I've been struggling with dark circles ever since I was 8. They really bring down my self esteem, especially when I have no concealer on. How do I get rid of them? (DO NOT SAY: drink water, get enough sleep, put cucumbers on your eyes, etc) Please suggest products that work well and effective home remedies. Thank you!

Hi,
Since you say you've always had them, you can treat them based on what they're stemming from:

1) if the colour itself is darker there, it could be just pigmentation, which is skin deep. This will get better with a Q switch laser (which can get rid of darker pigment and lighten skin.) A gently formulated hydroquinone treatment can also work, like ZO Skin's hydroquinone. Overall, retin-a, hydroquinone, vitamin C and some skin lighteners like kojic acid and arbutin MAY help also.

2)If it's stemming from hollows in the tear trough, then that's a contour issue, causing shadows. A facial fat transfer/ peri-orbital fat transfer can really work wonders (make sure you do everything supplement-wise to prevent bruising.) I did this myself, and mine are gone now - they're soo much better (I don't look like someone with noticeable dark circles anymore.) Others may suggest fillers, but I didn't want to go for that since it's temporary. I wanted a permanent fix.

That's my 2 cents. Hope this helps.

Hi skinharmony29! may I ask who did your fat transfer to the periorbital area? I am actually talking to a plastic surgeon right now about having this procedure done. I have had a tear trough deformity forever, and as I’m getting into my later 30s, it’s becoming even more noticeable. I look tired all the time and it’s extending out to the outer edges of my eyes. Anyways, I have read that it’s a very tricky area to have fat transfer because any bumps or irregularities are very noticeable. Could you speak a little more about your experience and if you noticed any of that? Thank you!

Hi Jenp7! Sure thing. I had mine done in San Diego by Dr. Amir Karam. I did a lot of research, and found he has the most extensive experience in this area (fat transfers), also he works exclusively on faces, and he has excellent technique. In my experience, he is a great, ethical and highly skilled doctor.

In terms of my healing, I am 2 and a half months post the fat transfer under my eyes, and it was so worth it!

I bruised, and was worried at first but it does slowly fade. The under eye hollows were completely gone immediately, but much of that is initial swelling. Then at around 2 weeks to a month, the under eye swelling decreased, but the under eyes were significantly better than before, without the extreme hollows I had. My under eyes are brighter, smoother, without dark circles and have a more youthful contour, I look less tired/ sick, and it's improving the fine little lines I had there too, as well as the skin texture.

However, be mentally prepared that fat transfer healing requires patience and trust, if you're like me and likely to freak out over every little (or big) change on your face, you may stress yourself out needlessly. For instance, I would carefully watch my face for any changes and freaked out at 1 month over what I thought were 'bags' (only noticeable to me). Turns out, they were only a normal part of the healing in the form of swelling as the fat keeps settling in...the area is completely smooth now, no bags at all, and really natural looking, but it's easy to get paranoid during the early phases of healing. I too read a lot of horror stories online, so was paranoid. But it worked out really well, and I think that's possible when someone has good technique and consistent results.

Hope that helps! Smile

Just by taking 6-8 hours of daily sleep you can get rid of your dark circles (in most cases).

Hi ksen287
Dark circles has been a major concern for many women nowadays. I have also suffered from dark circles for many years.I personally recommend natural remedies for dark circles because in some cases it has been seen that the appearance of dark circle got more darker after going through some laser treatment or using chemical containing cream. But to get rid of dark circles first you need to identify the cause of dark circles such as lack of sleep, lack of minerals in the body, stress or genetic and then treat it.Sweet almond oil is the most effective home remedies for dark circles it doesn't effect instant but after using for some time it surely provide effective result.

In my experience, sometimes dark circles are not really due to skin colour but due to skin being very thin and translucent so veins are visible.
If this is the case, I would recommend some massage to thicken the skin, take a look here:

I know some people don't respond well. My under eye skin thickened. First few times, the area became very puffy for up to an hour so I suggest you try it in the evening.

There are a lot of other threads on the subject, e.g. http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=53991.

Good luck!

I have used and liked the Gernetic Eye mask. It contains artichoke extract and really feels like it's draining the puffiness out when you put it on.

I will look up the ingredients and get back to you.

The only thing that has ever worked for my dark circles is the eye serum from PSF Skincare. It's available here on EDS & has rave reviews!
