I read a VERY informative article last night in this month's issue (free!) of MedEsthetics magazine regarding the latest challenges and developments in the formulation of Vitamin C & E serums....

Extremely interesting reading Barefootgirl. The article definitely covers all the issues that we've been discussing on anti-oxidants lately.
I'm now adding a preservative and penetration enhancer to all my DIY potions. But when I read about what goes on in a scientific lab compared to what I get up to in my kitchen, I do have some concerns about how effective my serums are! Still - I think we're all on the right track. |

The recipe only contains a very minimal amount of Vitamin E Oil and would not be enough to dissolve the CoQ10 IMHO. Another problem you would have is that CoQ10 is a bright yellow colour. If you add it to your C serum you will have no way of knowing if your serum has oxidized or not - yellow being the colour that indicates oxidization. |

Thanks, BF. I thought the ending of the article was especially interesting regarding an expiration date on products. I don't recall seeing that several antioxidant products I have purchased! |

| Ok I made the serum tonight, followed all the steps, yet mine looks a little grainly.. Like I can see the little white specs in the serum, Is this normal? I had to use a 1/2 tsp of vodka for the ferulic and so it kind of made my serum smell like vodka..hehe.. I'm assuming this is normal though. |

If you look back a few pages someone got ferulic acid which was full of hard lumps, there shouldn't be any white flakes in the serum, are you sure you mixed long enough! If there us vodka in a recipe you do smell vodka.

| Hmm.. Well the absorbic seemed to dissolve almost instantly in the water (I have the fine powdered kind from lotioncrafters) and I did stir it up anyway but it really just looked like crystal clear water. Once I combined everything the specs showed up.. My ferulic was a little bumpy but once I mixed it that went away - I don't care if it just *looks* this way - I'm just hoping it won't make it any less effective.. |

Bahh nevermind.. Me being the perfectionist that I am, I'm dumping it out and trying again. Plus I realized the recipe I used was somehow more than 1oz, I'm pretty sure Kassie's was 1oz? But mine was at least 1-2 tsps more and spilled over the rim when I went to fill my bottle - So I'm really really hoping someone can tell me what to do because I'm apparently incompetent =)
This is what I want:
1oz, 11-12% serum.
This is what I have:
Abscorbic acid
Ferulic + vodka to dilute (I also have witch hazel)
SKB
Vitamin e (capsules)
Distilled H20
Can someone simply tell me how much I would want of each to get a perfect 12%, 1oz? I have virtually no math skills to figure this out  |

| I just start out by using 3 tspns Distilled Water - mix all ingredients together, then add more Distilled Water to top up to 1oz/30ml. |

I was the one who had the ferulic with clumps. I contacted the company and they told me that was normal and to just grind it up. So, I did and it turned back into a powder but mine always has the flakes that cupcakez mentioned. I thought it was supposed to be that way. The flakes float to the top and I have to shake it up every time to get it to redistribute. I got mine from skinactives. They told me they were going to send me a replacement, but they never did. Cupcakez, where did you get your ferulic? Darkmoon, where do you get yours? Maybe I'll try your source next time.

Tonia,
I purchased my FA from skinactives and it's smooth as silk? I only add it to my regular moisturizer as I haven't made the C serum with it. I am test driving 2 vitamin C recipes that I just made up, I will post after I have actually used them for a while and see how they work out.
My only other suggestion is when there is an ingredient that needs alcohol to dissolve I use Everclear as it's a much higher proof than Vodka but you can consume it if you dare! I have seen it recommended for DIY in many books as well as sites.

My order was delayed But I posted a recipe on the anhydrous C thread that a friend emailed me and I am just trying it for the last couple of weeks. How are you liking it so far BF? I like the feel and it does leave my skin nice, but it's too soon for me to review fully yet!

I only use this post-deep rolling in a base oil concoction with other actives, so I cannot isolate it to know whether this one ingredient is making a difference, but I do know that the overall concoction seems to be working well...
I can add that it blends well and seems to last (no color changing or scent changes) in the refrigerator. Since it is an oil based formula, pH is not an issue - so no stinging or irritation there...

I am trying it in an oil based recipe without other actives added to see how it does on it's own so to speak, I will let everyone know after using it for a little while longer!

You can safely enjoy your oil based serum at room temperature, which will not only feel nicer, but in my experience absorbs quicker.
Bacteria can't grow in oil, and without H2O there isn't any oxidation worries! The worst that can happen to 'oils' is rancidity, and that takes a very long time. |
