i had exactly the same problem for years, and think its a build up of too many hormones and toxins which manifest in your skin
the acne completely disappeared from doing the following:
i came off the pill
i either cut out or cut right down on dairy products, sugar and processed food and alcohol
i started taking beta carotene (vit a)
firstly if your body is overloaded with hormones coming off the pill helps in the long run as its not natural and is putting extra synthetic hormones in your body which confuse and disrupt your own hormonal system
dairy products are full of hormones. sugar, alcohol and processed food all lead to increased testosterone which also leads to hormone related acne
from doing the above all my acne disappeared and this is after years of trying everything, antibiotics, retin a, different pills, laser treatment etc etc.
it is a hard regime to maintain and if i break it, as i have done the last few weeks as its coming up to christmas i break out and now have a nice patch of acne on my jawline again!
still it proves to me that this regime does work as if i deviate from any of it i do notice my skin starts to get worse again
hope that helps! |
I totally agree with the above post. Coming off the pill threw my hormones off and my previously clear skin erupted in big deep painful cysts along my jawline and my chin. This was 2 years ago. I have made adjustments to my diet and skincare, namely cutting out sugar, diary, alcohol and junk food...just mainly eating sensibly, and also incorporated Tazorac to my AHA/BHA routine, and I have been clear.
Good luck! |

Generally the reason for this is hormonal - but it could be as simple as wearing a scarf that has caused some irritation or has skin oils built up on it, or it could be your chin touching your neck if you sleep or lay down in a particular position with your head forward.
Do a "self-audit" over the course of a couple of days to make sure the solution isn't a simple one.
If it's hormonal, it's a bit trickier...lately i've been taking these supplements by FemMed that are called "Hormonal Balance" that have really stabilized my hormones throughout the month.
They are sold online or at shopper's drug mart in canada - the main ingredient is saw palmetto. |

it is most likely hormonal or could be stress related. Either way its important to change your pillowcase often (use only 100% cotton ones) and wipe down phones with an antibac wipe freqently. |

My acne problems have decreased significantly. However, I am still breaking out along my jawline. I don't get it! Everywhere else has been under control. But my jawline starting right next to my ear going down the jaw (but not the point of my chin) and also the underside of my jaw breaks out-- a mixture of mostly deep acne that doesn't really come to a head and the smaller ones that do come to a head so I can pop them.
(I know popping is bad but if I don't the zit will refuse to leave).
What is causing these breakouts? Is it because I sleep on my stomach/side so my face is on the pillow? Is it hormonal? Is it my make-up/SS/oil cleanser? Argh!
My routine:
AM: cleanse with Paula's Choice Balanced Cleanser, Kate Somerville Antioxidant, spot treat with Finacea, Shiseido spf 55, liquid foundation (currently trying different types)
PM: remove MU and SS with Albolene, wipe off excess oil/MU with Pond's cleansing wipes, Alternate between AHA 12% Glycolic souffle for 2 days, Paula's choice 2% BHA gel 1 day, MAMA lotion 1 day; then Finacea, Korres yogurt moisturizer (only when I am feeling dry)
My skin is combo. I used to have clear skin but started getting acne a couple years ago. In the past 3 months the acne has cleared mostly but I still have marks from healing scars. And the past two weeks I've had these breakouts on my jawline (which have always been a problem, then cleared, but now it's back).
I hope someone knows how I can prevent these breakouts... thanks! |
I have not read this thread, but just to comment on getting acne on your jaw line, I read that people in their 30's get that and it is normal. |

I just started getting the same problem about two weeks ago. I've been drinking a lot of milk and eating a lot of dairy products. I had no idea it affected your hormone balance! Thanks for the information. |

if you use makeup everyday, it could come from the residue of your makeup because the jawline is so easy to be ignored when you try to take off makeup |

I also back the hormonal theory.
I was always lead to believe that acne on and around your chin was due to a hormonal imbalance and that acne around your jawline was due to stress. How the experts can be that specific about how to identify causes of acne, i don't quite know, but i've read/heard it from a few different sources.
I would also try to inside balancing tactic aswell. Look at your diet, look at your lifestyle. Could you maybe start one evening a week doing a relaxing hobby like swimming or go for a massage to wind down? Also not touching the area will help - although i'm forever touching, i can't help it! Similarly, lying on unclean pillows can't be good.
I've never been one to advise anti-biotics and mediciated routes as i don't believe they help the whole body, although I understand how some people can get so distraught over acne they'll try anything.
But, i would truly look at your whole lifestyle with a view to balancing yourself out in all aspects.
Oh, and i can also recommend tea-tree oil. it's the only thing that really had any sort of impact on my jawline acne |

I do think stress worsens acne (in an already prone person) but I don't think it causes it on the jawline, specifically. During the most stressful times of my life (law school/studying for bar) I would break out on my cheeks, but had a completely clear jawline. I NEVER broke out on my jawline until I was about 37/38. My dermo chalked it up to hormones, and I tend to agree. We are all different, but I would guess hormones are at play here. I have been using Buzz on Acne too for about 3 weeks and am starting to think it may be pretty good stuff! |

Skim, I don't know how old you are, but Fawnie is right. The jawline is one of those areas for adult acne. If you don't have a hormonal problem, do you pull the covers up around your face? Sometimes if you have a bedspread oils from your face get into the fabric and can give you problems. I can highly recommend the Triple Lavender Face Foam and Epidermx II by NaturDerm, does wonders for me and EDS carries them. |

i agree -- I notice that I get little bumps around my jawline and around my hairline, and near my ears and on my tragus' (that little triangular part in the center of your ear where it connects to your face). I really honestly believe that it's because I can't completely get the facewash off in those areas. Even when I used a wash cloth...for some reason it's just a little more stubborn of an area for me.
I know lots of people have given their reccomendations for acne on here, and despite the fact that it's probably hormonal for everyone (unless they just aren't washing their face or are doing too much and overstimulating the oil glands) I will give you my solutions.... It has taken me sooo long to finally fall into a skin care routine that works well for me, and as I creep into my later twenties, I don't know if it's because I've perfected the regimen or if it's because my hormones are less out-of-control. But anyway, this is what I use...
-first, I use a fine-grained exfoliant...gel based. I don't have a lot of money for expensive stuff, so I use St. Ives microdermabrasion. It's a new product, but I have always had success with using a grainy exfoliant. this, obviously, will get all the dead skin cells to move out of the way for the next step. I only exfoliate twice per day because I can - I have really oily skin and lots of dead skin that I ususally have to remove with tweezers so my makeup doesn't look terrible over it.
-second, I used a super-foamy rich lathering wash. I really like Alba's Pineapple Enzyme Cleanser. It smells great and it's not harsh, but with the dead skin out of the way I can get a little lathering action in the pores.
-if I feel like I'm getting a breakout, I use Clean & Clear Blackhead clearing wash. It's a 10% benzoyl peroxide cream wash (that really bleaches out towels, mind you!) but I really like how well it works when I use it at night. It replaces the need for a zit cream for spot treatments. I use it for about 1 minute and let it sink it a bit and then wash it off. I fell upon this product when I was in the hospital for six days and my mother brought me some random face wash she'd picked up at kmart for me so I wouldn't have horrible skin by the time I left. I don't know if it's because I wasn't wearing makeup the whole time i was in there, but when I left my skin was wayyyy more clear than when I got in there.
I use Dr. Hauschka's normalizing oil during the day or sometimes a light aha lotion before makeup.
When I wash all of this crap off of my face, I stick my whole head under the faucet to really make sure I've gotten it all off of my jawline... I HAVE noticed a difference from doing this. Yes, it's like taking another shower, but I think it's helped out alot.
Also, have you tried Benzaclin? I used it a lot before I got on the insurance that I'm on now (it's $90 for me now so I don't use it) but that stuff would have my face glowing in two weeks. I now use a topical ethromycin that looks like a bingo dotter marker, and it's helped. I figured that the topical antibiotic and a walgreens brand 10% benzoyl peroxide gel would be pretty much the same concept as Benzaclin, but more affordable. It has helped alot and saved me money.
I also steam twice a week with a post-face mask...the old standby Queen Helene Mint Julep. Oh, and I'm also just starting out on the Vitamin A- read on a post on here that it helps clear the acne up pretty quickly. Also really want to check out Buzz On Acne.
Hope this helps. |

Could very well be hormonal...
Just something that popped in my mind. Could it be from talking on your phone. Maybe you should try speaker or get some anti-bacterial wipes. Also it could very well be from your pillow. I have that issue. Annnd dollface maybe switch tooth pastes. Check your shampoo too. change your pillowcase every day, use a new towel when you wash your face, avoid dairy and sugar.
I'm the queen of hormonal acne and I seldom break out on my jaw... Makes me think it could be something else but who am I to say.
As far as if it is hormonal acne, you could try Spiro (an antibiotic) or go on Yasmin or Diane 35. They decrease the amount of sebum produced thus lowering your breakouts. They do make you dry however... oooh boy. An you might have an initial break out, mood swings etc. The worst for me is how tired I feel. When I miss the pill
i wake up the next day with energy, on it I wake up like a zombie and remain that way for two or so hours. It's really lame.
I remember that if I had a pimple there and I picked at it anoher one would pop up right beside it days later. So hands off baby hands off!
Good luck! |

Oh yah maybe I should go back on Evening Primrose Oil. I have a bottle from when I did the fat flush diet. Flax seed is another supplement that is GREAT! My hair was always soooo shiny when I took it. Thx for reminding me. |

Skim I have read that adult acne tends to be on the jawline. SusieQ makes a good point. I have had problems with acne in the past and facial scarring. I was able for the first time to get it under control with Epidermx II by NaturDerm (you can find it in EDS) and the results were so good I added the other products. The scars started to smooth quickly when I added the Chrysalyx which is a moisturizer that firms, antioxidant and detox. S. Noir, I love Vitex that is chasteberry and I used it for my ovary problems which plagued me and were probably behind the adult acne. |

Yup, I had horrible acne along my chin and jawline all the way up around my temples. My dermatologist took one look at me and said hormonal acne. She put me on spironolactone, which is usually given for congestive heart failure but also acts as an androgen hormone blocker. No kidding, not three weeks later my skin was completely clear. Since I went on it in December I've had one cystic pimple and one little whitehead. That's it. So there is stuff out there that works! |

In a book I have by Susan Ciminelli: a 7 Day plan for radiant skin she says that spots on the chin area are related to hormonal issues as you suspect. She recommends to limit the intake of red meat and eat an organic diet as much as possible.
I think that is good advice but not the whole story. I have a similer issue my skin is better than it used to be but I still get "hormonal" break outs and Have started working with a herbalist to balance my hormones naturally.
I am taking Agnus Castus (Vitex/Chasteberry) and like SylphideNoir I totally recommend it. I also have a tea that my herbalist made up and a tinture that I am taking although it is still early days yet.
I have been doing a lot of reading around the subject and I do think that diet does play a large part even in what appears to be hormonal acne. For example when you eat a high sugar snack and especially when you do this a lot (which I do) this causes insulin to be released into your blood stream and the high levels of sugar are removed from your blood causing you to experiance the opposite low blood sugar this leads to the release of adrenaline which triggers the liver to release Glycogen back into the blood stream to bring sugar levels back up again and of course in the time it takes your body to do this you may have already had another sugar fix anyway and so the whole cycle begins again.
Now all this is bad enough in itself but the release of adrenaline into the system actually blocks the progesterone receptors in the body so that even if we have the right levels of this hormone our body cannot utilise it and it can result in a hormonal imbalance which may then cause symptoms like acne. Also adrenaline is a stress hormone and the constant release of it into your system can also trigger acne and is just bad for your skin in general from an anti-aging point of view.
So I think if you do find yourself with acne or any hormonal symptoms then looking at your diet is a crucial element in getting it under control. I think the main thing is to eat a low GI / anti-inflammatory diet with lots of whole foods and to keep your sugar levels balanced. I myself found last year when I managed to give up refined sugar products my skin improved very much but of course I fell off the wagon and am now paying for it.
As for skincare I would say to avoid really harsh products if you can and take a more holistic approch it may take longer but it will be more than a quick fix and you will hopefully see the benefits in all aspects of your well being.
Anyway sorry that was a bit of a ramble but I hope some of it was helpful. |

Hi, I have to let you know you may have digestion problem from the perspective of Chinese medical way. Your blood may be more acidic. Usually, this kind of diagnose is correct. You need avoid any sweet for a long time and eat more alkaline foods, such as vegetables and some fruit. |
