I know this will sound gross but after I've used the steam room I use the cloth and I get that horrible balling effect makes you realise how poor the regular exfoliators are.

my hubby is japanese and showed me how to use them and that was it..been using one now for years...you can buy them here in japan from 1 dollar to about 5 dollars...the best time to use it is after a hot bath ..you can actually see all the dead skin balling up and rolling away....dont scrub back and forth but in the same direction (like patting a cat) holding the cloth firmly against your skin then begin that motion on your damp skin. I also get great results just towards the end of my shower so that my skin has softened. There are a few different types as natsumi says and I find only one particular type works best on damp skin (without soap)where you can actually see your dead skin roll off... . should be kind of smooth firm nylon not too hard or soft and not the 'lumpy' nylon. |

Have any of you used a 3M Buf Puf, the one with a green side and a white one? They might only be available in the US, but I was wondering if it was comparable to the Dermalogica Cloth. I use it before using self-tanner and that thing can rub your skin raw. |

I don't think we have those in the UK. |

I recall being directed to steer clear of Buf Pufs...too harsh. |

This cloth any good for preventing ingrown hair from shaving? |

I only use the cloth twice a week, because it does give a very thorough exfoliation. I think, for prevention of ingrowing hairs, you'd probably need to exfoliate every day - so probably with something a little gentler.
I have awful ingrowing hair problems on my legs. Although I seem to get less of them since using the Dermalogica Buffing Cloth, some still do appear. |

Sometimes it's a little funny when I talk about my cloth to someone whose never tried it. Maybe I'm explaining it strange! I get so excited talking about how good it feels when buffing and how clean and soft the skin feels...okay think I'm doing it again! I feel safe here b/c everyone knows what I'm talking about.
annachan-What do you mean about the 'lumpy' nylon? My husband has a cloth with a different weave from mine. He likes the way soap gets foamy from the cloth. I think his is more aerated if that makes any sense but the courseness feels about the same. |

I think that maybe we're becoming ever so slightly obsessive with our beloved cloths, roadbee! I'm sure people must think I'm quite mad. |

I don't think you sound obsessive at all! If these cloths really work this well, their praises need to be sung!
I'm having trouble understanding exactly which cloth to get and how to use it, though. Should they be used with body wash, or do they exfoliate better on simply damp skin? I also don't understand the difference between "lumpy" and smooth. We don't have any Asian markets here, so I'd be interested in buying one online, but I can't really gauge the texture from the pics. |

Ch79 - I've only ever used the Dermalogica Ultimate Buffing one, I'm afraid, so can't help you with Japanese washcloth advice. The Dermalogica has quite a rough texture and needs to be used on damp skin, preferably with body wash. I really don't think you'll regret buying one.
Mabsy - Oooh, you must post back with your thoughts as soon as you've used it! (Don't bother getting dried or anything, make sure you come immediately to your PC and let me know!!!! ) |

I got the Japanese cloth in that I ordered from the Amazon link. It was a lightly-woven, very long nylon cloth. But not sure how to use it, the directions were in Japanese! |

Oh I will! It arrived in the mail today. I could in theory use it here (there is a shower at work) but I think I can handle waiting till tonight Maybe... |

hey hey hey my fave topic these days
Ch79 - like majorb, i have the Dermalogia cloth and use soap or body wash with mine. i can't imagine using it the same way natsumi uses it b/c of the courseness but I certainly wouldn't mind trying the softer 'scrub towel'.
i only have one towel bar in the bathroom that is currently shared. i think my household needs an extra towel bar for exfoliating cloths! |

I picked one of these up at a Japanese grocery store today. Mine is 11" x 35" and made of 60% nylon and 40% polyester. The brand name is Salux Co., Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan) and the bag says "invention prize awarded in Japan." It's called a "beauty skin cloth."

Annie, the directions on mine are all in English -- no Japanese in sight! There are also cute, colorful cartoon drawings for each step
Here's what the directions for my SALUX cloth say:
Keep your body wet. Soap the wet SALUX cloth----watch the lather grow.
Keep SALUX away from the direct flow of water, otherwise soap suds on it will be washed away.
Ideal for cleaning the entire body.
Special texturizing stimulates skin and blood circulation.
After rubbing with SALUX, rinse thoroughly.
Fast drying---hygienic---durable
FYI, according to the bag, the company has patents for this in the US, UK, France, Canada, Italy, and Japan.
HTH! Have fun!
P.S. I just noticed that the cartoon drawings are of a blond girl with blue eyes! |

Thanks so much for the directions. I've been winging it and the cloth really seems to soften my skin. I think I will order some as gifts. |

Count me in! I don't have a Dermalogica one - just a "no name" Japanese version, but I just tried it out in the shower and my back feels great! With the particular cloth I have, I don't find that it is much different in effect to my exfoliating gloves. However, with the exfoliating gloves I can't reach my back. The cloth makes this super easy and is also faster with doing the backs of legs etc. For everything else I just scrunch it up and use it like I would one of those shower scrunchie things. Is that what everyone else does?
Thanks for the recommendations btw! Love this! |

roadbee - You think we should go into business selling these things?
montrealgal - I'll make a note of that one and might try it once my Dermalogica eventually gives up the ghost.
Mabsy - They are so easy to use, aren't they! I'm not sure whether yours must have the same exfoliating power as the Dermalogica, as mine goes way beyond any other scrubby thing I've ever used. But these really are fantastic for your back. My shoulder and arm have been really painful for the last few months and so this has made a huge difference when I want to scrub my back.
And yes, I do tend to scrunch mine up for most of the rest of my body. You can get some darn good scrubbing power going on there! |

So what you're telling me is that really I have to buy another one of these (i.e. the Dermalogica one)... I'm sure that will happen at some stage too |

That's what this site is all about - encouraging each other to spend all our money!
Seriously, though, if you do go for the Dermalogica when this one's worn out, I'd be very interested to hear your comparison. |

Well, I've ordered the Salux one. They're dirt cheap on ebay.
I hope it works. I have yet to really stick with an exfoliator since Bath and Body Works quit selling Mocha My Day Scrub (bastards!). If I can just use this in place of a wash cloth with my bodywash, I think I can stick with it. Of course, that's what I said about my scrubby gloves. But I don't think those exfoliated all that well, thus decreasing my motivation.
Here's hoping! |
