Hi,

I need your advise again.

After reading various websites about acneic skin, I found something that i have never tried for my acne skin (I have tried almost everything available). It is "muslin cloth".

In fact, I don't use any facial wash cloth so far as I afraid rubbing my acneic skin with any kind of cloth is ABSOLUTELY a NO NO. I simply wash my face using my hands to splash water many times and pat dry my face with PAPER TOWEL (thinking that disposable = hygene)... Shock

Now, I found that it is actually recommended to use muslin cloth to assist the exfoliation.

May be I am wrong. I often think that something from a skincare brand name always work BETTER. So, considering whether I should get the Dermalogica Sponge Cloth. From the description at EDS, I am not sure exactly what material it is made of. Does it perform the same or better than a cotton flannel/muslin that is available at some baby products store?

The dermalogica one, as described, will be hardened when dried out. By that, it doesn't seem to be made of cotton, but very much like what I am using to wash dishes at home... Bad Grin

Any suggestions? Should I keep using my HANDS only? Should I get a muslin square or the sponge cloth?

Thank you.

Hi there, I have used both! I use the muslin cloth that comes with Liz Earle's Cleanse and Polish and it is indeed mildly exfoliating, without being at all rough on broken out areas. The major thing with either type of cloth is to make sure they are washed independantly every day ( so you do need more than one so you can have one in the wash and one in use each day) otherwise like facewashers (flannels) they can harbour germs which will be bad news on acne prone skin of course!
The Dermalogica one is definitely a much softer option ... the fibres of the muslin cloths are more exfoliating ( though the cloths do get softer with each wash and so are not like when they are brand new for long).
I think the Dermalogica one is a better option for times when your skin is tender, be it broken out or sunburnt etc ( heaven forbid!) as it will be softer on your skin.. it still is ( in my opinion) better than just using hands alone as it gets more of your cleanser and residue off that tends to cling without that physical help, even with repeated rinses.
You can see the difference in what is left on your toner pad if you use that too. Shock
Anyway! I highly recommend BOTH but for different days! Smile

Hi BigHead,

Now I'm the opposite to you. Whenever I see a "common" thing ... like muslin ... being sold by a "Brand Name" cosmetic firm ... I don't think that they are necessarily selling a superior product.

What I would do is go to my local fabric store and take a peek at the various qualities of muslin they have for sale. You can get a very thin muslin that has the texture of cheesecloth ... right up to the heavier muslin that is used for waxing.

I'd select whichever quality it was that I wanted ... purchase a quantity [a yard or so] ... take my pinking shears and cut it into the appropriate sized squares.

I'll bet you could "make" several muslin cloths of the same or better quality for the amount of money you might have to pay for a "name brand" one.

If the pinking shears still permit fraying ... I'd either get some "no fray" and treat the edges ... or sew around the edge to stop it.

As a fabric, muslin is one of the less expensive ones ... and it would certainly be worthwhile to check out the fabric stores before spending the money on purchasing a "brand name" one.

Just my two cents ...

Mary

There is a seller on ebay that sells a cloth made for breakout prone skin. It is called heavens cloth and I hear it's wonderful. I am waiting for mine to come in the mail. If you type in heavens cloth on an ebay search you will see it. I think there are different types, but in the description you will see the one for acne. If you click on it you will find out everything you need to know. It sounded great to me! Very Happy It doesn't dry out hard and you hardley have to wash it because of the antibacterial properties in the cloth. That is two of the many great qualities that got me to buy this product.

Hi Madeline

That does sound interesting ... although I couldn't get a good look at the cloth itself. It looks like it could have been made on a knitting machine ...

I'll be interested to hear how you like it. I'm not sure that I would personally trust any "antibacterial properties" though ... but that's just me! Laughing I am so paranoid about adding bacteria to my skin that I won't even wipe my face twice with the same wash cloth! Laughing Overkill I know ... but ... Embarassed

Do keep us posted on this new product!

Mary

thank you for all your inputs.

I am not a smart girl in picking up good deals. As I am not smart enough to distinguish what is good or bad, I simply follow the $ sign as a guideline to the product quality. ^_^

As recommended, I checked on the ebay web site for the heaven cloths. Are those cloths antiseptic?? It is very amazing. There are a number of different kinds of heaven cloths for sale. However, how come hey look all the same to me Question

I am very tempted to buy the dermalogica sponge cloth (since there is a free gift come with it at EDS) and the heaven cloth as well.

Madeline, can you keep us posted on your comments after trying the heaven cloth???

thanks.
