I'm 25 and am thinking about using vitamin c serum since it helps with photoaging. What is the best vitamin c serum? Also, can i use vitamin c serum in conjunction with Retin A? When should i use vitamin c? During the day or at night?

Hey BCgirl,

A lot of people use Vitamin C during the day since it gives your sunscreen an added boost of protection. You could also use it at night if you want too. You can use Vitamin C with Retin A but like I stated previously many people use Vitamin c during the day and Retin A at night.

As for a good serum there is a great DIY Vitamin C thread.

http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=30503&start=0

There is a Vitamin C product that looks promising. This Vitamin C is in capsules which makes it supposed to stay stable. I may try these myself.

I hope this helps! Smile

The most popular vitamin C serum in this forum is Skinceuticals CE Ferulic. Recipes in the DIY forum. Buy on ebay in samples for fraction of retail price. Or try the knock-off stuff for cheap.

I have tried the ones in capsules and they go off too, after a month or 2 they turn color and get that gross odor! I think for the expense they just aren't worth it as I had to trash at least half of the package. They also don't go well under make up in my experience so can only be used at night. Just my experience with them. Smile

I like obagi c serum. I've tried skinceuticals c e ferulic and even making my own vit c serum but always end going back to obagi. It has three concentrations, 10%, 15% and 20% and is very reasonably priced for a 1oz bottle (at ebay or amazon).

Use vit c serum in the morning after cleansing and then Retin A at night (not at the same time).

Hope this helps.

How do you decide which concentration to go for? I'm considering having a go with this product, and am not sure which one to pick!

Thank you for sharing your experience. It sounds like the capsules aren't the way to go!

That product sounds good.
The body shop actually has some kind of capsules like this too.

Also,

I've been using a product like the 10% C capsules for over 5 years, made by Neostrata-it is made in the US.

no idea where you can get it as I am in Canada and buy it here...
I just use it at night 3x a week.

kinda hate how the adrienne one does not say the amount of capsules, the one I get has $30 and is around $30 on sale

I like Skinceuticals C + Ferulic.

Also Complex 31 Vit. C. (It is a company out of switzerland). I saw ads for it in newbeauty magazine, surprisingly they carried it at theshoppingchannel in Canada. I really like it, but it is no longer available at tsc.

Hopefully they ship internationally! Smile

I love the serums from Essentialwholesale.com! They have an outstanding Vitamin C serum you may be interested in.

http://www.essentialwholesale.com/product_p/454.htm

They sell to many spas & salons...you can read the reveiws noted on many of their products. They also use alot of organic ingredients and many are also certified vegan.

I LOVE their Chocolate Mint creme & use it as my body creme...heavenly! The foot lotion is also fantastic as is their DMAE&MSM, & Ultimate Serums.

My thought on this is start with 10% or 15% and see how your skin tolerates it, if yours is at all sensitive go for the 10% first as some people do have problems with the acidity of a C serum if sensitive. You can always move up if you do well with it. Smile

Really?
so the Adrienne ones started turning yellow?
I guess I'll know to stay away from the brand,
they sell it at a departement store here and on the shopping channel.

I have used the Neostrata vitamin C capsules a few years and that has never happened to me,

but the Neostrata capsules are annoying as their formula is a bit sticky and does not work with makeup,so i just use at night sometimes.

The body shop also has a similar product and I was lucky to be given 4 capsules of that product to try this week when I walked into the store.

Salesgirl was nice and told me body shop is changing all their items to be paraben free and the skin capsules were not on the shelf yet,but she offered me a sample Smile

maybe she thought I was the "mystery shopper" as I used to do a lot of mystery shopping and actually used to have to report about the body shop Laughing

Ottawa Shopper,

Yes they turned and were actually getting brownish yellow very fast and smelled horrid! Those don't work for under makeup either so it was night time only, way too greasy feeling. To be totally honest there isn't anything positive I can say about them! To be fair that was years ago that I tried one "kit" of hers off HSN at the time. Smile

I think Vivier is the best vitamin c serum with 20% concentration. However, it is pricey, cellular skin rx is another option with lower concentration 12% with affordable price.

Vitamin c products should be used at night. Otherwise if you use it during daytime your face will appear a lot of spots.

I use ASAP (an Australian brand). You can find their products on activeskin.com.au

It is amazing! It is the highest concentration of vitamin C for a very affordable price.

I'm 26 and have been using it on and off for 2 years but much more regularly for the last 9 months leading up to my wedding. People always comment on how luminous my skin is. I love vitamin C!!

I really liked Skinceuticals CEF, but I HATE the packaging. Has anyone figured away around th e instability issues? Also, does anybody know the maximum shelf life of this product? This way I can check the expiration date before I buy to ensure I'm getting a fresh batch. TIA Smile

Ok,
you've convinced me not to bother trying Adrienne's products.
The Neostrata vitamin C I've had some for quite a few months and it has never changed colors.
I know it still works for me as it stings a little on my skin and if it was de activated or bad nothing would happen.

I was just given a 15ml of MD skincare vitamin C serum and that looks good too, the pump is one of those fancy airless ones.

Guess I'll try that instead of buying something now.

I was also given 3 samples of Dermalogical multivitamin by a store I shop at and that seems good too.
Only reason I might not buy that one is Dermalogica never responded to my questions

and the site I bought from they tried to contact Dermalogica and they told me Dermalogica's response as to why they do not want to list the Vitamin C percent is that it is considered a trade secret (and more likely they do not want people copying their formula)

To me that is lame as how many other companies easily give out that info?

How have you got on with this one Shopper? I'm curious to try it, as it is stable packaging and I can get it at my local Boots.

Does anybody know the percentage of LAA? tia

Hmm good question! I doesn't say anything on the box but maybe you could email the asap customer service team.

I do know that I think it is amazing! It absorbs quickly, has 23% L-ascorbic acid with phenoglycol. It comes in an opaque glass bottle and topper. I use 2-3 drops of a night time before my moisturiser and it lasts for about 4-5 months. And what puts the cherry on the top is that it retails for $59AUD!

There is nothing I found online with the %.
And the bottleI have says nothing either.

The formula seems good as it does sting for a second like my other vitamin c product.

For me I would not rebuy this one just because it is almost $90 and the Neostrata vitamin C I use is very similar in texture and has the % and I usually pay at most $30 for that in Canada Smile

The MD skincare one does seem well packaged though, if I had more $ and did not like something else already maybe I'd get it.
I've been using the Neostrata vitamin C 10% several times a week for 5+ years already Smile
