suggestions if you wake up and your face is calm...then red all of sudden with washing and face products...the products you are using might not be rosacea friendly. Try using a cleanser and makeup with the most least irritating ingredients you can find. Most people with rosacea get dry skin with some oiliness...so get a cleanser that gives moisture but doesnt make your skin overproduce oil (many cleansers for oily skin just overly dries skin, then causes oily areas in your body thinks it needs oil so it produces too much..). I use mineral makeup..and it doesnt irritate. As for the sun, i wear sunscreen and a hat. No more red cheeks because of that. And i take cool/luke warm showers, and make them rather brief. Too much steam worsens rosacea over time and it also dries the skin out a lot:/
But a nice long hot shower doesnt hurt from time to time...life is too short to give up the good stuff:) |

Purpleturtle
I think I am using pretty non-irritant stuff at the moment. I feel more comfortable using natural cleansers rather than normal ones, as it doesn't strip the skin. I use an oil-based cleanser in the morning, which helps with oil. And non-foaming cleanser at night. I also use MMU and that is very good for covering the red to a certain extent.
I just don't know if I should be using some sort of antibacterial product on my face for it. |

im not sure how natural cleansers really cleanse the face...im not sure i would feel completely clean. And that is very important for any kind of skin...I use cetaphil gentle cleanser and its the absolute only cleanser that has ever worked successfully on my skin. I check ingredients for some of the natural cleansers, and ive seen many irritants (natural doesn't necessarily mean anti-irritant) in them. It's definitely a difficult task to find something very pure.
As long as nothing turns red after you put it on, it might just be your skin reacting to the environment around you? Some things you just cant control |

What MMU do you guys use? I can't seem to cover the red and get the MMU to last more than a couple hours. I also have oily break through after a couple hours. I have been using Iredale pressed, Pure Lux, Alima, Aromaleigh--old formulas--I haven't tried the new formulations. I finally went back to EL Double Wear due to the fact that it lasts and covers pretty well. But I do worry about using conventional foundation again. I wish I could get the MMU to work. I have tried spritzing, blending, applying light layers, blending some more.
As for the red appearing throughout the day, I get that too. I just recently switched over to Cetaphil soap and a gentle moisturizer to see if I could calm my skin down and also see if my other products have been irritating me. |

I use aromaleigh. I use it because it is non bismuth, and i could custom blend a shade that suited me. I allow my natural skin to show through...so there is slight pink to some areas of my skin, where reddness shows. I dont have problems with reddness on my forehead or chin..My nose is probably the pinkest..but it covers lovely. I dont like conventional foundations. I never realized how much my skin was reacting to them..the breakouts...going in the sun and coming out looking like a lobster. Lots of skin reactions..and im sure chemical foundation wasn't doing anything to help..yargh.
I use cetaphil lotion early in the day after using chamomile tea bags on my skin...then i use the gentle cleanser at night followed by cetaphil cream. I tried the soap and didn't find it much different from other soaps. I dont even really use soap on my body anymore (i read it dries the skin too much), except for areas where its really important. |

Thanks Purpleturtle for your info. Btw, what kinda spa has men working in it? That man is a pervert then!! Well from what you're saying, that means IPL doesn't really work that well. It takes so many treatments to see just a bit of result. Then why do doctors and dermatologists make a big deal over it? Anyway, for the makeup questions, it seems that mineral foundation is good for sensitive skin and in covering the redness. But whenever I put foundation on my face, it appears cakey and uneven. I did exfoliate the night before btw. It just doesn't seem to cover naturally!! Will a primer do the job? Anyway, any suggestions is appreciated. Thanks! |

Gemlover -
I was in the same boat as you with the oily breakthroughs. I used Pureluxe, as it was my first MMU experience, I thought it was great but obviously the red especially around my cheeks still showed through slightly especially as the day wore on. And my face would feel and look shiny later in the day too.
I started playing around with mixing colours with MMU, and I added A LOT of yellow (banana split) to their regular shades, because of my skin tone, but it covered the redness so much better afterwards. If green isn't working, try a yellow base then apply regular colour. (There was a post about yellow undertones being better than green for redness).
Today I tried to dust some kaolin clay powder with a regular white makeup base (trans matt by Pureluxe) and then applied my regular coloured MMU. I did not blot all day, from 7am til 6pm... I used to blot still 3-4 times a day with just MMU.
The kaolin doesnt create any unnatural glow or hue on the skin, esp if it is under your foundation.

| A 2% salicylic acid formulation could work well. Paula's Choice sells a well-formulated product that is quite gentle on the skin. |

I have very sensitive skin and like to use mild scrubs with very small exfoliating particles like Valmont Exfoliate or Chanel Exfoliating Mousse. Nothing abrasive like Dermatologica Microfoliant which makes my skin sting! |
