What is the best way to sterilize bottles? I'm thinking emersing it in boiling water for a period of time, but this will lead to cracking no? |

Hi Azalea,
I use my vegetable steamer to sterilize. I set glass bottles into the basket ... turn the steamer on for about 30 minutes ... and then don't think about it for several hours.
That's why the vegetable steamer is so good for me ... for a number of things. I also use the veggie steamer to hard boil eggs ... because I don't have to remember that the eggs are "boiling". Many is the time that I've put eggs in boiling water ... only to completely forget that I'm doing that ... and finding the pot full of eggs and no water!
So ... since the veggie steamer has a timer ... and once the timer has rung, the heat is turned off ... I can actually forget about whatever it is I have in there [eggs, bottles and jars to sterilize or even vegetables!] ... although if I'm actually cooking veggies in it, I tend not to forget.
At any rate ... I figure that amount of steam for 20 to 30 minutes is probably sufficient to sterilize things.
I can't recall how long I had to leave my son's baby bottles in the sterilizer ... but I believe it was about 10 minutes in boiling water.

it won't lead to cracking ... i have done that tons of time, both plastic and glass. No more than 10 minutes though. |

I don’t know if this actually does the trick or not – and it’s not like I’ve got to be certain they’re sterile for baby formula or anything, but I just run them thru the dishwasher. I figure the combination of the hot water and then the heated drying cycle must certainly kill at least a few bugs – have you ever grabbed a glass fresh from the dishwasher and nearly dropped it because it was so hot?? |
