hi all,
sorry this may be kinda long.... this is my first post after years of occassional lurking. i decided to try to make kassy's serum and it has ferulic acid which i never tried before and it seems to be pain in dissolving....
the thing is that i dont want any alcohol on my skin at all, my skin is way too dry right now. if i can avoid i def. will. so everyone seems to tell me that i need some kind of alcohol but i recently contacted lotioncrafters about this and this is what they responded when i asked them about how to get FA to dissolve rather than just disperse and also about dissolving it in alcohol:
"Dispersible is not the same a soluble, it will not be dissolved when you add it to hot water it will simply spread out in the water and form a milky solution.
The amount of ethanol or any of the other ingredients listed in the solubility section is quite small and your skin will likely not notice them. While we do not have the exact solubility ratios for you, you only need enough to dissolve the small amount of ferulic acid you’re using first, then add that to the water.
If you would prefer to not use a solvent you will need to raise the pH of the water to get it to dissolve."
so i googled it and supposedly i could just add baking soda to raise water's PH and get FA to actually dissolve? does anyone know anything about this? i dont want to waste product experimenting when its my first time making this concoction....? any suggestions plz? |

Fussing with the pH is going to be a challenge and might impact how well the L-aa works. C has to have just the right pH to be most effective.
When I was making my own C serum, I would just use the bare minimum amount of alcohol to dissolve the ferulic. An 1/8 teaspoon in an ounce of liquid is only about 2% alcohol. My skin is dry too and I found this small amount of alcohol was tolerable and had no detrimental effect.
I’ve heard you can also dissolve ferulic in witch hazel, but I’ve not tried it. |

Are you going to make LAA + Ferulic acid + Vitamin E serum? If so, you may follow the instruction & formulation of Lotioncrafter.

Ferulic acid is dissolved when triethanolamin is added to water.
Triethanolamin is used to increase the pH of the serum.
If you don't like triethanolamin, you may dissolve it in Propylene Glycol.

thanks...what kind of alcohol do u use? i was reading that isoprobyl alcohol is very drying so thats def. out....do u use ethanol? vodka? which one wont kill ur skin in ur experience? |

I used vodka. I didn’t notice any issue, it’s just a small amount in the ounce. Summer’s suggestion on propylene glycol is worth looking into as well. |
