Apply more sunscreen than you think you need, scientists warn

Sunscreen loses much of its effectiveness if applied below the recommended thickness

Quote:
Previous studies suggest that sunscreen is typically spread as thinly as 0.8mg/cm².

The new study showed that at this level of usage, a sunscreen with a high SPF of 50 would at best provide just 40% of expected protection.

Quote:
“Given that most people don’t use sunscreens as tested by manufacturers, it’s better for people to use a much higher SPF than they think is necessary.”

Part of the research involved exposing eight fair-skinned volunteers to a blast of UV radiation, simulating sunlight.

Target areas of their skin were treated with high SPF sunscreen of varying thickness, ranging from 0.75mg/cm² to 2mg/cm².

The recommended usage is 30ml/ 1 oz to cover the entire body and reapply every 2 hours.

I personally use the two finger rule.

What that means specifically is that you spread a line of sunscreen over two of your fingers and that measures out to be the appropriate amount for your entire face and neck region.

This is false, as it depends on the strength of the sunscreen as to the length of time. This is usually visible by the SPF displayed.

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. The number tells you how long the sun’s UVB rays would take to redden your skin if you apply the sunscreen exactly as directed compared with the amount of time without sunscreen. So, if you use an SPF 30 product properly, it would take you 30 times longer to burn than if you used no sunscreen.

Not to mention, nowadays some sunscreens are applicable for swimming etc so that is another important factor to consider when using sunscreen.
