I had mine done about two months ago. My eyes were closed and the lady put a rod over my eyelid, near to my eyelash. She put on glue and comb your lashes to adhere to the rod (to form the curl around the rod before she puts the perming lotion). She pulls my lashes to ensure that she got all on the rod. Uncomfortable but nothing unbearable. I teared abit when she puts on the perming lotion as it stings slightly but no bad reaction to the lotion.
I felt ok during the perming process, however, I was NOT ok with the result. Hope you don't mind me sharing my story here. I went to a Japanese lady with hopes that her years of experience would give a better result. The before and after pictures on look good as well. I even specifically told her to use a bigger rod (so that the curl will not be tight and un-natural).
Despite the communications, the perm came out too curly and it was poking into my eyelids, and was completely unnatural. Carekate had a bad eyelash perm experience as well and she advised me to use JM Lash Intervention and/or Ardell Lash and Brow thingy to condition my lashes. I have been using it for the last 6 weeks. Now picture this - some lashes still have the tight curl(towards my eyelids)and doesn't seemed to have grown at all, some have grown and was pointing downwards (compared to the permed ones) and suddenly has a sharp 90 degree curl (due to the perm). The brand new grown ones are pointing more straight compared to the permed ones. I can't use the eyelash curler now as it would mess up the already curl lashes. In summary, my lashes are in a mess right now.
Having said that, I am excited as I know that once I shed all the permed lashes, my new set of lashes will be natural and longer (thanks to JM/Ardell combo).
I have seen some online folks (not sure if from EDS) who liked their eyelash perm and swears by it. I guess, it really depends on the individual as well as the person who is doing the perm for you. I have learnt my lesson - I can hide bad hair perm under a hat, but can't hide bad eyelash perm.

Hey Goofygal, if u dont mind me asking, how much did u pay for the perm?
also, if the person is self employed and comes to your home to do it, do u still have to tip her, since she is the one the pockets all the money anyway?
any1 knows a good person for this in NYC? |

I had it done a few times with good results. I moved to a new city and tried a different person and had similar experience as goofygal. Imagine the lashes that curled up so high that they touched the eyelid and curled back (like curly fries )
Besides unsatisfactory results, I haven't really heard of people having a bad reaction to the perm solution. |

I had it done once...
I didn't have a reaction to the solution, but I didn't like the results I got. The curl I had was barely noticeable and wasn't worth the $35 bucks I paid for it. I suppose I could call and see if they have smaller rods they could use... I think the concept is great though. There just aren't enough people doing it in my area yet, I was only able to find the one salon that does it. |

Hi Jellytot,
I paid US$45 for the service and that's before tips. She has her own small establishment and I did tip her afterwards (I had to rush off to somewhere and didn't realize how bad the perm was till that night).
Tipping is always personal preference. If she did a good job for me, I always don't mind giving a good tip.
I am not sure about NYC but someone from the Purse Forum recommended a place in NYC and it's only US$28. Here's the URL: http://forum.purseblog.com/the-beauty-bar/eyelash-perming-has-anyone-done-it-22726.html
Hi Mtview,
Are you in the Bay Area? Wondering if we went to the same place |

I personally believe that those who have experienced positive results following a lash perm are the EXCEPTION rather than the norm! If you are lucky enough to find someone that really knows what they are doing, consider yourself blessed.
Here's a little food for thought: ANYBODY CAN BE TRAINED TO PERFORM EYELASH PERMS and then set themselves up in business. They offer weekend classes were you don't even have to be an aesthetician to sign up.
Hence the reason that most everyone ends up with kinky spider-leg/pubic hair looking lashes following a perm rather than the gorgeous, sweeping curved fan of lashes that we were all envisioning.
I mean, would you go to a salon and let someone cut/color/perm your hair if they had only taken a weekend class of 16 hours to become qualified to perform those services? It's like going in for a boob job and finding out your surgery was performed by a dentist (don't laugh -- it happens b/c any medical doctor can perform plastic surgery, regardless of his medical "speciality")!! |

Trust me, I would rather have had your barely noticeable result than the kinky, whacked out pubic hair-looking lashes that are a result of using too-small a rod!!! |

I've tried it once.
Loved it because it lasts quite long and was very convenient!
Just be sure to ask for bigger rods!!!!! The rods used on me were wayyyy toooo small, and my eyelashes were so curly, it bent backdowns and made a full circle. |

Once again, I reiterate if the person who is performing your procedure only had a total of 16-hours training before setting herself up in business to perform lash perms probably also only spent the least amount of money possible to purchase the lash perming “starter kit” which (probably) comes with one-size-fits-all perm rods! I’m completely serious that this is the likely scenario because I’ve actually SEEN those starter kits online when I was researching the safety of lash tinting and perming procedures a couple years ago....
I mean, unless you make the person SHOW you the different lash perm rod sizes available so you can pick which one to use, it’s highly unlikely the person is going to tell you that she only actually bought the extra-small size rods until it’s too late and she’s already completed the procedure! Because even if you looked in the mirror immediately upon completion of the perm and commented upon the too-tight curl, the chick will tell you, “Oh, don’t worry – the curl will relax a bit in a couple of hours/days and then it’ll be just right” (afterall, that is usually try of hair perms, right?!) and you won’t know any better until it’s too late....
Actually, I guess that WOULD be the way to ensure you don’t end up with too-tight results: demand that the person show you the various lash perm rod sizes available BEFORE you sit/lay in the chair and let her get started on you!
Geez, I guess it’s sorta like the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears: Papa Bear’s lash rod was too big and didn’t curl at all. Baby Bear’s lash rod was too small and curled too tightly. Mama Bear’s lash rod was just right....
I agree that it is a fantastic concept and if I could be lucky enough to find a truly skilled eyelash perm practioner, I’d probably be willing to give it another try. Unfortunately, the procedure is illegal in TX so when I got mine done, it was LITERALLY “off the books” and performed in the back room of an Ulta salon (Westlake store/Austin). If I had known then what I do now, there’s no way in hell I would’ve let that girl get anywhere near my eyelashes!
As GoofyGal said: there ain’t no way to had a bad eyelash perm. (BTW, I’m so glad that my Ardell/JM advice is working out for you!) |

Carekate,
JM/Ardell advice is the best piece of advice that I had listened to! Thanks a million!! While JM is expensive, it works! I need to give you a virtual hug!!! ~(^.^)~ |

Hi,
I went to a lady in cupertino. I found another salon in mountain view (a japanese owner) who does the eyelash perm. Wondering if I should give her a try
Can you tell me where you went so I can avoid it? |

LOL I went to a Japanese lady in Mountain View. Her place is along Hospital Drive. Is this the same one you found? |

| does anyone know if this will damage the lashes at all? cuz hair perming usually will damage the hair depending on how good the chemical lotion it is that they use. |

Yes, as you said, any chemical treatment alters hair's molecular structure. However, the damage may not be as severe or profound with lashes because of the relatively fast regrowth/turnover rate (i.e.: lashes grow, shed and re-grow much quicker than the hair on your head) -- especially if you use a lash growth serum to speed up the re-growth process! |
