so i'd like to make my own vitamin c serum but i really don't want to us propylene glycol or glycerin in it, is there anything else i could use in place of these?
i'm concerned about what else propylene glycol is used for and not sure whether glycerine might make it too greasy for me - so here's the test, are there any (relatively easy to get) alternatives you skincare gurus?

Hi Kiwigirl,
There was a lively discussion about this just recently in EDS. If you use the "search" facility I'm sure you'll find it.
Basically, the problem is with the instability of l-ascorbic crystals.
You can mix it with just water ... but that will only last about 24 hours. With either glycerin or PG, it will last for a week.
If you mix the glycerin or PG half and half with water ... it's really not "greasy" ... and let's face it ... you're only using a few drops per application.
Other than these I don't know of a viable alternative. Sorry

hi mary,
yes, i've gone through the hours of discussion but couldn't seem to find a straight answer - i got very confused as a result! i guess i'm not up with all the lingo and got myself into a total brain freeze!
thanks for your reply though, i think that was sort of what i'd figured out (my brain is on de-frost as we speak) but it's nice to see that someone who knows more about vit c than me can give me a straight answer - a thousand thank yous

I just double checked the one I use (henry tianus antioxidant youthful essence - 20% vit c), it doesn't have both glycerine or propylene glycol. I did use their antioxidant purifying serum - 10 vit c), it doesn't have both ingredients either. |
