Wow Ari, thanks for the helpful yet concise info! I'm just beginning to research DIY stuff and had been eyeing the sea kelp. Where did you guys learn all this? Is there a book/website that gives good(but concise!) info on what different naatural ingredients do for hair, skin, etc? It's pretty difficult trying to piece things together w/ a little bit here, a little bit there |

Hi, tjsmom
Sorry I just now saw your post. About 14 months ago I discovered Skin Actives Scientific (www.skinactives.com ) and started ordering their products. I began with the Sea Kelp and was sooooo thrilled with it that I became an absolute fiend for their products! The forum member base was such an amazing source of information that I began to explore info from all over the web. I have used every single one of their actives and continue to do so.
I'm really looking forward to our co-op efforts here if we can get them going. I adore SAS's Yeast Beta Glucan and want to try the Oat BG if I can get it and the Yeast BG at a better price than I've seen so far.
Basically, what I put together here is a combination of what SAS & Active Concepts have to say plus extensive research on various forums PLUSwww.wikipedia.org and other scientific abstracts. I DO have a lot of faith in personal experiences (for balance) but I do not take into consideration anything said by a company promoting a product if they do not have a members' forum for the good & the bad. So, it's sort of a "piece by piece" gathering of info.
Ari
edit: And, OF COURSE, since I haven't even scratched the surface of the info out there, I count on the members of this forum to steer me to new sources of information. |

Thanks Ari! Since you seem so knowledgeable, could I ask you a quick piece of advice?
My plan to start with is ordering the SKB (for hair and skin) and eye bright (for undereye lines) from SAS and the viper venom (so I don't have to pay $500 for Botox for crow's feet and 11s) and pearl powder (for skin) from GOW. The beta glucens sound amazing. What exactly is the difference between the oat and the beta? TIA |

Honestly? I don't know. I've only used the Yeast BG which is wonderful for modulating the immune response and calming the skin; i.e. skin allergies, rosacea, etc. It also smoothes the skin very nicely. I've heard and read raves about the Oat BG, especially the liquid form, which is supposed to work faster and better on those pesky lines, that I really want to try it.
So, as you can see, I'm not very knowledgeable at all! But, thanks.
Ari
p.s. I'm not pro-viper venom. But, that's a personal antipathy. If you do try it, would you let me know how you like it? |

Ari,
Thanks for getting back to me. I'll definitely let you know about the viper venom. I'm trying to decide between that and the Relax-a-line w/ Vialox.
One more quick ?: Do you find a difference between the SKB and the liquid (Jim's?) seaweed from GoW? GoW is a lot cheaper, so then I could justify using it everywhere |

I haven't tried Jim's seaweed. I have been so in love with the Sea Kelp Bioferment I've never wanted to change.
Maybe someone who has tried both can chime in.

I have tried and currently have both, they are very different in my opinion. Seakelp bioferment is mainly agar base I think while jim's liquid kelp is watery and very raw (smells kinda bad) and concentrated, teaming with nutrients, and can be applied as a serum as well as added to creams.
i am not as in love with seakelp bioferment for my face anymore since adding the wrong proportion gives me little lines on my face due to its gel texture. however, adding just a little seakelp bio into my creams does give it a nice slip.
i also think (i read this on the SI site from the wise poster beamingcherries), that the seakelp bioferment forms a film and inhibit the absorption of other actives into the skin. so adding actives using seakelp bioferment as a base doesn't appeal to me even though i know many here do.
i have made a cleanser with decyl glucoside and jim's liquid kelp with a few drops of lime essential oil to make a cleanser i really like (even though i probably should have added a thickener since it was too watery).
i think that if you're used to the seakelp bioferment, the liquid kelp might seem yucky at first-i know i thought that, but all in all, i believe the liquid kelp has more nutrients.

You're welcome doba! It's a great site and I have learned a lot.... I don't post very much over there (even less than I post here ) but I definitely go there almost daily to read up on things. And, I was lucky enough to get in on the liquid oat beta glucan co-op that Markey just recently did. I should receive my kg this week. It is suppose to be wonderful for your skin.

Hi tjsmom,
I have been using the liquid kelp for my face, added to my moisturizer and also concentrated and undiluted as a serum (it is kinda messy used this way, since bits of kelp are actually floating around). Dev from SI did post an awesome serum recipe on the Garden of Wisdom forum which uses the kelp as a main ingredient but not a base so you won't have the debris problem.
http://forums.delphiforums.com/gardenofwisdom/messages/?start=Start+Reading+%3E%3E :
| Quote: |
Easy Peasy
2 oz distilled water, a pinch of hyaluronic acid (approx. 1/8 tsp), 1/4 tsp mushroom beta glucans, 1/4 tsp Jim's sea kelp (just because), a pinch of preservative for safety. Mix well, but briefly. Voila.
Half of this went into a 1 oz. serum bottle to use straight. Feels really good, calmed down a bit of redness within minutes.
Half of this went into a 1 oz. dropper bottle to add further actives to later.
Next time I'll add more beta glucans - I was trying to be careful of the texture on this one.
|
I haven't tried it for my hair yet. I think a member over at SI said she added some of the liquid kelp to a spray and uses that on her hair. If you're planning to add it to shampoo or conditioner, i think that is a great idea. it is just too liquid by itself and a thickener would have to be added if you wanted to use it as a shampoo base. you might also want to add frangrance if that were the case, as it smells pretty raw.
I think the liquid kelp is very versatile and i also add it to my body moisturizer as well per maiea's recommendation. I feel like I am doing a little good for my skin. Also, don't forget to buy some essential oil (you might need it mask the smell, i am so glad i decided to buy some sweet orange and lime EO!).
and you're welcome of course
Kristen
Also, here are a couple links from the SI site about liquid kelp for more reading:

How do you deal with the smell of liquid kelp?
I have both liquid kelp from GOW and the SBK, and even though I have a reputation of not having the sharpest sense of smell, it was overwhelming.
TIA,
Lucy. |

Lucy,
I actually like the smell of the Seakelp bioferment so I don't add anything. But I have heard that you can add oils to it if you want, but i am not sure if EO would mix properly without an emulsifier, but you can try with a small amount to see if it will mix.
As for the liquid kelp, i add a couple drops of lime EO and it smells great.

Kristen, only a couple drops of lime EO are really able to mask kelp smell? How much kelp are you adding the drops to (and exactly how many drops?). As much as I love the ocean, I just hate that nasty, fishy smell and cannot imagine wearing it in my hair, on my face and body, etc.! |

I could not stand the smell - even after I diluted it with Rose Hydrosol, and used that to combine with Emu oil.
I had a feeling that I was sleeping in a swamp.
Kristen, I have the same question - did you just add a few drops of Lime Oil to 1oz of liquid kelp, and it masked the smell?
TIA,
Lucy. |

Mermaidgirl and Lucy--i know what you mean! i thought i was going to get sick from using the kelp straight a couple times.
From my memory, to make my cleanser i used 1 teaspoon of decyl glucoside (surfactant) to 2 tablespoons liquid kelp and then about 2 small drops of lime EO. Lucy, i don't think the hyrosol would mask the smell. the lime EO i use is quite strong, i hope my proportions were ok, but my skin seemed to like it a lot.
I hope that helps.

Ditto! I still have a tough time with the smell myself, which is why I just add it to shampoo, body lotion, conditioner, etc.
For some odd reason I cannot use the liquid kelp straight on my face, it feels "tingly" if I do, so I take a quarter-size dollop of HA serum and add in 2-3 drops of the kelp and it seems to be okay. Next time when the liquid beta glucans come, I'll try to actually make up a serum with the BG's, liquid kelp in a HA base. |
