Will non-ammonia hair color lighten my hair??
Clairol Herbal Essences has a new line out that says no-ammonia formula....or for the really light shades low-ammonia.
I want to lighten my golden blonde to a paler, creamy shade without drying it out further....any recommendations? |

I use Herbavita, which is no-ammonia. It uses hydrogen peroxide. I can't really recommend anything that won't dry your hair, since I found this to be drying. I condition a LOT which brings my hair back to normal, but it is definitely an extra chore and expense. |

I only use Aveda on my hair, which is no ammonia/peroxide/bleach. But here's the kicker: my hair is now lighter than it ever was using bleach! I can now attain the baby-blonde I love so much through full-head highlights, whereas before - even though I'm a natural blonde - it was impossible. Plus bleach caused my hair to fall out, and caused it to feel like straw at the roots. Now my hair is thicker than ever, thanks to Aveda, and I get no color fade or damage. I'll never go back! |

chimera: Where do you buy this product...health stores??? And would it drastically lighten my hair?
sugarfreesheila: Sounds good but I would have to go to a salon, right? Can't buy Aveda hair color in a store? How does it lighten if there is no peroxide or ammonia? |

I can answer the first part: Yes, you'd have to go to a salon for Aveda color! I, too, am waiting anxiously to find out how it can lighten without the harmful chemicals.... |

I purchased a product from a health food store called Nautrcolor (?sp) with only 3% peroxide....I will let you know how it works and how much it lightens. The makers claim it will lighten up to 2 shades, we shall see |

Herbavita is similar to Naturtint (I assume this is what you purchased), it is supposed to lighten your hair 2 shades. I used it a lot and my hair got even lighter. And, yes, it is purchased in a health food store. Good luck! |

I had my hightligts/trim appointment today and when I asked my colorist, I found that my information was incorrect. The Aveda lighteners do in fact contain peroxide - but not ammonia or bleach.
For those interested in making appointments with an Aveda salon in their area, here is a direct link to find one near you. Sorry for the misinformation!
