Well, since becoming addicted to skin care because of this forum (wish I had started sooner! ), I have decided that I have combination skin. I used to say that my t-zone was oily, but I'm not even sure anymore what the t-zone is. My oily areas are my nose, the area around my nose, chin, center of the forehead, and around my hair line. My "normal" areas are my cheeks and the outer sections of my forehead.
That being said, I've been researching the proper treatment of combination skin, and I'm getting all kinds of results, but one constant seems to be that I should exfoliate a few times a week. The problem is... what do they mean? Do they mean a scrub? Do they mean a textured sponge? Do they mean an exfoliating toner? What do they mean? I'm using a skin care line from a local spa that I seem to be getting good results with, but the product labeled as the "exfoliator" is an almond scrub that is giving me some trouble because the little granules get into my eyes, without fail. Further, I've heard that you shouldn't exfoliate with granules because it causes broken capillaries. What the heck should I be buying? |

You can use many different types of exfoliants. All the things you listed are exfoliators, just different kinds. Granular exfoliators are fine as long as they are of decent quality; the grains should be small and smooth as to not cause broken capillaries. Some other things you could try to add to your routine would be AHAs or enzymes. I LOVE the PSF Pumpkin Peel. Another one I want to try is Dermalogica Microfoliant. Some things are meant to be used everyday, others not... But, you can exfoliate a few times a week for sure. |

Hello LandB,
What Faith said are all correct. Usually, scrubs are maual exfoliants. Things like AHA and enzymes are chemical exfoliants. I wouldn't use manual scrub for more than once a week. The only "Gentle" exfoliants I can use everyday are Dr. H CC and Jurlinque's face wash. What you described as your "combo" skin is exactly the same as my "combo" skin and I got great results from using the above two products. If you haven't tried them yet, you really should give it a try |

Let me guess, Wild Cat - sometimes you get a blackhead or two on your nose from our combination skin in periods of stress?
Thank you for the product recommendations - I've been eyeing those two from reading this forum but I hate to waste the mu-chu bucks I just spent on my spa line...
Hmm, let me think of a way to justify the expense! |

Hello LandB,
Yes, blackheads just pop on on my nose when when they feel like it But, ever since I started with those daily gentle exfoliant, my pores are a lot cleaner, and black heads don't hunt me anymore.
To justify the cost....as we all need to all the time...maybe you can try the homemade Dr. H CC. Carekate and others posted wonderful recepits of this product. Reviews are good too and its a lot cheaper. Worth a try if you don't mind DIY |

I bought Dermalogica's Microfoliant and loved the way my skin felt after using it. I was using it nightly for 3 days and it was too drying for me so now I'm reducing it to using it 2-3 times a week. I am happy with the purchase nonetheless. I still need to find a good moisturizer with antiaging properties. |

I have a tendency to develop broken caps so I have to be really careful with exfoliation. The Dermalogica Microfoliant can leave me dry, I cut down on use if my skin is protesting. Or, I don't massage it around my face, I just smooth it on and let it sit for a while before rinsing. This way I can get the benefit of the enzymatic action and avoid irritation. I find that I don't have to take any such precautions with the Dr H CC which is very gentle.
LandB, overly abrasive products can also cause micro tears in the skin. If you are set on using manual exfoliators, I suggest you look for products with small round grains which are gentler. |

And, for the love of God, never ever use anything like St. Ives Apricot Scrub on your face -- that stuff needs to come with a warning label! |

Amen! That stuff is rough as!
I think Microfoliant and Dr Hauschka Cleansing Cream are some of my face gentle choices - though some people have said that they found the Microfoliant drying. Also, there is PTR Botanical Buffing Beads - very gentle (some reckon too much so!) and feels like a massage for the face when you use it |

Hi Carekate and Mabsy IMHO St. Ives Apricot Scrub is more appropriate for scouring pots and pans Did more harm than good on me!
The Microfoliant was just right for me last summer, my skin gets more oily that part of the year and the drying effect was welcome. I will continue to use it in the colder and drier months, I'll just compensate by upping hydration after. |

Wow , I was just told to purchase St. Ives for sensitive skin because the regular kind was too harsh for me. Which is the reason why I haven't exfoliated in year(s)
How about Queen Helene? |
