I had my first Brazilian wax in Sydney, probably the least painful i've had thus far. The lady was very skilful yet gentle and helped with breathing (in just before and out with the stripping action). 1-yr into doing it, I pretty much can't live without a regular wax. But I've found that post-depilatory care is highly important to manage (i cant say prevent here cos i still get them!!) in-grown hair and hair re-growth. Sothy's post depilatory intense care (comes in a spray can) helps to slow hair re-growth while their in-house cream (similar to Bikini Saver) helps to treat in-grown hairs. With Sothys i can visibly see slower hair regrowth but the cream doesn't work wonders, esp for me who is particularly prone to in-growns and slack in my product application. However, that one occasion i religiously applied both products (Sothys in the morn n cream at night) for 2 weeks, i did notice good results. I managed to helped it "barer" for longer and also in the subsequent wax, the in-growns didnt leave nasty red bumps. I have heard Tendskin is realtively effective in in-grown treatment but have yet to try it myself cos i vaguely remember reading some negative feedback when i last did my research on it...need to look into it again. Otherwise I have been recommended laser treatment several times by my therapist. With laser, it appears you need to do it less often, the root of hair growth is addressed so that in the longer run, you have less growth to manage. I'm not sure if ultimately it permanently removes all the hairs. Personally, i would try it on my underarm first. But im not particularly hairy in the underarms so its also not my top priority as yet. Till then, still waxing for me!! |

I would love a professional bikini wax/hollywood! I think I would be far too embarassed though (even though us women are used to things like 'smear' tests etc from the gynacologists!)
How about aloe vera gel for soothing?
Debra, which oil do you use before your microwave wax? Could a layer of jojoba do the trick? Which way should the hairs be pulled towards your belly?!
Has anyone tried this 'natural' better than wax/sugaring stuff by Moom?

So what's the verdict ladies? Is there anything the will definately prevent ingrowns if you have skin that is prone to them?? I want to get a brazilian or at least a really tiny bikini wax done before I go on holidays (I get to have a second summer in the US so I have to be beach ready haha) but every time I get waxed I end up with awful ingrowns. I tried using a product called "in-grow go" last time. I still got them but I don't know if that was the products fault or mine, I didn't apply it every single day. Once they started looking better, I got lazy and they ended up coming back.
Also, any Brisbane girls know of a good place to get it done? |

I've heard that Brazilian Beauty in New Farm New Farm specifically, there is another in Taringa) is very good. They also had some $40 specials a few weeks back (if I remember correctly) but I'm not sure if they still do. I'm too chicken to try it anyway so I dind't pay too much attention
You should be able to prevent ingrowns if you are absolutely religious about exfoliating and treating the area with appropriate products (like Tend Skin or Follique of something like that). |

It's funny cause I never (or very rarely) get ingrowns down there but I do ALWAYS get them on my eyebrows no matter what I do or what method of hair removal I use.....must be different skin |

Hi Zoe...sorry for the delay in responding to your q. I use jojoba or sweet almond oil. And many kits come with oils included, but I usually run out of it before I'm done waxing! Hope this helps. |

I agree with BCGirl: EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE!! And then followup with a product like Tend Skin (or the homemade version). I'm seriously prone to ingrowns on my legs and bikini area, but since I discovered that exfoliating prior to any type of hair removal, I haven't had a single ingrown or razor bump. In fact, I would hazard to say that exfoliation is even more important then Tend Skin -- just 'cuz sometimes I forget or am too lazy to use it! |

also im wondering.....when is the best time to get a brazilian done? I think i heard that you should get it done right after your period because the area would be less sensitive. And the area is more sensitive right before your period. Is this true? |

i heard that the few days before or after your period is the most sensitive n hence would hurt the most. I usually get mine done at least 3 days after my period. |

Thanks Aukue, it can also be more than just exfoliating for some people. The difference between the strip wax and hard wax and technique really plays a major role for me as well! Glad u pointed that out at the beginning already! [/quote] |

The surgiwax I got suggested powdering the area instead of oil?
We can't get the brazilian kit here in the UK, only the leg and body microwave wax!

Just thought I'd let all the Brisbane girls know, I made a visit to Brazillian Beauty at Taringa a couple of weeks ago and will definately go back when I return from my holiday. The staff are friendly and make you feel super comfortable. This was my first all off totally Brazillian wax and I was in and out in 20 minutes (I couldnt believe how quick she was). They use a combination of strip wax and the thicker kind (dont know what it's technical term is). Strip was for the top part, and the thicker kind for everything else. I'd never seen a bikini wax done like that before but it seemed to work fine and the top part was done soooooooo quickly which made the whole experience less painful.
I exfoliated and then used a product called Legole to help with my tendency to get ingrowns. It seemed to help for a while but I still ended up with some ingrowns I know it's partially my own fault because I did slacken on the manual exfoliation, I've used the other product day and night since the day before I got waxed though. Hmmmm... maybe I'm just not supposed to mess with that area down there! Once the ingrowns have cleared up, I'm going to give it another go, this time exfoliating and applying the product day and night. If that doesnt work, then I give up!! |

I had my first full-on Brazilian wax in the late '90's at a salon in Manhattan called J Sisters. Loved the results and have been maintaining ever since!

I have been having full xxx (thats what complete nude around the vaginal, anus and bikini area is called here in Melbourne)waxing for about 3 years now. I used to get quite a few ingrowns too at first, but I find now I hardly get any, if at all for months now and I don't exfoliate any more than I did 3 years ago. Maybe it's a time factor, I can't say. It's just how it is now personally for me.
Someone posted earlier this year about having permanent hair removal via laser, I think it was. I just wanted to say that a few of my friends have had it done and a couple of them are now regretting it. They have horrible lumps and I mean biggg, that come up and some get infected all the time. Apparently this can happen with the permanent hair removal. So I am warning everyone thinking of having it done, please please seriously look at possible consequences. The professionals cannot guarantee that this condition will not happen to you. It is a permanent, horrible looking problem for my 2 friends. They have been to specialist after specialist to see if something can be done. But alas, that is one of the risks of the (laser) permanent hair removal. I don't know if the same risks are involved with other forms of permanent hair removal.
On a lighter note, my other friends that have had the procudure done are soo soo happy and of course recommend it to everyone! lol
Thanks for listening.

Did you try the powder or the oil? For my last DIY waxing, I applied some prescription numbing lotion (left over from facial laser resurfacing) about thirty minutes before, and it really helped! I'll have to check out the over the counter stuff when I use all this up. |

The product Tend Skin is in"tended" (wow that was smart of them!) LOL for ingrown hairs and I have used it for that on the external areas of the bikini area when having brazilian/sphinx or ? bikini waxes. Also find I get less ingrown hair with the hard wax that doesn't use strips of cotton/muslin. So for me, less ingrown with stripless type waxes. Some people do have a tendancy to ingrowns (myself included) but it's also important who is doing it, the angle they are pulling at etc. so as not to disrupt the follicle over time. |
okay, so there's a hard wax that doesn't use strips and a soft wax that does.
a girl i used to know made her own hard wax (this was the first i'd heard of stripless waxing) and i've looked for it ever since.
i've had it done professionally and i've done it myself, but only with the strips. i've tried looking for recipes for the hard wax, or even for places to buy it. nuthin'.
does anyone know where to find this mythical hard wax |

The Poetic Waxing kit is a strip-less hard wax, and I know there's also one from Nair that recently was introduced but so far it isn't available in the U.S.... |

Folks,
i never thought i'd get it done and in my case they removed everything.
The first time it hurt a lot and i was very sensitive but i bought Tend Skin and never had ingrown hair. I recommend a valium or a beer before going.
I didn't feel embarassed because those ladies at the salon do it all the time and it's no big deal to them.
I can't live without it these days--I feel so much cleaner but the downside it's expensive and you do it once a month--I do have to say though that each time it hurts less and the hair gets finer.
