after reading so much about cleansing with oils, i decided to try the conditioner-only method to wash my hair. i've been doing it for three days now and it's so great! it turns out just as clean as if i had shampooed AND conditioned. the only difference is that my hair is softer -- oh the horror! i haven't washed my hair today and it doesn't look greasy. probably because my scalp isn't producing oil to replace what the shampoo would've taken out. i'm going to keep it up for a couple more weeks and see just how my hair reacts.
-i have a normal hair type, not oily, not dry |

Oh, I am so tempted to try this but my scalp gets so itchy if I skip shampoo. Let us know how if it keeps up! |

I'm also really curious about this and would like to try it sometime. I'll be curious to find out is your hair feels weighed down after a few washings... Please keep up posted. Thanks! |

I've been CO washing for a couple of months now and my hair is sooooo much the better for it, plus my scallp isn't all itchy and flakey.
The secret is, is to massage your hair and scalp when it is dry for about 2-3 mins, then brush out tangles and then use a pure bristle brush. This helps distribute the oils from the scalp down the shaft.
Wet your hair in the hottest water you can bear and massage again for a couple of mins and then use conditioner like you would shampoo, massaging well. Rinse out and finish with ACV or just a blast of cold water.
Use a really light silicone free conditioner (cheaper the better! ) and don't forget to massage! |

I recommend Alberto Vo5 conditioners for this. Cheap and effective! |

I'll have to try this again. I tried it after reading it's what Jerry Hall did, I just ended up with dull funked up hair. |

I do this mostly because I need to wash everyday because I get major skin build-up on my scalp if I don't (psoriasis).
I've used a few kinds of conditioner to do this but had a hard time finding one without scent and silicones, because both irritate my very itchy scalp. The last month I've been using Cetaphil for sensitive skin on my hair and scalp and then every 5 or 6 days I use a regular shampoo. I wash my hair with Cetaphil a couple times, massage it in and rinse it really well. If you look at the ingredients they are very similar to a lot of conditioners but it is extremely light and has no silicones.
Here's the ingredients:
Water, Cetyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Stearyl Alcohol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben
I generally am trying to stay away from products with Sodium Lauryl Sulfate but in this amounnt, it's used as a emulsifier (holds it all together) and it's about 3% of the product so it's not supposed to be irritating and I certainly find it to be very gentle.
My scalp is much less itchy than with regular shampoo, pure relief for me. I'm loving it! I use a small amount of my regular conditioner on my ends after every wash. |

Yesterday I picked up Suave Naturals coconut scent for $1.78 CAD! I used it to conditioner wash my hair this morning and I love it!! I don't notice much residual scent so I'm going to pick up the strawberry one because it has no added protein. I'm pretty sure all the Suave Naturals conditioners are silicone free. Certain types of V05 are supposed to be good too (the fruity scents I believe, no silicones) but I couldn't find them here.
I like the Suave conditioner, it is thicker and has more slip than Cetaphil. I love that it doesn't build up on my hair and after a good scrubbing and rinse, my hair and scalp feel very clean. |

Oh, I forgot to add, I rinsed with a cup of water and two tablespoons of ACV afterward! |

trying the CO wash today, but would really like to put some coconut oil in the conditioner too but suspect that will make it heavy and in need of a wash? will let you know! |

I got a jar of coconut oil from the ethic food section at Basics Grocery store for $1.99. I like to use this as a pre-conditioner treatment. I am not sure how well it would work IN the conditioner. It is solid at room temperature and the heat from your hands melts it.
Some ladies add honey to their conditioner. |

I do a conditioner only wash. This is a product with no silicones. My hair does feel clean, but not heavy.
I also alternate with a modified version. I get my hair wet in the shower, then apply conditoner to the ends (from the ears down). I then wash with a sulfate-free shampoo. This helps protect my dry ends, but my removes all the styling products, etc.
I like Rusk Sensories shampoo and L'oreal Everpure. No sulfates.
The silicone cleansing conditioner is from Classy Minerals.
I also like Matrix Biolage treatment, Aura Cherry Almond (Sallys) and Yes to Cucumbers conditioner. Silicone free. |

thanks Autumn, the coconut did not really work in the conditioner, very soft but very greasy and a little tangled. As a pre shampoo treatment it is fab! I like the co wash idea you mentioned with conditioner on the ends, I will try that. Thank you! |

I am glad the coconut oil worked for you. I have read that people do use it as a body moisturizer after showering.
I really recommend the coconut oil for hair. |

I've stopped shampooing my hair on regular basis a long time ago. I noticed a huge differnce and the same with my hair stylist.
I just wet and condition and the next wash is shampoo & condition. Sometimes, I have to wash my hair daily, due to sweat or being in a smelly area...I use public transit since I live in the city. I shampoo at those times.
I think over washing is not a good thing, unless your skin really need it. |
