I'd like to try making my own face powder. Do any of you make your own and do you have suggestions of what ingredients would be best to include? I want to add zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide to help with sun protection. Do you think it's necessary to add both or can I get away with only using zinc? I don't understand why sunscreens usually have both instead of one or the other, especially if the titanium is what causes the white cast on the skin.

Do you think using silk powder, rice powder AND pearl powder in a DIY concoction is overkill?

Skippie,
http://www.makingcosmetics.com sells a kit for making your own MMU the only thing you need besides the contents of the kit is a mortal&pestil. That is what I used for my first venture into DIY MMU the kit comes with very explicit instructions.
As far as your second post INMHO get your feet wet with a kit first then you can tweak it to suit you.

Have you ever made your own mascara, DarkMoon? After looking at that website, I think I want to try. I wear brown mascara and have the hardest time finding a brown I like. As soon as I find one, they stop making it. I'm currently on the hunt again. I don't like black-brown - it has to be a true brown.

I've checked out the recipes and thought about it, just haven't done it yet. I have a book I got from the same web site with recipes for all sorts of cosmetics, I think they have one for mascara, . I will get it out and post it or PM it to you asap if it has one.

Mascara recipe from book:
Recipes for Makeup Products
author: Karen Bombeli
published by: Somerset Cosmetics

Mascara with provitamin B5 for a well conditioned effect

Phase A
1 Tbsp. (15ml) Distilled Water
1 tsp. (5ml) Glycceryl Cocoate
10 drops Glycerin or Sorbitol

Phase B
1 1/2 tsp. (3.6g) Corn Starch
1/2 tsp. (1g) Talc Powder
1/2 tsp. (1g) Black Iorn Oxide Pigment
OR
1/2 tsp. (1g) Brown Iron Oxide Pigment

Phase C
1 tsp. (3.4g) White Bees Wax
1/2 tsp. (1g) Carnuba Wax
1/4 tsp. (0.6g) Gum Arabic
1/4 tsp. (1.3ml) Natural Jojoba

Phase D
5 drops Provitamin B5
2 drops Paraben-DU

Method (gives 1-2 mascara of 1/3 fl oz. or 10 ml each)

1. Combine the ingredients of Phase A in a heat resistant glass jar and stir well.

2. Add the ingredients of Phase B to Phase A, stir well, and heat this mixture to a maximum of 170 F (77C) by placing it in a hot water bath.

3. During that time combine the ingredients of Phase C in another heat resistant glass jar and heat it also up to 170 F (77C) to melt the mixture slowly.

4. Add now Phase C to Phase A/B mixture and stir until it becomes homogenous.

5. Finally, add Phase D and stir well.

Note to fill mixture into the mascara container, aspirate the still warm liquid into a medical syringe and inject the liquid carefully into container.

I hope this is OK to post as I noted the Author and Publisher, if not I am sorry. Let me know.

I hope this helps

Thanks, DarkMoon. I'll want to add some silk amino acids, too - I think that should go in Phase A. Do you agree?

You are most welcome Skippie! I have added both silk powder (pure) and just got Silk Amino Acid as well. I have added them to my pre-made mascara and just blended with the wand/brush. That said I think you could just add at the final stage, not sure it matters but I err on the side of caution so as not to kill of any goodies that don't like heat, silk is pretty strong though.

Just my thought

Rona

P.S. If the brown is too dark I don't think it would hurt to replace a small amount of the iron oxide with a tad of zinc oxide.

Well, I made my face powder this weekend and so far, I'm loving it. Here's what I mixed together:

2 tablespoons of Rice Powder
1 tablespoon of Pearl Powder
1 teaspoon of Zinc Oxide (micronized)
1 teaspoon of Silymarin
1 teaspoon of Hydrolyzed Oat Protein

The silymarin is yellow, so the powder was a light yellow color. However, when I put it on my face, it blends right in. I'm now ready to make a pressed powder version of it to put in my purse. I know that most binders have dimethicone in them, but I'm thinking I'll just try more of the hydrolyzed oat proteins. I've read good things about the UV protection of silymarin which is why I included it, but I don't know if I'll get the same results using it in powder form.

Well Miss Skippie,

You got the DIY bug! That sounds like a great recipe. I have never attempted a pressed MMU so let us know how it works out! Smile

This is exactly what I'm looking for!!! Smile
I'm having a hard time finding all from the same place?
Especially curious about the Hydrolyzed Oat Protein? Thank you

Here are 2 places that sell Hydrolozed Oat Protien:

http://www.fromnaturewithlove.com/soap/product.asp?product_id=oatprothydro

http://shop.texasnaturalsupply.ieasysite.com/productinfo.aspx?productid=OATPRO

Here is the recipe index thanks to Havana8! At the bottom are lists of suppliers for DIY goodies, also look at Alley's A+ list of suppliers.

Sometimes you end up having to order from more than one place!
