Hi everyone,
I am new to this forum. I just recently got serious about skin care, have been using Retin A and now I want to get into DIY Vit C serum. I have done a bit of reading around this forum, have read some threads/posts and followed this specific thread for a bit. However, I got totally confused as there are too many versions of DIY Vit C serums. Kassy especially has like 5 different versions. Does it matter which recipe I would pick to make? What is the difference between each recipes (functional wise, besides just different ingredients in the recipe). I really want to start placing the order asap but have no idea which recipe to pick to follow. Please help me get started! Thank you very much. |
You may want to get your feet wet with the kit offered by lotioncrafters since you have not made your own yet. here is Kassy's take on it:

hi, thank you for your reply. The thing about the kit is that there are too many ingredients and the way I see it, many ingredients mean the whole formulating process will be more complicated. Plus, I like a simple formula with as few ingredients as possible, Vit C, water, vit E, emulsifier ... |

simple: 3/4th to 1 teaspoon ascorbic acid in 30 ml water, add few drops Germaben II, and use within 2 weeks! |

Do you have ultrafine C (LAA) from a DIY supplier or something else? |

the glycerine was too sticky, I mixed it for ages and it seemed OK, but now its chrystalised lot lol, its in a brown dropper bottle, I even stood it in some warm water......... thank you for taking the time out x |

It should be dissolved fully in water before adding the glycerin, and you can use almost hot water.
It won't dissolve in KY that is silicon, some tried it as an anhydrous serum. |

you wont need any emulsifier as you are not using any oils in your recipe.... and yes the reason for crystal may be that it's too saturated, just try adding more water to the serum you have and see... |

Hi everybody , I am new to this forum but I have a lot of experience with DIY-Emulsions. But anyway I am having difficulties with this serum Everthing works fine, exept that the tocopherol doesn't dissolve in ethanol as it should I didn't use vodka. It stays on top of the serum. There is no emulsifier in the recipe and I didn't use the SKB because I am not sure what it is for. Does it act as a thickaning agent and thereby bind the vitamin E? If I order the ultramarine SKB from SkinAktives will I get a blue serum ?
For a quick solution I used lecithin to emulsify the tocopherol.
I would be glad for getting help here.. |
Vit E won't dissolve in ethanol. The ethanol is really best to dissolve the ferulic. The SKB does thicken and bind. Without SKB, you should shake it well before using to mix vit E.
Not sure about the ultramarine, it should be fine. I've used other SKB from skinactives and it works well. |

Thank you ShastaGirl, tocopherol is soluable in Ethanol look here http://www.fao.org/ag/agn/jecfa-additives/specs/monograph4/additive-468-m4.pdf if you don't make a stupid mistake as I did
If you mix it into the water phase it sure does not dissolve and you need a geling agent as SKB which works similar to an emulsifier. So you can skip SKB if you first solve the ferulic acid in ethanol and then add the tocopherol.
But anyway, I cannot find any other SKB than the ultramarine at SkinAktives where it is the only ingredient |

Hi everyone! I'm new in this forum. I've been doing a lot of research on DIY Vitamin C serums but I haven't really found a solution to my problem. I hope you guys can help.
What is the best way to make a vitamin C serum that incorporates my moisturizer? I'm done with 5% and 10% (water/glycerin combo) so 15% would be good, preferably using only LAA, distilled water, and my moisturizer (it's the only one to work on my oily skin so I can't do without it).
I'm trying to keep the serum as simple as possible without having to use oils or glycerin. I'm from the Philippines so ordering the kit from Lotioncrafters is out. Thanks! |

you are better off layering your moisturizer on top of DIY vita C serum. LAA at 15% will liquify almost any cream... |

Hello there, it's my first time doing DIY and it's really hard to find l-ascorbic acid in powder/crystal form here in the Philippines. On the other hand the IV (intravenous) form of ascorbic acid
is easily available here and is super cheap.
It's my first time to post here so I can't post the link but it's basically 2cc's of ascorbic acid on a dark colored vial. I was wondering if I could use this instead of the powder/crystal form? Like just break a vial and mix it to make a vit. c serum?
How will I adjust the amount since each vial comes in 2 cc and I would just like to use glycerin, distilled water and some vitamin e with it?
One last question, is Vegetable glycerin the same as just regular glycerin? Thank you!!! |

Hey all,
I was wondering what skin routine you guys use before applying the serum. Does that matter at all or does the skin need to be wiped off before applying the serum? For example, can it be used in combination with the OCM (without any toner) or the honey wash method after the ACV toner?
Many thanks |

Once you wash and tone in the morning, how do you apply your vitamin C? And which brand do you use to make it yourself? Do you mix it in a moisturizer (base) or just buy and apply?
At night, you cleanse & tone and then, which first? RA or CP? Do you mix either one of those with moisturizers or do you buy a base? And do you need to let one sink in before you can apply the other or apply them consecutively?
One final question: once you get started on an "actives" routine like this, how long do you keep it up?
I have a BQ (LOVE IT!) and just bought a Dermal Tone after reading many rave reviews on this and other sites. Although I'm only 30, I'm trying to get rid of some sags after significant weight loss and am just hoping to make my skin look it's best (who isn't?).
Thanks, again, for all the great advice! |
My recipe for Vitamin C is:
1 tsp L-Ascorbic Acid powder (available from Skinactives, Bulkactives etc.)
3 tsp distilled water
1 tsp glycerin
1/4 tsp Vit E oil
Apply after toning in the am. Wait 30mins, if possible, before continuing with moisturiser and sunscreen.
At night I use a prescription strength Retin-A, wait one hour then apply CP and follow up with emu oil as a moisturiser. Retin-A should also be applied to dry skin. As for the use of actives - I think a long-term approach is needed to see any results. |
Does it matter which strength of Vit.E oil is used?
The highest i know 70,000 I.U
Or I'm I being overenthusiastic |

I just have FA with me and I do not want to make another order just for SKB and Poly 80?? Please please advice. |

Hi Kassy and all member! Greetings from new member but a long time EDS stalker
I have a question!
Is the FE only used to stabilize? as to allow the batch stays longer.
Or does it have other benefit (like antioxidant) to the skin??
I'm 21yo Asian. Have PIH issue. This week I cooperated DIY C serum using simple LAA+H20+MSM, then add a drop of tamanu oil, rub on my palm, apply on the skin, then top up with Emu oil to "push" the goodies into the skin further. I make this freshly everyday. So far the result is really good!
I wonder if my method is OK in terms of stabilizing the C to prevent it oxidizes as soon as it goes on the skin? I understand LAA oxidizes when in contact with h20, light and heat. |

This method of mixing it fresh each day is very good and effective. Applying it right away doesn't give it time to oxidize (much).
Ferulic acid does provide other benefits as an antioxidant, but isn't required.

Thank you for your reply. I read somewhere in EDS, LAA also can oxidize when on skin hence cause blackheads??
Also, I'm still in doubt between these method:
1. add LAA+h20, rub directly into skin, wait 5mins, MSM+h20+tamanu oil, rub into skin, then top up a layer of Emu oil
2. LAA+MSM+h20 together, rub with tamanu oil, wait 3mins, top up with Emu oil
Any suggestion??
PS:I make this freshly, daily, on every time I apply (meaning that I don't create a batch that lasts for few days) |
