Hey guys,

Was just wondering if anyone who sleeps on there back would be able to give me some tips? I want to do it so badly but am finding it hard.

What kind of pillow would you recommend? And do you put one underneath your legs and the small of your back as well?

It is so hard to learn to sleep on the back! I grew up sleeping on my side, and was in my fifties before I learned that it is better for one's face if you are on your back!

I bought a pillow labeled for back sleepers. It is fluffier than what I am comfortable on when I slept on my side. And, yes, I do find I need to put a pillow under my knees. Not under the small of my back, because once my knees are elevated, my back is flat against my mattress.

When I first decided to go "back" it took HOURS to fall asleep each night. And I would always wake up in the morning on my side with creases on my face! Over the years, it got much easier to fall asleep on my back. I do still sometimes wake up on my side, but much less often.

I wish I'd have known how creasy side sleeping makes a face when I was a young girl!

Thanks for your reply Kgeaux. It sounds like perseverance does pay off. I managed to sleep on my back for one night but although my legs were elevated I woke up with a pain in my lower back which was why I was wondering about putting something under the small of my back as well. But then went in to a shop specialising in good posture yesterday and they said the problem is probably more the mattress and suggested I change it... The things one does for beauty... Laughing

If you believe it to be hard – it will be hard, likewise if you believe it to be easy – it will be that too.

Like most things sleeping on our sides are often long term habits we have followed for some time, but even so there are things that can make the transition easier.

You know some people sleep on their backs with many pillows under their heads – and this isn’t such a great thing either. What I do often is (as you have done Moon) get to a specialist shop and ask them questions and test out their stuff. Whilst you may seem to pay higher prices, the money is very well spent if it improves the quality of your sleep – your life etc. Its easy to come into looking at something like sleeping on our backs simply for beauty – but you’d be amazed at how much the effects can ripple out into other arenas of your life – from things simply like improving the quality of your sleep to also improving the posture and organ functioning.

One thing I used to do was to ditch my pillows and use a rolled up towel to support simply my neck. I’ve had some clients who also have taken to using baby pillows under their head, and putting their other pillows under their knees for the same reason Kgeaux mentioning – flattening the back. Now the other thing that’s really worth doing when your learning to sleep on your back are some hypnosis tapes like relaxation or deep sleep because they will take you through your body and relax you (which helps you to fall off to sleep and stay in that positioning). After all the reason we toss and turn during the night is to get our bodies comfortable, but if your body is already comfortable in that position the need to toss and turn is removed.

I'm going to chime in on the pillow underneath my knees and small pillow under my head. I also have the head of my mattress elevated about 6 inches or so (by a wedge pillow underneath the memory foam mattress), and I think that helps tremendously with sleeping on my back, as well as reducing congestion from allergies, acid reflux, eyelid puffiness, etc. Also, if you have any underlying insomnia issues, be sure to treat those (sleep hygiene, tiny doses of melatonin, valerian tea, bright morning light, etc.), as they will help you sleep better overall.

At the beginning, it helps to take the pressure off by giving yourself permission to turn to your side if you try falling asleep on your back and can't after say 10 minutes. A few days of this worked like a charm for me. And I used to nap on my back, so maybe napping on vacation could be a good way to start the back-sleeping.

Thanks guys this is all really useful advice. Elevating the mattress at the head sounds like it could be helpful. Which wedge do you use for this Rockhugger?

I'm always looking for a newer, better way to do anything, so when I read SeanySean's post, I had to try the rolled up towel under my neck. It didn't work for me, because it was just too dense, too hard, and the back of my neck went numb. However, the SHAPE of the rolled up towel felt so comfortable! I went to Bed, Bath and Beyond and bought a neck roll pillow. Oh, my gosh! This is the most wonderful, comfortable solution! I have gone to sleep quickly, slept all night and woken up on my back every morning!!!

Try one of those crescent-shaped pillows used for traveling on planes - the arms help keep your head in place.

Also, put a pillow under your knees. This will alleviate back stress.

I also find it very helpful to sleep with a mouthguard, drugstore kind is fine. This will keep your mouth closed enough so that you don't snore or wake up with a dry mouth.

After sleeping this way for a while, I cannot get to sleep in my old on the side position. Wish I had known this since I was young.

I, too, am struggling learning to sleep on my back. I've nailed the pillow under the knees thing and that's working great for me. However, it's the pressure on the back of my head that prevents me from being fulling comfortable sleeping on my back. I've tried no pillow, my husband's neck roll, and the thin part of my pillow. Does anyone have suggestions for what particular head/neck pillows were effective for them, and any suggestions for exact positioning/angling of the head/neck for maximum comfort?

You can also get those cervical traction pillows that are flatter, and have an indent for your head. This helped me learn to sleep on my back.

Ha ha, but strangely enough, its not only when people are on their backs that the snore, people also snore on their sides. Sleeping on your back though means your not squashing your face into pillow and creating wrinkles. So I suppose its really down to that, do you want to snore and have no wrinkles or have wrinkles and no snore!
