I suffer from excessive sebum production which clog up my pores, causing little bumps around my face, especially the cheek areas. They're not really visible, just bumpy to the touch and dont go away unless squeezed. When I have my extractions during a facial, they get squeezed and what comes is just like toothpaste out of a tube (gross huh?!). I started on a skin care craze about a year ago to treat this condition, hoping to find non-comodogenic products which will help keep my pores unclogged. It was also through this process I discovered the holy Vit C from EDS mmebers. I have been using it religiously since, and have tried several brands. Recently I forgot my Vit C serum while on holidays and went without it for 2 weeks. I was fresh from a facial hence pretty much clog-free and found that the clogs were less and slower to build without Vit C! Could it be Vit C clogging my pores? Could Vit C actually be BAD for me? Anyone else experience this too? Also comments on how to rid this sebum thing will be much appreciated. Im tired of having bumpy skin! And dark eye circles too... another perennial problem!

In my experience, Vitamin C unfortunately definitely clogged my pores. My skin isn't super oily, but I am very prone to clogged pores (ie those little bumps you're referring to) so I have to be very careful about what I put on my skin, especially serums/lotions. There have been other posts about Vit C causing those bumps for others too.
What helps me the most are using AHA/GA type products, and manual exfoliation with a skin brush. Sleeping on my back helps also but I'm not very good at it. Good luck, and be sure to let us know if you find a solution!

Yes used to use it as its great for skin but stopped as I ended up with pores clogged and even looked a little discoloured.

Hi mojocat,

Sorry to hear vit c is clogging your pores! I do not have that problem but I was thinking that it might be the vit c serum you are using…have you tired different ones? I love Vivier and am now using the 20% serum. Also, what helps keep my pores unclogged is doing an asprin mask once a week. I cannot remember who suggested the asprin mask but it listed on the DYI index.

I think it does depend on the Vit C you are using. I had been using the PSF 20% but I think it might have been a little too much for my skin (the consistency felt alittle more oily to me), whereas now I've been using the IS Clinical Super Serum and it's working great. It feels alot more watery to me in consistency than the PSF and I think it works better for my skin (combo). HTH

I've been having clogged pores since using Vit. C & wondered if that was causing it.

unfortunately i hv tried various brands. Started with Vivier 10%, then moved on to JB C&C, then CrX and now just started on Viver C+E. I went back to Vivier (albeit a different one from the first i tried) cos out of all, that brand worked best for me in terms of 'hydration'. JB really dried me out. And CrX was kinad in-between. Another sad story is while I am prone to clogs, I also hv a dehydrated surface, so have to be very careful with my products - i still havent found my ideal skin care products and routine. Having said that, AHA/GA could be too drying for me? I havent used any of these regularly as I fear it will be too harsh. Eg daily use of dermalogica daily exofoliant is too much for me, and even on the alternate day, i have to accompany it with a hydration mask. What AHA/GA hv u got in mind Olyn? Dd it work for u?
Well to be honest, Vit C did not work wonders for me, Im just hanging on in hope fo the future/long-term benefits that it will bring as my skin ages. I might drop it after this last bottle... Sad

Mojocat,
My skin seems to react well to Most of AHA/BHA/GA type products, but my regimen currently includes a mild exfoliant wash that contains SA, a toner that contains GA, and a lotion that contains a retinoid and SA. I also have good luck with acid based mild peels such as Juice Beauty Green Apple, or Neutrogena. I have had good luck in the past with Alpha Hydrox brand AHA lotions as well. I think my skin just needs some 'encouragement' for cell turnover to avoid the dreaded clogged pores...unfortunately while I did get awesome results with Vitamin C in terms of brightness/repair, even with the best routine I have been unable to re-incorporate the Vitamin C. Now I just try to find other similar methods of producing it's effect. Smile As far as manual exfoliation, I use some form of OCM daily and the Clarisonic skin brush daily. I have found that all of these things have been positive in my skincare routine.

In the winter my skin will be more on the dry side, so I will probably pare down the SA/GA use to just my lotion (I currently use Neutrogena Anti Wrinkle Anti Blemish). I don't know if AHA based products would be too drying for your skin, but you might try it in small doses in the form of a lotion based product at first. If you find that you can't use them, I do find that I get good/similar results from the skin brush and OCM, although these can be drying too. It really depends on how your skin reacts! Good luck!

So for someone just beginning on AHA/SA/GA, what will you recommend? What is the difference between the lot and what skins are they suitable for?

I have stopped using DIY Vitamin C Serum for more than a year and started using it in the past 4 months.

At first, I made it at a concentration of 5% and found it go well with my skin; however, when I made it at 10% and found it my pores got clogged and my skin was super flaky and dry.

I think I may drop it to 5% or use 10% every other day.
